Well after a long but good day at work yesterday, I get in my truck in the parking lot and check for any messages on my cell phone. I had one message which was my dad, who was really upset and said that someone had hit and killed my dog. I only had him for a couple of months which made the situation worse. However what I cannot understand and cannot stand, is a person who hits somebody's pet but doesn't have enough decency to stop by and let you know what had happened, they keep driving as if the animal was nothing more than a squirrel or rabbit...this is someone's pet, not some wild animal. Even if they didn't know who the dog belonged too they could have went to the nearest house (which in this case was mine) and tell a neighbor that they hit a dog but didn't know who it belonged too. To top off the situation someone stopped by my dog and removed all the tags from his collar...for what, I have no idea? I still have no idea how the hell my dog even got out of his pen in the first place, its over 6' tall, the door was secured when I checked after he was killed, no spots were dug under the frame where he could escape, my dad and I think maybe someone let him out but we live on 65 acres so there aren't a lot of people walking around and the pen is in the back of the house. What started off as a good day turned into one of the lousiest days in quite a while, and with all the cold weather we've been having, digging him a grave will be quite a chore.

Losing pets...especially dogs is like losing a close family member, I only had Bentley for about 3 months too. It would have been nice for the person that hit him to stop by and say so. But this is a world where people dont have "the time" to stop by and do the right thing, I guess.

Yeah, I'd like to know where the tags are, we thought maybe whoever hit him took them off to turn into the police but so far I haven't been contacted by anyone, but if you're gonna go through the trouble of taking the tags off wouldn't it be easier to stop by a house? My dad said he was hit about 150' above the mailbox, my nearest neighbor is about 1/4 mile from me so it shouldn't have been to hard to guess what house the dog belonged too. Too make matters worse the ground up here is nothing but stones so I guess I'll have to bury him at my mom's place next to her dog.

He was a mix, I adopted him from a local shelter. We knew he had some pit bull in him and we were guessing australian shepard. He was multi colored, white body, with brown, red and black patterns. The only pics I have of him are on my cell phone and I cant figure out how to transfer them to my pc, this incident makes me wish I took more pics of him using a camera...guess I took for granted that he was a year old and nothing would happen to him, I was wrong.

i couldn't be any sorrier for your loss. I can't imagine how hard it must be. I couldn't imagine losing my pup. she's been a part of my life since I was 6 years old. I wish you all the courage to work through this because as people have said, losing a dog is like losing a family member because these animals will give you unconditional love

I feel your pain! :sorry: I've buried 3 of our family pets (dogs) and all were due to being hit by cars. It felt like I was burying a family member with every one of them. We have since installed an invisible fence and the 2 we have now won't go near it. Gives us a lot of peace of mind!

sorry to hear my friend.its never easy to let any part of our family go...i have never understood how someone could hit an animal,,and in this circumstance your dog,,and not have the common courtesy to make sure someone knew...much less to remove the poor things collar..that rediculous..i hit a dog once,,poor thing just ran right out in front of me and there was no way i could avoid it,and immediately i pulled over and stood bye with it,,checking with what neighbors i could get to answet their door, but alas noone knew whos dog it was,,so i had to call the pound to come pick her up..broke my heart too see it writhing in pain..

That sucks man.i remember years ago our dog got out of the yard.We got a call from one of our neibours saying the herd a loud yelp,so they looked out the window and saw our dog in the middle of the road.My dad ran down there to see,and all i can remember is him carrying him home limp in his arms. That was some sad shit,i wish we could have caught that prick and given him a beating..

for once I agree with Fluffy, Karma is a bitch and it'll come back to bite them

there is nothing harder than losing a pet, as much as we can try, there is nothing we can say that will ease your pain. at times I almost think it's harder than losing a person. I know when my Mom died it was rough for sometime, I almost hate to admit it, but when my Dog goes I'll probably be in even worse shape.

sorry for your loss but you should of kept your dog in your yard. After all not like the driver meant to run your dog down. its as much your fault as the driver that hit the dog. So dont blame a driver that had no choice in hitting your dog. Lots of people dont stop either they look at it as an animal or if the owner really cared about the dog it wouldnt be in the middle of the road. people gets real angry when some one hits their dog and gets physical. Next time keep your dog in your yard and it wont get hit.

I've lost many dogs. Only one was hit by a car and it was my fault. I left the gate unlocked and she lifted the bolt with her nose and got out. I felt really bad and especially since she was my wives baby. I loved the dog too. I've had to bury 3 of them in the last 7 years and it hurts every time. So I know what you are going thru. I think that if someone accidently hit your dog, it probably scared them. I don't know. I know I would be real scared and upset. If it is some asshole, then probably not. I'm not taking their side in this at all. I wish someone would have stopped and told us when they hit our dog. They didn't. I'm still kinda pissed about it. However, I did tell the police. We have a problem with people speeding on our street. I'm very sorry for your loss. If it helps, go get another one as soon as possible. It makes it better.

