im no doctor, but from what ive been hearing its affecting immuno-compromised individuals, so young and old. The flu isnt killing anyone, its complications that come along with it such as pneumonia. all you parents have the right to be concerned, but dont let it get to you too much, just like other posters said, theres a lot of hype involved, and there will always be some disease out there ready to wipe out the planet. just my .02

I'm living in a fairly remote college town. Most of the local schools have actually shut down for several weeks due to high absense. The schools are small enough and the infection rate was high enough that one or two sick kids wound up infecting 25%+ of the student body and too many teachers to continue to hold school.
I work as a TA at the university teaching a lab. In the past 2 weeks, my 3 sections went from nearly perfect attendence to 2 or 3 missing in each section. The school has gone so far as to post a special web page you can enter your student I'd in that will automatically notify the dean of students and all of your professors and TA's that you are excused. |

And how many of those 10% out of school wouldn't normally be out of school except for the media hype over keeping your sick kids out of school?? I know when i was growing up, if you were sick, unless you were puking or had a high fever you stayed in school. A lot of schools now will make a kid go home because of a runny nose and cough because they are over paranoid about spreading H1N1. Over hyped by the media and causing panick in the general population.

Your mommy probably let you stay home with a 99. ![]() Like jplinville said, don't try telling anyone who has had it that is is just hype and it isn't too bad. I've seen and heard from the kids returning from missing 6-7 days of school with 105 fevers the whole time. They aren't buying the whole "hype".

I'm not saying people aren't getting sick. It just doesn't deserve the hype it's getting. It's just another form of the flu. Most people that get it will be just fine after it runs it's course. The only time you will hear about it on the news is on the few occasions when people die or have serious complications. But the same thing has happened every single previous flu season.

Main thing is, this strain is more contagious than the other strains. Sure the death rates are about the same, but more people will get H1N1 this year than the number that got a different strain of A or B during any previous given year.

Symptoms varied here but basically all of us started with a low-grade fever that never went above 101. Followed by a soar throat that ranged from mild to severe. That coupled with being congested and the coughing. Asthmatic daughter had all that plus some difficulty breathing but not so bad that she had to be hospitalized. I had some minor headaches but I think that was due mostly to the screwdrivers ![]() |

my 5 yr old daughter got diagnosed with swine flu tonight at the hospital...4 hrs earlier she was diagnosed with a bronchial infection, and a lil over an hr ago,, i noticed her passed out on the couch, and woke her up,and noticed she felt hot, went to go get her some motrin, and my wife checked her temp she was 104..so my wife grabbed her up and rushed her to the hospital,as i stay with he kids,im waiting on her too call me and let me know if their going to admit her or not, which im going too send my others over to her grandmothers and go up there, her doc earlier prescribed tamiflu, and after her first dose of it she threw it up..im scared shitless right now,not just over her but my other 3.

they finally let her go once they got her temp down to 101.9.and gave us a few meds to go along with what her fam doc gave us,not only does she have to h1n1 she has a bronchial infection or whatever it's called, her fever is staying right around 101,she slept through the night, and awoke hungry and thirsty so hopefully this is a good sign to come..

My whole family has been sick most of this week. I haven't gone to the doctor, and neiter has my daughter but both my son and wife have. Symptoms are coughing, running /stuffy nose. My son and daughter both had low grade fevers. When we took my son in after he threw up a couple times, they really didn't do much for him. Gave him some antibiotics and that was about it. Didn't even test for the H1N1. Doctors there said that it's about the only type of flu going around now so they aren't even testing for it anymore, unless you have more serious complications, which are also the only people getting the tamiflu.

hey keep your chin up buddy. I know its tough, I don't even know how I would deal if I was in you position. Just try and look on the positive side.
Ya this flu thing is scary... but unless you live a sheltered life in a bubble, it becomes just another part of life. (a part that sucks) Hope everything works out for you man.
