I have a 93 regular cab shortbox 2wd that i am hoping to swap a 5.7 hemi into. I am planning on using the XV Motorsports carb conversion kit. PHR tested the kit and got 371hp at 5800rpm on a completely stock motor, 438hp at 6700rpm with the comp 273 cam :mullet: . Anyhow i am just wondering about transmission options. I dont want to use the 545rfe because of the computer control, and partly because i dont trust its strength. Mine blew up in my 06 Ram last month with only 65000km on it. Granted i bought it used and do not know how it was driven/maintained before i got it. I would like to use a 518, because that is what is in the truck. I plan to get a built one(not sure on where from yet though). I am wondering if i can use the adapter kit from XV for the 727/904? Or are there any other options? Thanks guys, and sorry the long post.

If you want to use a manual trans, there are a few options that are direct bolt-ups.

Sharadon can build you a pretty stout 45RFE, but it isn't cheap.

My 45rfe has 138K on it and pulls great behind my Hemi. Of course, once the Hemi PCM went on it, it became a 5-45rfe. Most of the problems have been with the half step kickdown and burning the clutches during the kickdown. There are some tuning options out there to make the trans kick all the way down to second instead. Unfortunately for you, you would not be able to take advantage of the tuning options since you will be going Carb route, but the advise that HemiDak gave about the 45rfe is sound advise.

If their adapter for a 727/904 bolts to a Hemi, then it will bolt a 518 up, as long as its based on a small block bolt pattern.

HA! You said Gen II Hemi swap, and I'm thinking Gen II Hemi, not Gen II Dakota!

(Gen II Hemi's are the 426 big block hemi's from 64-71!:mullet:):jester:

Hahaha, i never even thought about gen II like that!!

Ive done a bunch more reading and researching about trans options, and i think ive convinced myself to just go T56 instead of an auto. There is a really good thread about T56 swaps over on bigblockdart.com.
