A 10000K HID Flashlight with a 12 ft. cord that plugs into your cigarette lighter. (Sorry for the crappy phone pics)

I've made four of these so far. I made the first for myself a year ago to go camping. Its in my truck now in case of emergency. I made the last three for my brother and co-worker today.

With the swivel handle and adjustable stand, its great for camping (setting up the tent in the dark), changing a flat tire, flashing into friends' houses to let them know you're outside, etc.
It sure beats setting up a tent in the dark while awkwardly holding a mag light, as I had to watch my friends do before I pulled this thing out and lit up the entire campsite.

A rechargeable 12v battery just won't fit into it well and can get heavy. I wanted something that was lightweight to be used near the car. With the right adapter, I can use it at home too if I needed something that bright.

When I use it, the truck is usually running, and it hasn't been an issue. I have not used it extensively when the truck is off (probably 15-20 min only) and there hasn't been any noticeable issues. It can't be as bad as having your headlights on while the truck is off since its only one bulb.

I used just our standard ballast for this, but any one would work. I didn't think to make a how-to when I made them but I may put one together since I have to make one more. What is tough is finding the right flashlight to use. I was only reminded of this project and had the opportunity to make more when a local store had the same flashlight I used back in stock again (in a different color). It used a 6V H3 bulb, so I was able to squeeze in a H3 HID bulb. Obviously, there also has to be enough room to house the ballast too..

:jester: Nice.

Thanks. It really has been very useful having it in the car/truck. Not just for emergencies. When I mentioned flashing my friend's house, that was a lot of fun. They definitely weren't expecting their house to get lit up like that.

You should sell some of them. Thats a good idea right there.

I wouldn't mind selling a few of these, for let's say $95 (ten bucks for my time and another $5 to ship it). But I'd have to hear from people pretty quickly if they want because as I mentioned, I've had difficulty finding the right flashlight and once this store sells out, I don't know when I would be able to find more.
