replacing engine in an 04 durango.

im replacing the engine in my 04 durango (5.7). does anyone have any experience in doing this? we are stuck trying to get the inspection plate off the tranny. thought about pulling the engine and tranny together. do you have to pull the front axle to get the oil pan to clear? any tips would be appreciated. thanks

I haven't done it. You may be one of the first and the first I have heard of. Good luck and keep track of what you are doing. Perhaps you can post a "how-to". My best advise would be to buy a factory service manual. They are always worth the money. Also why are you replacing it? How many miles on it. Also a salvage yard could probably give some tips if they are not dicks.

Bought it with a blown engine. Hole in the block from a thrown rod. 155k miles. The engine I bought to replace it had spun 3 rod bearings and a cam bearing on it. Found that out when I opened the bottom end up to swap oil pans. Sounds like there are a lot of 04-05s in this condition.

I recently bought an 04' Durango, with the 5.7L blown in it. Bought a rebuilt engine from Michigan, had it shipped here to Columbus, Ohio and its in the shop now being finished up this week. Cant wait! Hope yours went well for you!!!
