View Full Version : I HATE inspection stations!!
Short story: failed inspection before for exhaust being too loud and too short, went back failed inspection for my new street legal exhaust and now tint too, got really pissed, yelled at bitch manager and left really pissed, really fast and now newfound hate for inspection stations!
I went to get my truck inspected for the first time since I've had it about 5 weeks ago and I failed because my exhaust was "Too loud and too short." So I got it fixed about 2 weeks ago, I had it changed from dumped Cherry bomb extremes before the rear axle to Flowmaster 40's dumped over the rear axle. Between classes, homework, and being somewhat lazy with my free time between those two I finally had a chance to get my truck reinspected today. I go there with my fixed exhaust, but it starts off bad to begin with. They ask me for my Insurance card, registration and license and I give it to them, blah blah blah. The lady then asks me to pop my hood and I insist on why that is and she says "We need to check your engine size." and I say "That does make sense!", as I walk away to the booth inside to wait for my truck she says something, but I don't hear her, but I don't care either. My truck goes through and they rev it and do all that dumb inspection crap that inspection station losers do best. This guy waiting in front of me says that they have been giving him a hard time for tint and this was his 3rd time through inspection for having tint on his windows. My truck is done and this guy and the bitch manager says that their are 2 problems, the guys says "You failed for tint and exhaust." I say "It passed for tint before and the exhaust should have passed since I got it fixed from before. I have flowmaster 40's now and the exhaust is dumped OVER the rear axle, there is no reason that 50 state street legal mufflers should fail!??" They failed me for new things, which I passed for before. I said "The tint isn't new, I bought the truck with it, you can't fail me for it now!" She says, "Well, you shouldn't have pass for the tint before and I'll take care of that." So now I'm just pissed. I have a few more small things to say about it, but I got the most important parts out. Enjoy my ranting story.

WOW...here our safety and emissions are two separate inspections, and safety can be had 'hot', you just gotta know how to talk to the right person, with your mouth and wallet. Emissions is computer, so not much ways around that.
Damn, you guys are lucky. Here in dumb south jersey they are anal about inspection stuff. I'll take the tint off since I don't really care about it at all and since it just came with the truck, but I'm not changing my street legal exhaust. Flowmaster 40's are supposed to be 50 state street legal, so how the hell can they even fail me for that and tell me its still too loud. Then they should stop revving my truck all the time, of course it'll be loud then. Idiots!

before I spent any money, I would have gone to another station. at least done a "drive by" and ask the dude behind the counter "my truck just failed for exhaust, can I get a 2nd opinion, do you think it'll pass?
if he says something like "sorry, if it failed there, it'll fail here too" then be on your way, if he says soemthing like "well, let's have a looksee"
then go ahead and pay him for the inspection!

Wow, sucks they can fail you on tint. Here in PA we cant fail you for tint, but everything else we can. Rules here are must have muffler to quite down the exhaust and it must exit the vehicle past the cab.

can't help you with the tint, but dumped exhausts of any kind are a nono in NJ. It NEEDS to have a accessable tailpipe. That's left over from the old sniffer days. I pass with a true dual Spintech system w/ the side exit. I have the loudest mufflers they make. I have spintech cats (gutted), so that I also pass the visual. That's all @ a state facility in Lakewood. Your 1st mistake was taking it to a state facility. Next time try a private garage, they're more reasonable. Now, I've done a new engine and a bunch of other stuff since the last go'round, I'm due to go back. Even though I think I'd still pass in Lakewood (the guy I go to doesn't give a shit), I'm going private this time. It's obvious from the way the truck idles that things are different this time

your dumped exhaust is NOT legal, you NEED an accessable tailpipe of some type.

Then for where I live, they do what was said above, visual inspection, for emissions. But I've never heard of someone being a jack@$$ and reving the engine through its top revs' and then rejecting. Again, I agree with the above mentioned, take it to the dirtiest place you can find, "holes in the wall" are better, just be sure he's not met he's limit for the month. They are being dicks because if they dont and state inspector comes in, he can and will shut them down. I worked in a bodyshop in NC years ago and it happened to my boss. He " inspected"(safety, we didnt have emissions at the time) a vehicle and it was a state inspector. We lost our cert and came REAL close to losing our jobs/ shut down......can you say fraud? He worked his way out of being shut down but we could no longer inspect cars.

