Hey AirRam, I wanted to know more about SCT. I might be getting one for a Christmas present for myself and just wanted to know more about it. If I buy the SCT from you do I get any custom tunes or do I have to purchase the tuning support from you also? Also for the tuning support do I need a wideband datalogger or would some dyno run printouts be sufficient? I know that the datalogger would probably be better but it costs almost $400 and 3 dyno pulls by me is $60 bucks so right now it is better for me to do the dynos. And one more thing, what exctly do you mean by taking the truck to the dealer to read the "Fuel Adaptives" what exactly is this and would it cost anything at the dealer.
After receiving your initial BASE tune its important that you do NOT go WOT right away. I recommend you drive under PART throttle for the first few days and take it to the dealership and have the "FUEL ADAPTIVE'S" read. Send this information to our tuner so he can tune the PART throttle first... after your part throttle is nailed down you can begin
Thanks,
Matt

Hey AirRam, I wanted to know more about SCT. I might be getting one for a Christmas present for myself and just wanted to know more about it. If I buy the SCT from you do I get any custom tunes or do I have to purchase the tuning support from you also?
When you purchase the SCT tuner from us it comes with "FREE TWEAKS" till tuned. So you will NOT need to pay for tuning UNLESS after your tuned you go off and change a major mod that requires our tuner to RE-TUNE... in that case he charges 150.00 to start all over.... Not a bad deal at all either way.
Also for the tuning support do I need a wideband datalogger or would some dyno run printouts be sufficient?
Our tuner will requier you to send him some type of Data logged files so he can tune your PCM and its HIGHLY RECOMMENDED you go that route, in all honestly it will be cheaper.
I know that the datalogger would probably be better but it costs almost $400 and 3 dyno pulls by me is $60 bucks so right now it is better for me to do the dynos.
It will take you more then 3 pulls on a DYNO to fine tune properly. It sounds cheaper but in the long run its MUCH MORE expensive to tune on a DYNO. After your initial cost of the DATA LOGGER your done! You will NEVER need to pay for a DYNO again. The Data Logger will turn EVERY street sign/light into a possible DYNO session at ANY TIME of the day/night... No appointments needed. After your engine is tuned completely the DATA LOGGER would have paid for itself... but after that its a tool that just keeps giving!
And one more thing, what exctly do you mean by taking the truck to the dealer to read the "Fuel Adaptives" what exactly is this and would it cost anything at the dealer.
Thanks,
Matt
Give me a call and I will explain the FUEL ADAPTIVES to you over the phone.. Its been a long day and I can explain them over the phone allot quicker then I can type.

its going to take more than just 3 dyno pulls to get it dialed in. i have had about 8 differnat tunes and havent even gotten to the a/f readings yet. so if you think about having to go to the dyno after every tune its really cheaper in the long run to get a wide band. you will have faster results since you wont have to drive to the dyno and spend item and money there. plus a wideband would be more accurate since its getting a a/f reading from inside the exhaust pipe and before the cats if you have then instead of after the cats and at the exhaust tip where outside air gives you a false reading.
I have never heard of having to bring your truck to the deal to get the Fuel Adaptives read. the only thing i can think he is talking about is the fuel curve, which you can get from a wideband and rpm converter.

The PCM uses the Fuel addaptive tables to adjust the AFR at different throttle positions.
If your PCM is PULLING fuel at part throttle you will see a NEGATIVE number... like -15... this means your PCM is pulling 15% fuel in that table. There are 20+ tables that the PCM uses to adjust the AFR.
At WOT your PCM looks to these tables. If your PCM is pulling -20 then it takes that and a few other sensor inputs like intake air temp an coolant temp... and then a math formula to determine the correct AFR for WOT.
What happend to me when I began tuning was the PCM was -25 or more... I was getting too much fuel according to the fuel additives... but at WOT the PCM would OVER compensate and cause a LEAN WOT condition... So we where tuning for a LEAN condition (ADDING FUEL) when the PCM was (REMOVING FUEL) So we had an INDUCED LEAN CONDITION. The only way to prevent this is to tune the fuel tables first and get them Zeroed out to +- single digits. At that point you can begin to tune... This will net you the best possible tune and prevent a losing battle with your PCM.
In order to fine tune your pcm you need to know what its doing. your fuel additives will tell you EXACTLY what its doing so you can make the right adjustments.
This is how they would look... I had the dealership plug up the scaner and then I just wrote down the graph and put it on an excel page...
http://www.fototime.com/248FC71FF190D95/standard.jpg
The above FUEL ADAPTIVE readings where playing havic with my tuning... We where adding more fuel when it clearly did NOT want more fuel... but at WOT it was 15.75:1... the PCM was taking too much fuel out in an attempt to fight the RICH condition... By doing so it created a super LEAN condition.
Remember 0 is PERFECT...
In a nut shell... learn from my experience.

