Ok, I got the stupid factory black plastic front bumper. My ? is, how do I paint it? DO I just smooth it out and paint it or would it be better to get a steel one and paint it.

I'm not a body man or an expert on this by any means but I think your going to need some kind of surface prep paint adhesive primer to help the paint stick to that plastic bumper. Otherwise the colored paint ain't gonna stick and will end up flaking off. For something like this I'd look into getting it done professionally because your front bumper is gonna take a lot of abuse from the wind, rocks, bug guts and pressure washings.

:sorry: Sorry I'm not a hellava lot of help on this Ryan, but that's just my two cents worth on it.

all ya need to help the paint is an adhesion promoter. they even sell the stuff at walmart.
prep the surface, spray the adhesion promoter, wait 5 mintues and paint.

Dakota sport bumpers come painted. I think they are the same material as the black "matt" finish ones. Use bulldog.

My Sport bumper is only partially painted. The upper section is a bumpy surface, flat finish. The lower section is painted.

I think he might be talking abou the SXT bumper cover. i have the SXT and have checked into getting the front bumper cover painted, but all the shops said that it is more work that it is worth and it still might not come out the best. you can try it, but you might want to have the cash saved to get a aftermarket cover.

Every shop that tells you it won't come out good. Yea, don't take it there. Plastic is definatly paintable. If they use adhesion promoter (Bulldog as mentioned above, or some competitive brand) and lots of flex agent, painted plastic can last a really really long time (like 10-20 years). It's a matter of prep work, you do really need to break ALL the texture off with sanding, make sure that ever surface has porous plastic, not hard texture. Even one little spot will give the paint somewhere to NOT stick and thusly it will start to peal, make sense?

In all honesty, if your paying a shop to do this right, it prolly would be cheaper to find a "All Makes" resto parts and get a paintable bumper, cost less and WAY less work!
