Jeep guy looking for a Dakota!

Hi all,

Just joined up, mostly so I can see attachments, but also because I'm going to be in the market for a Dakota soon.

I bought a 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo 4.7L new and have driven it for the last 14 years. Last month, at 250k, it dropped a valve seat, so I bought a Junkyard Jasper with 12k miles for $2k and just finished the swap last weekend.

The old block looks good, so I'm sending it off to the machine shop, and if they don't find anything wrong with it, I'm going to rebuild it over the winter. Come spring time, I'm going to be looking for a Dakota to put it in.

I'm inevitably going to have some questions, but the first is which Dakota do I want that meets my criteria? Sport, slt, sxt, etc... there are so many different packages, it makes my head spin.
  • 4.7L
  • 545-RFE
  • 4x4
  • 4 doors
  • power seats & windows
  • remote entry

I'm thinking this is the SLT, but with so many packages/trim levels, I'm just not sure.

I know I need a clean and straight chassis, but I'm wondering how hard it is to source new body panels, beds, seats, and other cosmetic pieces.

Yes the Dakota comes with a variety of different trim packages. Don't worry about what package it is, just stick to looking for what you want.

I have an 2001 with the SLT package, it has everything you're looking for but the power seats. If possible, I'd look for one with the 3.92 gear set. I have the 3.55s and wish it was deeper, especially with the double overdrive of the 545rfe. But even then, it's not undrivable by any stretch of the imagination.

I think I might have found it... and I apologize in advance for asking a stupid question, as I already know the answer is "It's worth whatever someone will pay for it," but...

What's it worth?

'02 SLT Crew Cab(?) with 106k. Body is in reasonably good shape, bed is lined and in great shape (it was not a work truck), saw some minor surface rust on the rockers and frame. It was parked on the side of the road, so was unable to inspect the interior, which looked decent for 15 years (better than my WJ). I also couldn't look in the engine bay, but it looked very clean underneath.

Seller is asking $6k, but KBB puts it between $3300-3800. These things are HARD to find, but I'm really not sure I want to pay more than about $4k.

Thoughts?

Thanks!
