ok...so i got the thermostat in....195 and it heats up nicely. i'm having a bit of a hesitation problem...when i step on the throttle, it chokes for a second or so and then takes off. i know i need a bigger throttlebody and i'm not sure what's best...55mm or 58mm, but i hope i'm not having any other problems...

help is appreciated!

The throttle body isn't causing the hesitation. It's timing and fuel that's causing it.

It still needs some fine tuning.

I doubt the hesitation is from too small of a throttle body. Have you tried setting your IAC counts since modifying the engie?

i had a feeling it wasn't the throttle body, though going to a bigger TB more appropriate for a 408 would be a smart idea. to my knowledge, there isn't any way to adjust the timing on these motors, right? it's either set or off. i am planning on getting a wideband A/F meter installed soon....which would be the best way to install and what else do i need? do i need special o2 sensors or the stock ones will work?

thanks again!

What are you using to tune with? A PCM flash or SCT?

The IAC won't cause a hesitation, though. It may idle a little shitty, but once the throttle plates open, it's out of the picture.

The timing is only adjustable within the PCM. Turning the distributor doesn't do anything but fuck with the fuel sync.

Speaking of that, make sure that the fuel sync is set pretty close to right. If it's way off the truck will run crappy too.

The wideband A/F gauge will usually come with an O2 sensor.

Make sure your TPS sensor is okay too. The voltage change as you move the throttle plates should be smooth without dead spots.

That can also cause a lean off idle condition if it's not set right or behaving as it should. Good call.

you guys read my mind....the TPS was my next "victim" to go after, as it's original (11 years old) and i know that if it's ever so slightly out of whack it's not going to trigger a MIL. i'll swap that out on monday just for piece of mind....

any recommendations on a good A/F wideband gauge setup?
