So far I have installed a K&N FIPK, Gibson cat back and superchips tuner. I remember telling myself I didn't need anything more after the tuner. Now I am thinking I need a new throttle body and new gears in the rear. I am looking at the F&B 2X48 (or 2X50) throttle body and 3.92 (or 4.10) gears. My question is which should be done first? Thanks for the input!

Gears will be a huge difference...and go 4.10's.

i assume your engine is a 6 banger, a 50mm tb is overkill until you've modded the intake manifold to the same bore size on your new tb.
so go for the new gears :biggthump

Gears, gears, gears...
Don't fear the gear. 4.10's are the best mod that i have done to my Mustang. It did have 2.73's so the 4.10's where likenight and day. IF you have 3.55's right now you will notice a diffreace with the 4.10's if you are goingto run a bigger tire then you might want to look at 4.30's or a gear like that. My truck came with 3.92's and i am fine with them. Gears are the best bang for the buck mad you can do, hands down.

Do the gears and pick up a TB off a 5.9. The TB should be around $80 that was the going price when I sold mine.

GEARS GEARS GEARS Just make sure you have a reputable shop install them, if not they can become a nightmare. Yes I know first hand

How much would these gears cost? and what is the effect on gas?

Expect to spend $500+ an axle for gears and installation.

shouldn't highway mileage suffer from a gear swap? or are you talking around town?

Highway milage will go down a bit, but city driving should go up as it will take less power/gas to get from light to light. Hopefully some time soon I will be able to afford some 4.10's.

Both. My Highway mileage went up as did my city mileage. My city mpg went from 12 to 14 and my highwy mpg went from 15/16 to 16/18. depending on how Im driveing.

ajjacobs,
Where did you find the K&N FIPK for the 3.9? I've looked and I can't find it. I love my drop filter. Wasn't expecting much, but went up a bridge I drive over all the time and managed to maintain 60 under 2000 rpm's the whole way up. Could have never done that with the shitty Fram paper filter I had. And info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

The FIPK for the 5.2 & 5.9 bolt right on. I always wondered why K&N does not market it for the 3.9?

do you think the fipk would fit on the first gen??
They make um for the Gen 2s that would probally fit better on your Gen 1 than for the gen 3. Personally if it was me I would just get one of open air cleaner types that sets on top of the tb like on the old muscle cars and pickups. I think it would go better w/ the looks of the Gen 1.

yea true but im not goin for looks in my truck, its covered in dirt or mud most of the time. i just want better throtle response and better performance. But are you saying the 3rd gen will fit better on a 1st or the 2nd gen will fit better on a 1st? thanks for the reply

My experience with both of these Mods and the 3.9 Magnum......
Naturally Aspirated Magnum V6 engines will respond to the 48MM TB, or a Ported V6 throttle Body that's been done right very well with a Good Cold Air Intake.........
A set of Gears will Really help too.....
3.9 with a 42 RH/RE 4spd Auto, go with a set of 4.56's
if you have a 5 spd Manual, a set 4.10's will work perfectly!

i say 4.10 gears first then the throttle body, but really i would just go with a v8 tb, just as good :banana2: if ya dont have a lsd or locker in the rear i would recommend gettin it done with the gears since you will have more chance to spin the tires with a lower gear

Questions:
How would 3.9's or 4.10 gears help gas milege?
Where can they be bought? (Links appreciated)
Should I look for a 4wd shop to install or a dealership mechanic?

4.10's should help with city driving a bit but have a negitive effect on the hwy (more so if you like to set the cruise controll at 85). If you have too much money and need to get rid of it quick have a dealer install them, if not find a reputable shop install them.

I take it you have 3.55 gears right now. Ihave 3.92's in my truck and there nice, but they are stock. I would go with 4.10's. The TB is not going to be that noticable, but the gears will be for sure.
On my 90 Mustang GT i went from 2.73's to 4.10's and WOW it was like a diffrent car. It felt like I added 100hp LOL. The 4.10's in that car sucked for the freeway since it was such a big jump, but you should be fine.

they dont make a cold air intake for the gen II's. You can very easily find a Gen III airhat thought, put that on your TB, and then the Gen III one will fit on.

I already have the throtle body (old thread). Still looking to get some 4.10's but money is tight. Soon, I hope.
