So here it goes, just about to move into a new house and it has a carport outside with three open walls to the elements, what i am asking is if I drape plastic over each side, setup a ventilation system, clean off the concrete and then wet it down would that be a good enough temp booth to paint my mirrors/rollpan/tailgate without it looking like crap, i have a good air compressor and am going to be buying a paint gun as well. I just dont have access to a paint booth, and could someone send me a link with very detailed instructions from base coat to clear coat and sanding methods and such, i know how its done and have done a little spraying, i just want everything to match so if someone has a link or could just send me a PM or something that would be cool.
Thanks all in advance!

It sounds like it could work. One thing that you should consider is one or several water seperators/ filters to get out dust and water.

That would work very well. Heck I painted my front and rear bumpers, bug deflector and push par in my garage with just a floor standing fan and spray cans. It came out just as good as the pros. I have steps and pics on my site if you would like to see.

as stated above, it would work well. The tricky part would be to get the ventilation system setup right. But for painting what you want to paint (i.e. not an entire vehicle) you'll be alright with a floor fan.

I basically did the same thing, and painted several VW Bugs, back in the day.
I sectioned off a portion of the garage with tarps, wrapped onto the floor about a foot extra. Opened up my attic access above it and placed furnace Filters there (for intake air). Then, luckily, the "man" door out the side of the garage was in my sectioned off area, I bought a cheap interior slab door from Lowe's, cut a hole in it and mounted a 20" box fan. This kept air flowing lightly and fairly clean.
My bugs always looked great and I painted the whole cars.
If you want any more detail description on what we did, send me a PM, AIM or Yahoo msg, or e-mail.

My truck is proof that you can achieve excellent results in a makeshift paint booth. My friends and i have a small garage and we have a paint booth that is made of plastic stapled to 2 by 4's. and a plastic top. My truck was painted in this shop/paint booth and it turned out very well. we just have box fans in two of the walls pulling the overspray out of the booth and we just hose down the floor prior to painting. If you prep the parts correctly you will get some really surprising results. http://www.cardomain.com/ride/757367

You may want to be careful. a neighbor could call the EPA and have your butt fried. Big time fines. the only reason I know this is because a buddy of mine did that in the front of his house and a neighbor waited till he was ready to paint and called that morning. 1/2 way though his paint job the EPA guy showed up with the cops. got him a nice 10 000 $ fine. And yes he had to pay it
Rob
why? why is painting against the law?

Yes not making aproper booth due to the chemicals is illegal without a proper ventilation system setup that is approved with your local regulators. I live in a smaller community so i may have to exnay on the idea

So all these millions of cans of paint that are sold each year are illegal to use unless you build an EPA approved paint booth? Or, is someone suggesting that the EPA thinks that it is ok to spray your car with 50 rattle cans but not one quart of automotive paint? Can you guess which one pollutes the air more?

Here's something that's often overlooked when sectioning off a garage. Make sure that the water heater pilot light (if applicable) is turned off. Paint fumes can "puddle" and could cause an unexpected boomer. Just my $.02

im just passing on the info I had. most people wont spray a car with a rattle can. Im not suggesting anything. Im jsut telling the guy that my buddy got popped for doing the same thing he was planning thats all.
if he wants to do it fine by me. I know there are places that will rent out paint booths on a hourly basis

Just keep the Garage closed till it's to late! Open it at the last minute to spray it. If a neighbor asks what the hell your doing, tell them your dog's got really bad fleas or something! I F*CKING HATE nosy people who ruin great things like painting parts at home! bastards!

All I can say is that my nephew has been doing it out of his garage for about 13 years and the only complaint is when there are too many cars in the driveway. Sounds like your buddy has a local thing going on there.

Getting back on topic, I painted my whole truck in the most makeshift of booths and it came out great.

I spent years building street rods with a buddy who's been doing it that way since the 70's. Never a problem yet.

I mounted a attic fan in the back of my garage and made a filter cage on the inside so the fan would pull the overspray through it. you can close off your garage and no one will be the wiser. As long as you can keep the overspray inside your good. but you have to have a good strong fan to pull it.