Okay so I'm pretty sure I can get the SCT but the Wideband will have to wait a little so I can get the funds together:(. I see what you guys are saying about the wideband being cheaper and I guess your right it just sucks:jester:. I was hoping I could get away with a few dyno runs. Thanks for explaining the fuel adaptives table to me Nick I understand what you are saying now. I can't wait till Christmas because I know what I'm getting now.:woot:

its not that bad, i still dont have a wideband yet and so far the tunes have been very noticeable. I cant wait to see how much better they get after the wideband.

Oh okay cool so I can get a somewhat generic tune and run it until I get a wideband and really peg down the tune. I've got superchips now and I'm hoping this will make the superchips seem like child's play.
Another question, can I get tuning like with the superchips where I will have an 87 octane mode and a performance tune and a miscellaneous tune also? The main thing is I want to be able to run 87 octane and not Premium. I realize that i won't see the full potential of the tuning with 87 octane but at the moment I don't really want to be paying for premium all the time.

Hey Nick so can I get just a normal kinda universal tune when I get the SCT and then later get the wideband and get the tuning more nailed down or do I have to do it all at once.

you can get what ever ya want. my tune was run on 87 and had no problems. and yeah at first the SC felt better, but once the tuner gets the tunes tweaked enough the sct is WAY better.

Hey Nick,
This is Rick G over at Pro Zen Motorsports. I want the SCT tuner, but I had a quick question. My truck is a fastman 408, Magnum heads ported 2.02's Setup for Vortech blown, M-1, F&B 55 ...is this something we can tune...
I have the innovate Wideband LM-1 with datalogger.
Thanks

Rick, I have been waiting on a responce from our tuner who is in the middle of moving to another state due to a Job opportunity... so he is currently off the radar at this moment. Normally we could take care of you in a rather short period of time but until he gets moved in and settled down we dont have a tuner... Its a bummer for us. So I would have to recomend you to the only other person I would trust with a tune and that would be HEMIFEVER. If you need his contact info let me know.

So when is he going to be back around? I'm just getting everything else wrapped up and will be sending you out the money for cams tomorrow. I am still working on hooking up my wideband but it I will be datalogging soon enough. I'm looking at a month, maybe month and a half to be ordering this thing, do you think he will be back around by then. Please say yes. I feel like your tuner is gonna be the best tuner for me because I have a 4.7 and he has experience with this engine.

I dont expect him to be gone that long... The last I heard from him he sent an e-mail saying that he was moving to take advantage of a Job offer and that he would not be able to do any tunes until he got settled in.

AIR RAM,
If I buy the SCT handheld from you, do you upload a base tune to the handheld based on my mods to get the truck running? Id like to have a tune to load up to get it running safely to drive a couple hours to get on the dyno with a tuner.

Basically our tuner just sends you a tune to get started... It is NOT a performance tune and it is NOT recomended to even go WOT with the inital tune. Its just to get the engine running. You and our tuner will work at gatting the AFR to where it belongs at PART THOTTLE then WIDE OPEN THROTTLE. After the AFR is nailed down he will make small timing adjustments which you would need a means of measuring performance in order to fine tune them... I use both my G-Tech Pro Comp & my DynoJet WBC data logger on each run... this gives him everything he needs to make adjustments. He can see both Air Fuel Ratios & RPM's as well as performance results at the same time.
In a nut shell we and our tuner HIGHLY recomend you invest in a DATA LOGER. In the end it will cost less and a DATA LOGER is basically an on board DYNO... it literally turns every stop sign into a possible DYNO session any time of the day without the need for an appointment. They pay for themselfs in the end.
So he sends you the base tune that you would need to DATA LOG part throttle from a stop and at different RPMS.
You then E-mail our tuner those files and he will build you a tune based on those files.
He then sends you a NEW TUNE which you data log again to verify... then he will make changes if needed.
Once Part throttle is ditermined to be safe your next step would be to data log 75% throttle from a stop all the way through the gears...
Again E-mail that file to our tuner and he will adjust the program as needed.
After that is completed you will data log several WOT runs/passes and again e-mail those files to our tuner... He will make the needed changes to the program.
Its slow starting but it gets exciting and fun REAL QUICK with each new tune.
I hope this helps.

That does sound like fun. Looks like I'm gonna be going to the track a lot more in my truck.:D
Question though, will the tuner be able to tell if there is pinging in the engine from the wideband?
AIR_RAM
03-16-2009, 03:15 AM
No. he releys on your feedback as to the PINGING if any. He will get you to a safe timing advance but its up to you to inform him of any audiable pinging. Im sure he will push the timing up in the tunes untill it pings and then back it off a few degrees. Thats what he did for mine.

Okay that's what I figured. I didn't even know what pinging sounded like until the other week when I mixed fuels and ran it in performance mode. To me it sounded like there were little pebbles flinging around in my engine bay and hitting metal.

I might be interested in this, but I was just curious how much the total cost of a Data Logger, all of the tuning work that your guy does, and the SCT unit would be. Thanks.
