Oil and Oil Filter Type?

Hi, I'm about to do an oil change on my 2000 Dodge Durango 4.7L. It's getting colder here in Indana and it's time to switch to 5w30. I usually use Quaker State(Defy) Motor Oil. The reason I use the Defy version is because it's desgined for higher mileage vehicles. My Durango just scrapped 212,000. :) The Quaker State Defy says it has higher Zinc levels to help fight engine wear. For the Oil filter I usually go with Wix or Bosch. I stay away from FRAM just because of all the negative reviews. Is there a better Oil and Filter I should be using, and is there anything I should take into consideration with my truck have over 200,000 miles? Never had any problems with what I'm using now just want to know if there is anything better? Thanks in advance for any help!!!:biggrin::biggrin::biggrin:

You said that you were going to switch to 5w30. 5w30 is the spec for the 4.7 year round. I use Mobil1 hi mileage 5w30 (@367K mi.), but if you haven't been using synthetic in the early miles, you may develop a slight oil leak from the cleaning effect.
My favorite filter is NAPA Gold 1085. It is made by Wix and has a drain-back flap just like the Mopar filter. The 1085 is slightly larger than the stock spec 4.7, but the mount surface is identical and holds more oil and filter media.

The only filter you can compare to Mobil1 is K&N - they are the same filter, the K&N just has the $5 nut welded on the end of the can.

K&N are good filters. No matter what oil you use never ever use anything but what the engine calls for. Which is 5w30. My father in law is a certified lubricants specialist and we spend a lot of time talking cars. the most important quality of any lubricant is that it is the proper viscosity for the application. Period. Synthetics are always better, but in reality if you change it every 3000, not much of a difference. I prefer Royal Purple HPS 5w30, but to each his own.

I don't mean to start any arguments over oil, we could be here all day. All I can say is he just changed his oil at 30,000 miles in his truck and had minimal wear metals and still had a reasonable amount of additive package left after an oil analysis was completed. I'm not saying you should go 30,000 miles on an oil change, but he did. It'd be interesting to see such lab results from a reputable resource.

Seems the link for the actual report is no longer displayed in OP, but if you go to last page, he posts his second oil analysis report which shows the initial report with the RP, and the new results after he switched to Amsoil(I don't promote amsoil either)

I've seen more than one report like this on the LX platform from people using RP compared to other oils with better looking reports.

For example, a 5W-30 motor oil performs like a SAE 5 motor oil would perform at the cold temperature specified, but still has the SAE 30 viscosity at 210° F (100° C) which is engine operating temperature. "

Is that from the link with the various oils tested API? I didn't see that. And the test machine doesn't have a heating element.

Rather than arguing about it, let's see anyone else provide real data that shows real results. The test at the link I provided shows the superior film strength and wear resistance which directly relates to the amount of wear taking place. Less wear = less wear metals in the oil. Which is exactly what we were discussing.

As long as the oil stays at room temp and is brand new fresh out of the bottle.

I posted a link showing real oil analysis of oil that was actually run in a car, and I have seen many others like that of RP. But then again, if you search long enough you will be able to find "real results" to support anything you want.

On another note out RP, I personally ran an engine that had 50K miles of nothing but 3000 mile oil changes using RP. When I went to put it in my truck, there was a purple film over everything inside the motor that the oil touched. Even the dipstick and thick enough that you couldn't see the markings on the dipstick anymore. If it's leaving a film like that inside the motor than how many clogged or obstructed oil passages were there? The first two 3000 mile oil changes after I put it in my truck using Mobil1 came out purple. After that, the oil drained brown like normal oil should. Not purple or black.
