I just ordered up a Spintech Sport Truck SUV 3" SI/SO muffler (p/n 5441). I'm going to have the shop remove the first large resonator and the huge muffler but leave on the small resonator at the tail pipe. Hopefully it will sound good. Using the equation 302hp x 2.2cfm = 664cfm I hope this muffler flows that much.
I run dual Spintech Pro Streets with no cats on my '83 Chevy C10 w/350 and it sounds just down right mean. But for the Dakota I need it to be just a tad quieter.

Get rid of the resonators. They suck in my opinion.

Still waiting on the darned muffler. UPS says it should be here today. I've decided to pull out both resonators and go with a single 3" pipe and the muffler all the way back exiting at the stock location. I'm also going to have them take a look at the Y-pipe. I haven't made up my mind on that one yet.
After towing a 6'x12' Uhaul trailer this weekend this engine really needs to breath better. I'll go with the BFI intake once they make it for the '08+ Dakota's.

I've been told that the y-pipe is even smaller than stock. Like 1.5" or something like that. So you may do something there.

UPDATE:
Well, I got it done today. She is finished and, I'm not sure I like it. And funny thing is the exhaust guys warned me.
What I had done:
- Replaced y-pipe with custom made pipe. Dual 2.5" into single 3".
- New o2 bung put in new y-pipe in same exact spot.
- 3" pipe into Spintech Sport Truck SUV 3" SI/SO muffler mounted as far back towards the axle as possible.
- Tail pipe dumped in stock location.
Impressions:
- The work that was done was awesome. These guys knew what they were doing.
- Quiet at 700 RPM with just barely a hint of rumble. And that's ok.
- It drones heavily between 1700 - 2000 RPM. But below or above those RPM's and it's fine. My truck has the 3.55's and at 70 MPH it just happens to sit at 1900 RPM so it's bad.
- I did lose some low end torque but......it definitely has more power because I damn near lost it pulling out into heavy traffic due to the rear end breaking loose and I have limited-slip. It's never, ever been able to do that.
- On the way home (about 30 miles) I hit a few long hills where it would always down shift. But not this time with the new exhaust. It never came close to down shifting.
Unfortunately the muffler sits between the bed and the rear cab so the drone in the rear cab is pretty bad at those RPM's. I may end up going with a Borla they had there (dual in / single out). It was on another Dakota and it had a much deeper sound.
I'm going to live with this one for a while and let the engine get used to things and see how I feel then. But, there is no doubt there is more power.
Oh, and the y-pipe was really mushed. They said that Dodge must have changed things between the 06/07's and the 08's because the y-pipe was mashed even more.

Got the Borla put on today. Cut the drone by about 95%. And I like the sound a bit better than the Spintech.

Then sell the Spintech for cheap to me.

Could have just switched to a side or rear exit instead of being dumped and also gotten rid of the drone. But of course you have a 4.7. My 5.9 with the Magnaflow cat I just put on is damn near perfect IMO. Not that bad of a drone on the freeway, and it totally roars at WOT. The first time I came home after getting the cat put back into the exhasut, my wife didn't even hear me pull into the garage, where as before she could hear me coming before I even opened the garage door.

It is a rear exit. It ends behind the back tire instead of in front of it. I went with the stock exit location because I like that look. I even made sure the exhaust pipe was just long enough to exit beyond the body so that the sound/pressure waves wouldn't hit the body.
I had a '97 Dakota with 5.2L and 3" SI/2.5" DO Flowmaster 40 and had both pipes exit at the stock location behind each tire. It had no drone what so ever.
In my searching for "drone" I find that even the older Ram guys have problems with the drone. Hell, even the new Ram's have a problem with start up drone on a stock exhaust system.
i am interested in the spintech as well for my durango if you still have it

You may laugh, but put a cat back on it. I was surprised how much it changed the sound of my exhaust. I actually like it better now. It's a deeper rumble and less drone, and not quite as loud.
Of course you do have the new 4.7L, so not sure how that sounds with the Spintechs. Spintech might just not be the right muffler to use on the 4.7s. One of my old roommates had one on his '01 4.7, but of course it didn't sound the same as my R/T and he left the rest of his exhasut stock.

I'm working with Dakotanut right now regarding the Spintech.
I do love the sound of the Spintech's. They have a very aggressive sound. I'd put them in the "almost raspy" area of the sound spectrum but not "rappy". Magnaflow and Borla have a slightly deeper, bassy sound than the Spintech's but not as loud. I guess I'd define them as a little more muted. But the Spintech isn't as high pitched as say a "Corsa" exhaust not that the Corsa is the soprano of the exhaust world.
- For deep sound I'd go Cherry Bomb, Magnaflow, Aeroturbine or Borla.
- For a sound that isn't as deep or muted I'd go Spintech or a Twister. Maybe even a Flowmaster that is 1" bigger than your exhaust system.
- And for a slightly higher pitched sound I'd go Bassani or maybe Corsa.
I guess though, it comes down to pipe size and engine size as to how a particular exhaust is going to sound.
Unfortunately on this particular truck (Quad Cab), the Spintech with no resonator just has too much drone. I was even thinking of maybe going with a 2.25" dual exhaust with the mufflers mounted after the axle to get them as far away from the cab as possible. Even the Borla I have now is starting to drone heavily between 1500 - 2000 RPM but at least not at my highway cruising RPM's. It only happens when I accelerate.
