The shooter DID try to get out of his deployment. He DID hire a lawyer.

I have a what-if for those that call terrorism;

What if the shooter had been a Protestant named Jones? Would he still be considered a terrorist?

Instead of arguing amongst ourselves, we should wait and see what the powers-that-be decide. They have confiscated his computer and belongings, so we'll find out soon enough. And if they do label him a terrorist, fine and dandy. Lets get to work on that right away, in case there are more planned attacks.

Sadly enough, I'm betting he will be labeled a terrorist (at least by the media) solely on his name and religious beliefs. Spread the hate. The actual evidence will be interesting...

a secret plan or scheme to accomplish some purpose, esp. a hostile, unlawful, or evil purpose: a plot to overthrow the government.

to plan secretly, esp. something hostile or evil: to plot mutiny.

Just because he acted alone (or so we think) doesn't mean its not a terrorist plot. We know he planned it in advance but just how far in advance is not yet known.

Bingo. I'm not for immediately slighting people, based on their religious affiliations, but during times of crisis, profiling is necessary. Someone should have been watching this idiot closely. I'm reminded of the idiot Secret Service agent (of Middle Eastern decent) who modified his docs to board the wrong plane, with a concealed weapon, right after 9/11. They were right to have harrassed his ass. The measures taken against Japanese expats here in WWII were extreme, but necessary.
