This week was the website's 10th year anniversary (10th in existance, 9th for the domain).
About 11 years ago, one of my co-workers purchased a brand new 2000 Intense Blue Club Cab Dakota R/T. I didn't even know they existed up until that point, I was putzing around in a 1998 Toyota Corolla (needed an economy car because I drove a lot of miles for work, plus I had a young daughter). Something about the way the truck looked caught my eye, and everyone enjoyed taking a ride. Over the next couple of months my car was involved in two accidents (hit a deer in Colorado, then a co-worker rear ended me) - at that point I decided it was time to dump the car and get into something new. I searched around but Dakota R/T's were in short supply, almost had to pick one up from Phoenix until I discovered that a local dealership just got one of the early 2001 models in stock, so I snapped it up - 2001 Silver Club Cab R/T.
Just like most of you, I scoured the internet to try and learn more about this truck, but found information to be in short supply. If you searched for Dodge Truck parts on the web, almost everything that was displayed showed up for Dodge Rams, but not Dakotas/Durangos. I registered on all of the Dodge Truck forums that existed at the time, but found that the parts info was sporadic and people kept asking the same questions over and over (eg: where do I buy clear corners? Who makes a cold air intake for these trucks?, etc.).
As a result, I created a simple HTML page on my cable provider's shared hosting space that answered these repeated questions - showed basic pictures of some parts (eg: clear corners, tail lights, billet grilles, etc.) and links for where to buy them. That way when people asked the same questions over and over amongst the forums, I could just refer them to this common FAQ page. Over the next year the page got bigger, then split into multiple pages. On December 5, 2001 I decided things had progressed to the point that I wanted a proper URL for these pages, and www.dakota-durango.com
was born. A basic phpBB forum was added in early 2002, then this full version of vBulletin was installed in 2003.
Over the years this forum has hosted almost 20,000 registered users, over 100,000 unique unregistered guests, and almost 2.7 million posts.
I just wanted to post a big THANK YOU to the users of this site, and have decided to create a Dak-Dur anniversary contest
Who can Enter?
This contest is open to anyone who has been registered with the site for at least 3-6 months, and have at least 50-100 posts - just so the contest isn't stuffed with fake newbies. Entries will be accepted for the next 30 days, so the contest will end on or about 1/9/11.
Who will win?
Depending upon the number of entries I receive, I will select 3-5 names at random (will print out the names, toss them in a hat, and have my son draw them out like I used to do at the DRTC meets) and will send you a complete Dak-Dur merch pack for free - 1st generation t-shirt, 2nd generation t-shirt, Dak-Dur beer mug, Dak-Dur shot glass, plus a decal for your truck.
How to Enter:
Send me an e-mail at firstname.lastname@example.org