The shop who wont even look at your car if your windows are tinted are violating a few laws. Number 1 tint has NOTHING to do with a PA state Inspection, you CANNOT fail a car for tinted windows. Number two, your not allowed to deny ANY inspections, your allowed to fail them for things that actually fail, but you cant just tell em to fuck off.

I'm going to try a more lenient inspection station that's 30 minutes from my house and it's on my drive to school anyway. The guy who did/redid my exhaust said he had trouble at the local inspection station and that I should go to the ones near my school. I don't get it, I had the exact same exhaust on my old Red R/T that I used to have and I never had problems, oh well. Also, someone mentioned something about the station being shut down if they have too many problems or failures or something, well, I heard that the local inspection station is being shut down soon.

This new no sticker deal in NC is weird, so used to driving around with the sticker on the windshield. Instead its computer oriented and if you don't get it reinspected by the required date, they mail you the ticket.

We only have to get the vehicle inspected for saftey when we first put plates on it. Emissions tests are done on cars every 2 years, or when the vehicle changes hands. (Every time a different owner puts a set of plates is put on, it goes through both a safety and emissions test). Owners keep their plates, and can use them again when they buy a new car. Stickers for license paltes are bought in either one year or two year intervals. You can't get a sticker if you don't have an emissions (if your car is due) or if you owe the highway tolls money.
I kinda like the one inspection when you buy it thing...........but the downside to that is if someone drives theire car for years and it becomes a complete POS, no one is the wiser unless MTO or a cop pulls them over ......

Im just going to add all this BS by adding a quote from my local shop that inspected my truck...
*Mechanic walks up next to my truck and attempts to look in window while saying*"Just put the reg and insurance on the HOLY ILLEGAL TINT...Doesnt matter anyway, we dont look for that for inspection, thats the cops job"
I might add that I called today as well, and asked again, to be sure...He said that TINT is not a part of the PA inspection...
So then, to be sure, I called the shop down the street I said "Hey Im looking to get my truck inspected and it has dark tint on the windows, would I pass...He said..."Doesnt matter to me at all, as long as everything else is fine with the vehicle tint doesnt mean a thing to me" I asked if he was just being nice, and he stated "Its not even part of the inspection process..."
So MIDDLERIGGLE You might wanna find a inspection place elsewhere...

At times I wish Colorado had a safety inspection program again. It would cure all these defective taillights, brakelights, turnsignals, and headlights. Not to mention some of these cracked windshields. Friend of mine used to manage one of the local Grease Monkey lube shops. He got tired of seeing the same cars come in every few months with the same burned out lights and the people refuse the repair. Finally, he started keeping a spread sheet of these cars. Each month he would match to see if people were repeaters, and he did this for a year. His shop averaged 500 defective vehicles per month, 85% refused repairs for bulbs. Of those 500 each month, roughly 40% were repeaters during the year.
Colorado only requires an emissions test, 92 and newer have to be run on the dyno/tailpipe test. The Dak. being AWD is too long to run on the dyno, so it gets the old school tailpipe test and no dyno. Last time it passed with my SC tuner turned on, this time will try it again with tuner on. The Audi fits on the dyno, so it'll get the whole thing. Changed the oil on it today, will take it for emissions next week, the Dak. will get an oil change in two weeks and then go for testing.

We don't have inspections here, the closest we come to is the occasional State Police road side safety check. Pull into a store parking lot next to a major roadway, set up a lane & scales (for big trucks) and another for passenger vehicles. They nail quite a few for inoperative equipment, loud music or loud exhaust. You wouldn't imagine how many get busted for no car seat for kids under 3.

Missouri doesn't do emissions testing.
I picked up the inspection book for Missouri and read through it on the questionable things. Inspection stations don't inspect tint - state troopers do. Also, my exhaust is dumped under the bed but the Missouri paperwork reads:
11 CSR 50-2.260 (3) Reject Vehicle if: (G) Tailpipe fails to discharge exhaust away from under passenger compartment of commercial motor vehicles.
