We are moving FORWARD "FULL THROTTLE" on the 4.7L!!! This is a HUGE deal for our us & customers... If you think about it... we have brought more performance parts to the 4.7L community in the last 12 months then ANYONE has in the last 10 years.
KEEP IT AND BUILD IT! The 4.7L is better engineered then the 4.6L... and those 4.6L's are making some great power. If they can make good POWER with a 4.6L then we can make more with a 4.7L!

I am definetly getting the 08 intake manifold, and I was going to get headers, what would be a better mod for me at this point, the headers or the pulley?

The underdrive ATI pulley would be about the same gain... but it would offer a few more benefits...

Ohh its going to happen... just those who wait will not get the $399.00 price.. Actually they have not given us a set price on them yet by our contact at ATI.. they did give us a window so we chose 399 that was within that window so we could get the GP started. We are looking at possibly getting them at a lower price... If that happens all who buy in now will get that lower price... we will just refund the difference. But as it sits at the moment its $399.00 until they tell us a solid cost.

I'm honestly contemplating this right now...... Man this is killing me. So even if we don't reach ten we will get this thing going. I will let you know by the end of the week. I will be paying by postal MO if I'm getting one so I will have to decide soon.
What kind of gains at the track do you expect to see with this? I want to make it to the 8's in the 1/8 and this is a hell of a lot easier to do than a torque converter which is also on the list. I don't expect the same gains but it will still be on the list.:mullet:

so is this saying that an underdrive pulley is not recommended? of they do not compromise anything else for the benefit of performance
AIR_RAM
06-24-2009, 06:01 PM
No, its saying that the ASP is a PULLEY with a lead weight added. The ATI is a HARMONIC DAMPER with the option of an underdrive pulley.
If your running a belt driven Supercharger then you may want to go with the standard pulley OD. But otherwise I suggest the 25% underdrive without a doubt.

This will take some stress off your crankshaft allowing it to Rev higher without flexing... and the underdrive is worth a bit all by itself... so it would be a nice addition to the total package.

And AirRam I have to admit after seeing what happened to BadAssR/t's motor because of the ASP UD pulley these things have me worried. Anything you can say to comfort me about this. I mean because the spacing was wrong on it or something it messed his engine up pretty bad. IDK what it was exactly, like a spacer missing or the bolt being to long and the pulley wobbling.

YES... The difference is:
This ATI Harmonic balancer is a performance DAMPER and just NOT a "PULLEY"
The ASP is a "PULLEY" bolted to a lead weight.
There is a HUGE difference and they are not even in the same category of performance mods.
The issue ASP had was that they did NOT take into consideration that the 4.7L has a step on the crankshaft snout... with our help they have identified and corrected the issue.
Since we are working with ATI to make these performance dampers rest assured we have already pointed that fact out and they have the drawings to show it is part of the design... so there will be NO fitting issues with the ATI damper.

It helps if you know what the Air Gun is calibrated to torque to. I normally like to put a torque wrench on everything but its difficult to use one on the crank bolt since there is nothing you can hold the to prevent the crank from turning. Just make sure you go back every now and than to make sure its seated all the way.

I'm kinda not liking that. Ummm..... can I put a flywheel wrench on the flywheel to hold it tight and then torque down the pulley bolt. I know they have a flywheel wrench at the house but they use it to turn the flywheel to get to the torque converter bolts. Do you think that will work?

06-28-2009, 08:56 AM
Yea that will work if you can get it in there, another possibly easier trick is to take a pry bar and wedge it into one of the starter drive teeth and pry against the bellhousing to keep the engine from turning when torquing the crank bolt.
Now what do I have to worry about with the ASP pulley on my truck?! The way it sounds, its a miracle my engine hasn't blown up yet. It sees 52-5500rpms several times a day, every day, and has not had an issue yet knock on wood. And it better not have an issue as there is no way in hell I can afford to fix the damn thing if it did. The ASP balancer may not be as good as a ATI, or other damper like them but they can't be any worse then a factory one.

Thanks for the info. My Gf's dad was telling me last night that he has just stuck a long screw driver or pry bar between the TC and the flywheel bolts and than let it turn over until you hit the bell housing and it is secure. I still would like to use one of those Flywheel wrenches (Actually found out it is called a Flywheel tun over tool) but theres is broke.

Right now we are waiting for the prototype to arrive... Im not sure where they are at with it but last we spoke to them (a week ago) they said it would take 3-4 weeks for the prototype to arrive. So by there time frame we are looking at about 2-3 weeks for the prototype and a few days testing...

