Hey guys. Some stupid punks broke into my 98 Durango and tried to steal it this weekend. They broke in through the door handle and destroyed the steering column to get to the ignition (damn glow ring design). The morons would have gotten it too, but they popped the ignition fuse and must have gave up. I don't know why the factory alarm didn't go off.... If it did they would be in the hospital or worse. I don't know why anybody would want an aging durango with almost no gas.
I replaced the fuse started it with a screwdriver and parked it in the garage. Lots of wacky electrical problems now. I just replaced the column hoping all the weird problems would go away but no.
For some reason as soon as you put the key in the ignition, the horn starts going off. Once its started, the wipers start going. The radio, rear wiper, power locks, interior lights, dash lights, and rear defrost don't work. It also keeps reading gate open. All the fuses are good.
Any ideas to what is wrong with it?

Sounds like they screwed up the mecahnism in the door
The door lock tumbler is linked to teh security system and something probably got damaged in there causing electrical problems (shorts)
That sux
The short could be causing the BCM (body control module) to act up it controls all those things you speak of
Glad they didn't get it.
Hey, there was a guy here in Windsor sitting in his car with his chick downtown, 2 crack heads were checking car doors to steal what they could from open doors and he opened the passenger door of the car with the couple sitting in it.
The guy got out and punched the dude in the face and he fell and died from hitting his head in the fall..
The guy got charged with manslaughter and received 2 years less a day and about 20K in lawyers bills..
It was all caught on security tape to prove these guys were ransacking cars too..
Sometimes it's not worth catching them in the act..
I feel like moving to Texas, I believe you get an award for something like this , not prison time.

Yeah the problem seems to be in the door. I disconnected the connection right at the lock and everything seems to be fine now. Now i just need get the damn drivers door repaired and repainted.
As for insurance, I took full coverage off it at the start of the year. I figured since it was 10 years old it wasn't needed anymore. Thats how my luck goes.... I need to get an alarm now apparently.
As for those thieves, I'd have no problem teaching some punks a lesson with my baseball bat. Then calling the cops to come get them.
Seems fair to me: Catching them breaking into your vehicle. Use a bat on them to defend yourself and your property. Make the punk kid cry and give up. Call the cops to come get them. Give out a punch to the face every minute until the cop arrives.

that's what I was thinking. have you at least called them to check?
so you cancelled "full coverage" what do you have for insurance then? state minimum liability only?
I don't have full coverage on my vehicles, but they are still covered if there's loss or damage due to theft, fire, nature, etc.
those risks are so minimal, that typically they are automatically covered under minimum type insurance.
...unless you're a shitty driver with a terrible record, and no one will insure you, requiring you to use high risk insurance like safe auto.
call them to ask. best case scenario--they say it's covered and you get to send it to a professional shop for repairs. worst case scenario--they say it's not covered, and you're out a 5 minute phone call.
what do you have to lose?

Uhhhrrrr, you might want to re-read YOUR policy. "Liability only" is just that. It only pays out for property damage and bodily injury caused by an accident in which you are at fault. It does NOT pay out damages to your vehicle. Damage to your vehicle in an at-fault accident is covered by collision. If you want fire/theft/vandalism/glass/weather/tree falling coverage, then you have to carry comp. That's why the call it 'full coverage'. If you don't have full coverage, then you are NOT covered for fire/theft/etc. And AFAIK, you can't get comp without collision or vice versa. Its either liability only or the full package.
Liability only doesn't need to be (and absolutely should never be) at state minimum level either. I carried 100/300/100 liability only on my Ramchargers because they were not worth paying the premiums for comp and collision. After the deductible I'd get a couple hundred bucks at most if they were stolen or barbecued.

I think you mis-read my post. I asked if he had liability only--I never said that I have liability only, which is also why I asked about state minimim insurance from companies like safe-auto who provide liability only to high risk drivers.
by the way, you CAN have Liability, Collision and Comp, WITHOUT having full coverage. I know this, because that's what I have. What I don't have is all that extra shit that comes with "full coverage" like roadside assistance, free rental when mine is in the shop, free towing, shit like that. it lowered my insurance nearly $200 per vehicle to eliminate "full coverage" and go with liability, collison and comp ONLY.
and I would still ask about damage from teft/vandalism. I called to take my truck off the insurance while it was off the road for 9 months during the big block swap. they reccommended that I not do that, and instead get the absolute bare minimum policy, which cost me $5 for 6 months of coverage...yes, FIVE DOLLARS, and it covered me in case of theft, fire, vandalism, acts of god...anything that could go wrong while it sits in a driveway/garage.
so...again, like I said. call the insurance folks, ask them about coverage. ABSOLUTE WORST CASE SCENARIO IS THAT THEY TELL YOU YOU'RE FUCKED AND YOU'RE OUT A 5 MINUTE PHONE CALL!!! what do you have to lose?

I have full coverage on my vehicles. The difference is so minimal so I just get ful coverage. It may cost me slightly more but its worth it IMO

Oh. I've never heard of anyone referring to L+C+C as anything but full coverage. Whether it has the rental coverage/roadside or not. (That is considered 'frills', not coverage.) I'm sure he means that he dropped the comp/collision and just carries liability. That's what every other person in the world means when they say they dropped full coverage. And if that's the case, he can save his 5 minutes.
I'm still having a hard time believing this $5 policy covered everything. Unless there was a clause that said if it leaves your driveway they drop you and pay no claims. I have 100/300/100 liability, and the premium for that is less than what the comp and collision premiums are. And the neighborhood I live in is low risk. So while I can understand a 15/30/5 liability premium being only like 5 bucks, I can guarantee you it didn't include comp coverage.
