Dead engine

My engine went dead (2002 4.7l 4x4 Dakota), a read code P1389, after reading the forums I checked all relays at the box next to the battery and all are OK. I injected starting fluid at the throttel body and the engine started momentarily. I don't know if this has to do too but the speedometer went to 120mph, all other instruments are ok. I erased the code, attempted to start the engine again and code P1389 appears again.Any idea????

P1389 No ASD Relay Output Voltage At PCM No Z1 or Z2 voltage sensed when the auto shutdown relay is energized.
P1389 (M) No ASD Relay Output Voltage At PCM An open condition detected in the ASD relay output circuit.



IDK what that means but I thought I would post it up. Sorry I can't help more.

ASD relay, automatic shutdown. Shuts down the engine in extreme instances. Replace it and see what happens.Could be a 15 dollar fix

Just exchange the ASD relay with the fan relay and see if it fires up. If it does, then you know you have to get a new relay. If it don't, then you know you have other problems.

I can't identify the asd relay but I tested all with the fog lamp circuit and the are all ok. I found a pink square fuse blown 30amp, changed it and the engine started. At idle it seems ok, very smooth, but if you try to rev, it will begin to knock and do a very rough aceleration as if a couple cylinder were not working, let it idle again and will come smooth again. I erased all codes and got the same p1389 along with 352 353 and a couple more.....

0352 and 0353 should be injector malfuction codes IIRC. Could be clogged, I'd not think it's an electrical problem since it idles ok.

Also, check over your engine/chassis ground thoroughly, I wonder if something got shorted and blew that fuse which may have also broken a ground connection.

Reset the PCM as well, never hurts. Pull the connectors off the PCM for a couple min, then reinstall.

I'd check the power supply wire to the coils/injectors for a short. It is the green wire with a red stripe. That is the 12+ volt ASD circuit, it provides power to the coils and injectors. Sounds like something might be shorted out. If you cannot find a short, I'd test the resistance of each injector and coil. IIRC, the injectors are 12ohm and the primary coil winding is 2ohm.

Pull all your plugs and make sure they are not messes up which would be an indication of a bigger problem obviously. Change them if nescessary. Like they said run some good gas with cleaner like seafoam through it. See if it gets better.

how long have you let the engine set before getting it fixed to fire up. I know on my ranger I had. I let it set for a week and it had a heck of a rough idle and after running it up and down the road it finally blew out whatever built up in the engine.

ont believe that if the fuse sends the signal to the injectors cause he said tha the fuse was blown, and he also said that he injected starting fluid had stared momentarily.
One thing is for sure is that fuses just dont blow for no reason.
If it idles fine and it has hard time accellerating, also if it knocks or "cackles" upon throttle, then do a fuel psi test.
