View Full Version : Anyone else have mushy brakes?

The brakes in this truck are very mushy. In the morning when I first start the truck my foot goes all the way to the floor and stops. If I pump the brakes a few times they get a bit more firm but I can still put the brake pedal all the way to the floor with a little effort.
I thought it might just be me but even my wife noticed it. The '04 Durango's brakes were nice and firm.
I've checked the fluid level and it's fine. I can't believe the brakes would need bleeding with only 600 miles on it.
How do the brakes feel on everyone's '08's or '09's?
Thanks!

That doesn't sound right. I'd be taking that thing back to the dealer to have them bled.

Thats not right. My truck stops like a geo metro hitting a brick wall(exaggeration). But it does stop fairly quick
Dude, You need to go to the dealer and get your shit checked out. Bad brakes, bad mileage, lack of power, there is def something wrong with your truck

Drive it like that for awhile, like a year, then get it checked, it might just need some breaking in...

^^LOL^^
Really, if my brakes were like that on a brand new truck, the first thing I would do is take it to the dealer and not keep driving it hoping someone on a message board will answer you. You have a warranty for a reason. use the damn thing.

Oh, don't get me wrong, it's stops very well. They just feel spongy/mushy. Much more so than the '04 Durango I traded in on the Dak.
Yeah, I'll take it to the dealer next Saturday and have them check it out.
I work from home so it won't get driven at all this coming work week.

Hwen you said the first pump it goes all the way to the floor, that right there is a sign of problems.

Well....my wife was very kind to take it into the dealer this morning.
They are replacing a brake caliper. That's all the info I have at this time and will know more this afternoon when we get it back. I checked the back sides of the wheels and didn't see any splatters or leaking so I'm not sure what this is about.
However, with all good things, there is a price to be paid. They gave my wife a Dodge Ram to drive around for the day. Apparently it stinks of "Stinky Man Sweat and BO". :D I'm going to pay for this, I just know it. :sorry:

Apparently the front caliper was leaking so they replaced it and bled the brakes. They also said the the Dakota's brakes should not be firm and that it's OK if they go all the way to the floor. They checked the booster and didn't find any wrong with it.
I'm just not used to driving a vehicle with brakes this mushy.
They gave us the Ram to drive and it's brake pedal was much more normal and what I'm used to. I think I'm going to go test drive another Dakota this weekend to see if it's the same.

1. Go back to the dealer
2. Find who told you that
3. Punch them in the face
4. Spit on them
5. Go to the service department
6. Demand they look at it again
7. Report the results to us

It's not normal for the brake pedal to go all the way to the floor, and if the dealer techs told you that, I'd be looking for a new dealer to take my vehicle to for warranty work.
Yup I agree with silver and blue

I know. I'm going to test drive one this weekend and find out once and for all what these brakes are supposed to feel like. The thing had 11 miles on it when we bought it. I can't see how it would have so many problems. It's either me or the truck and I need to know for sure.

One other thing I just remembered that I thought was weird is when I put on the emergency brake it damn near goes to the floor. In my Durango it would only go about half way and that was with 96,000 miles on it. Maybe the rear brakes need an adjustment?

Sounds like it, but a new truck shouldn't need to have thhe rear brakes adjusted.

Maybe the rear brakes are missing. It could happen. I watched my motor sergeant put brake pads on a HMMWV backwards....and he was "awesome.":P

Just an update but I tested another Dak's brakes and they were a little more firm but nothing major. These trucks just don't have the firm feeling that the Durango's brakes had. Oh well. It still stops just fine.

My brakes feel mushy too compared to most vehicles but I still have good stopping power. Only time I feel the pedal is coming close to the floor is when I took it throw 1.5ft of water.
