Has anyone been able to drop a HEMI into the 92 Dakota LE? Currently have 5.2 Liter (318 cu)...

I am considering a 5.7 Crate w/MPI for this vehicle. Any feedback would be appreciated...

Please point me to the proper thread or link if one exists...

Thanks!

i currently have a 92 Dakota w/ a 5.2 (318). the problem is, it has almost 215,000 miles on it!

we just recently bought an 06 Charger R/T w/ the 5.7 liter HEMI...this car is fast, and sweet!

so the idea of all of this was the make this little (actaully BIG) project into the "1992 Daytona-Dakota"...

i have made a few outside modifications, but nothing under the hood, and that's starting to bite me in the rear now...so far, i have done these things to make this 92 into a real looker:

1) A brand new 2-tone paint job (dark green and gold) looks gorgeous!!
2) a 3" body lift, and complimented w/ 32x11.5" steel radial mud kings, and pacer wheels...the bottom of the wheel wells had to be shaved a bit so that there was no rubbing anymore...(rubbed for a week or so...)
3) of course, the perfect compliment to a "pretty" truck, diamond-plated bed rails...
4) i took out the bed liner...it was pretty torn up and bowed upward...and had the bed re-painted dark green...
5) and last, but not least...STICKERS on the rear window...a must for any redneck truck...

so, the truck is immaculate (cosmetically...) there is no rust at all, a clean under-carriage...(only took mudding a few times...) everywhere i go, i get looks...and it the exhaust is fairly new and pretty loud, as were all the body styled Dakotas..BUT, the V8 power that was once there, has diminished to a large 4 cylinder's power (if that's at all possible) cruising is all this truck can do right now...and i want that Charger HEMI power under the hood of this clean ride...right now, it's all show and no go...it would be nice to say , "yea, it's got a HEMI!"

i'd like a recommendation--it would be much appreciated...because right now, im clueless on what should go down next.

thanks!

hey dalhand where did u find that 3' body lift i have been looking for one but can only find 2' lifts. If u do put a hemi in a gen II dakota man it would be sweet. if u do it let us know how it turns out.

Installing the best choice for power isn't everything to everyone. If you want a 5.7, go for it. These people can probably help you with just about any part of the install except mounting and exhaust.

Oh and I forgot to mention, There is a kit for motor mounts if you do an old school Hemi. I can't remember who makes it but since you have a gen II that would help.. considering you do the old school hemi.

Definately check out that website Street and Performance are the king when it comes to the new 5.7 hemi. I've spoken with them on several ocassions, as I was going to put the 5.7 into my 87 Dakota, which is pretty much the same as your 92, minus the 4x4 that you have. Everything will fit, you will have to do a few mods to the fuel system, and the drive by wire option. Also you will need to look into the tranny options. I was going to run a Viper T-56, which Street and Performance recomends. You can run an auto behind it, I just don't know too much about them. Hopefully this points you in the right direction. Good luck with the research, and keep us posted if you decide to go through with the install. Also don't let anyone dissway you from deciding to go ahead with it. My personally, I feel that a 390 build will outperform the 5.7, especially when you feed it a 200 shot from the bottle.

408 > 360 > Hemi

Then you have have the license plate "HEMIKLR" ;)

Obviously if you handicap the 5.7 you can beat it with just about anything. Now what if you leave the 360 totally stock and put the Magnum blower on the 5.7? Either compare them as stock engines or each at their full potential.

The HEMI will fit but it takes a lot of effort and money to make it work. The 5.7 crate injected runs 360 HP and costs around $7,700 then you can plan on adding another $5,000 just to make it fit and work.

The new 402 crate costs about $5,600 and comes in at 435 HP. You would need to throw in another $3,000 for the install and all of the goodies.

You can't see horsepower by opening up the hood but you can see a Hemi. With the 402 you would open the hood and it would look something like this.

With the 5.7 you open up the hood and it might look like this.

Looks do not win races, HP does.

Looks do not win races, HP does.

What percentage of all truck owners are in a race? If we were all in a race we would all be sporting at least BB 500ci hemis and not 402 tiny blocks.

Exactly, why mess with a tiny block 402 or 408 when you can have some REAL hp.

All joking aside, you can shoe horn a big block Hemi into a Dakota or the 5.7 Hemi. All it takes is time and money. Rad Rides installed a 528 Hemi into a 2002 Dakota and it was one bad ride.

E-mail them @ radrides@comcast.net and they should give you some of the details of the install.

my little 318 with 152,000 miles has never lost to a hemi. to me thats a performance down grade.

Tell me, what mods have you done to put out 350hp.

Almost any 318 RC can out run a fully loaded 3500 QC w/5.7 and lb./hp of better than 18.

Now how does that equate to a "performance down grade?"
