Troubleshooting lights

2000 Durango, newly acquired. I put in new engine and she said that she was having a turn signal problem in addition to the engine. Found a wire dangling as we started to unplug everything. Motor in, works great.. Now troubleshooting the lights.

Marker lights work, brake lights work, fog lights work, emergency flasher work. Head lights and turn signals do not.

Quick check of fuses good, haven't checked relays yet. Found a yellow wire near passenger front wheel disconnected/broken(not sure from where) that runs all the way to the back of the truck.

Any ideas where this wire might go? Power distribution? Or? Yellow, kind of thick, maybe 12 gauge...

Okay this yellow wire was added on for something, possibly trailer power. There are no wires that would be just 'bare' outside of loom, and AFAIK there is only one 'heavy' yellow wire in the entire harness, and that goes from the ignition switch to the starter relay.

You say brake lights work, what about the tails? Do you get any response from the turn signals at all? Do they work in the rear and/or the dash? Durangos have separate brake and turn circuits in the rear - the top ones are turn and the bottom ones are brake. Does the flasher click when you try the turn signals? The hazards and turn signals both run through the same flasher but two different fuses.

Headlights - does either beam on either side work? Do they come on when you hold the high beam switch? (the "flash to pass" function runs on a separate circuit).

Don't check fuses visually, you have to use a tester/meter because fuses that "look" fine can be bad. There are no relays in either of the circuits. The headlights have two separate fuses, and the ground runs through the switch.

Do you have a multimeter?

done!!! headlights not working, turn signals not working. pass to flash did work, emergency blinkers did work, brake lights worked. changed out multi function switch(corroded and found both circuits run through that part) head lights started working, but no turn signals, changed out flasher relay(in hidden spot covered many times) and BOOM!! turn signals!!

thanks for everyone posting this problems and their fixes. hopefully this helps someone else down the road.