If you honestly think you would make more then 550RWHP then go with the 7" but ATI recommends the 6" if your making under 550RWHP.
No matter what they are both going to do the job... but I'm sure there is a reason for it.
Lets move this to the ATI tread... I don't want to hijack my own Sullivan Intake tread.

Honestly right now or in the near future I do not see myself making anywhere near 550 rwhp but who the hell knows how crazy I will be when I'm out of school, older, and have a real job. Then again if I am sinking that much money into a motor I think I would be able to afford another pulley.:jester: I would think that the 7" pulley would be more stable becasue the weight it farther out in the pulley meaning it probably has to be made even closer to perfect then it would be at 6". Maybe I'm just grasping at straws here though, lol. I'm sure there is some crazy centripetal force equation going on here though.

Actually they are all tuned to a specific harmonic frequency so the 6" would actually be better suited for below 500HP. Im just going on what the manufacture tells me.

Well I tried to get it installed tonight but by the time I got home from my UTA and pulled the ASP pulley off it was really too dark to do much at all. I tried to stab it in but the tolerances are on the tight side and I could not get it started... I attempted to heat up the hub with my heat gun but that did not work either. My next trick is to freeze spray the snout and heat up the hub... I just need to get it started over the key... Right now I just cant get it started with limited light and time. ATI HARMONIC BALANCER INSTALLED!
Good news!!!!
Its in and running. It was a tight fit and a bit of a challenge. We do need to find a balancer install kit for the 4.7L engine because there is no way on Gods earth it will go on without a fight...
I ended up tracking down a nut a bolt distributor in Dallas where I was able to purchase a threaded Rod with the same thread/pitch as the balancer bolt... the highest grade they had was 5 and its not enough...
The first hurdle was getting it on started. its such a tight fit that I could not get it lined up with the key. So I boiled the balancer in water for 5 minutes and sprayed some FREEZE stuff on the crankshaft... I was able to get it far enough on to locate the key and then it just froze itself in place...
So I installed my threaded rod and began to press it into place. It started well and went on most of the way but then the nut froze up onto the rod and I had to use the balancer bolt to press it on the rest of the way.
I took it for a spin around the block and all feels normal. I cant say I can feel any gains.. but I know there will be less harmonics at high RPMs with the new ATI pulley installed.
We will be placing our order by the end of the week. I would like to get a few more days of testing and feedback for ATI first.

No wories... we purchased an install tool and will have it available to rent out for $15.00 a week + Shipping. The installer just MUST insure the hub is lined up (Started) over the key before pressing it on... this sounds like a no brainier but I just know there will be at least one or two customers who mess up that key... The installer should help out quite a bit once its started over the key.

OK guys... good news and some, well I would not call it bad news but its not great news.
Good NEWS FIRST!
The ATI damper is installed and I have been testing it for about a week.
I mentioned to them how it was difficult to catch the key and they said that they would loosen up the tolerance at the beginning of the hub to allow us to catch the wood ruff key before pressing it on.
They want/need me to send them the ATI damper that I have been testing back to them so they can disassemble and inspect it for any issues...> I doubt they will find any... but that's the FINAL step.
This just means some more time... I really had not expected it to draw out this long but it all makes perfect since. If I had to guess I would say we are looking at 2 more weeks... then we should have a final product.
I appologize for the delay... I never expected it to take this long. But rest assured that ATI is VERY thorough and when they start arriving you will be getting a product that has been TESTED and inspected for defects... before you get it.
Also, those who have already paid... and have been waiting since July 1st... You will be getting a small discount refund. I have not done the math yet your patients have earned everything I can give you.

The bad news is that the price is higher then what they originally told us. So this means we will lose money on the first round of orders... Awesome, I wonder if it will be home when I go home this weekend.:waiting: How are these things going to be to install? Are they gonna be a lot of trouble like you had or relatively easy. I mean did they change the keyway at all or anything?

There was a reason that I received the "PROTOTYPE" first... and a reason it took so long to get to this point... :)
So YES the issues I had have been addressed. So you should not have any major issues installing it as long as you have the correct tools to install it.
So far there have been no complainants about installation from any of the customers who have already installed them... I dont expect anyone to have any issues what so ever.

Im sorry it took so long... The R&D took much longer then they even suggested it would take. But rest assured you have the best balancer your money could have purchased.
Let me know when you get it installed.