Read my first post, I said he was his pen...the door was still locked and secured after we found him. I wouldn't let him out of his pen unless I was outside to watch him or I had him on a leash. You might want to read the whole post before commenting...I've had enough dogs to know how to properly take care of them, thank you.

That fucking sucks.

what sucks more is when you're the one who has to kill it.

we had a puppy, picked it up off the side of the road, it was already about 6 months old. was going to be a big fucking dog to. pretty, brown, mostly german sheppard.

well, the damn pup had already gone ferrel. we would put him in the back yard and he'd cower and hide in the bushes all day long until it was feeding time, at which point, he tried to fight our other dog for food, even though we put 2 bowls out, and they were 30 feet apart from each other.

we would try to get him to take him to the vet to get checked out, get shots etc. and he would run away not letting you get any closer than 15 feet, unless you cornered him, at which point, he turned aggressive.

we gave him 3 weeks, sitting out there talking gently, softly, playing with our other dog to show that we were no threat, hoping he would turn around.

after 3 weeks of no improvement...I had to put the 12 ga to the back of his head. talk about a bad fuckin day.

it sucked, and I hated to do it, but Iwasn't paying a vet $200 to do what I could do just as humanely, and I wasn't going to have a 140 lb full grown dog that could turn aggressive at any time. not with babies in the house.

still in the end the pen wasn't secure if he found a way out. dont blame the person who hit him. Not his fault that your dog got out. Thats your fault or whoever was in charge of him. When I had a dog she was on a chain in the side yard and somehow she broke the chain and ran out in the road. Person hit her and kept going. I blame myself for her getting lose. Not the person that hit her. She lived thank god and after that we made sure she was secure from getting out.

I feel bad that your dog got killed but your blaming the wrong person in this matter.

I am quite sure you know how to take care of a dog. never said you didnt. I said it isnt the drivers fault in this situation. Its your fault for not making sure the pen was secure. SO blame yourself and not the driver. I get sick of people blaming a person driving and have a dog dart out in front of them and people thinks they should be able to stop on a dime and avoid the dog at all cost. Its the real world if a person has to choose to hit a dog or wreck their car. most will take the dog out. Would I stop and find out who the owner is? NO because people are crazy when it comes to their animals and not getting in to that confrontation. Will I feel bad about hitting the dog? Yes I will feel bad about hitting the dog. I feel bad when I hit a squirrel. but not getting in to a situation of someone trying to cause me bodily harm . just because i hit a dog.

yall can call me cold hearted but this isnt the drivers fault.

if a small wild animal jumps in front of me--I try to hit them. darwinism. if the animal is too dumb to think he can live by jumping in front of a 4000 lb vehicle moving at 60 mph...they shouldn't be able to reproduce anymore. it just makes you and me dumber.

think about it. if squirls become dumber, then whatever eats them gets dumber because they don't have to out-think the squirl. it works it way up the foodchain to us.

dumber squirls mean dumb people.

Thanks man, I appreciate that. On a better note I just got another dog. Doing things much differently now. He stays inside during the day, when he goes outside he's either walked on a leash or in the pen, and attached to a long lead, just in case he manages to find a way out of the pen, the lead will be an extra barrier. When I'm at work a relative comes over to let him out to relive himself. Since this dog is so much younger than the other one I have him enrolled in obedience classes too. New dog is a pit/rot mix gonna be a large dog, which is how he got his name...Diesel.

He's only 4 months old and he's all paws...which is amazing because for all the paws he has he has absolutely no coordination, lol. Hilarious when he tries to go from a dead stop to a full out run on our wood floors, runs through everything before he gets to where he wants to go. He seems to have more of the Rotweiler look than the Pit, he's all brown except for the muzzle area is black. Very good dog so far, only problem is I've got him half trained to go outside to use the bathroom, he doesn't seem to want to take care of his other business unless its in the house, lol  I'll let him outside for an hour or so to take care of business yet he comes in the house and leaves a nice pile on the floor. The Shelter I got him at had a Rot/German Shepard mix, about 4 months old, very nice dog but he had 10 adoption applications on him already.

Ah Damn...I've always wanted a Doberman. I'm like you though...every pet that I've had has been from the shelter. Why not save one from dying instead of buying one outright from someone. Most likely, the animal shelters are cheaper than buying one from another person anyway.

Diesel's a badass name too.

Doberman's are absolutely awesome, but purebreds always get to go to a home, shelter animals aren't always that lucky. As soon as I saw this dog I signed the application forms, the next day the shelter called and said I could pick him up. The shelter gave him the temporary name "Freddy" but Diesel is a much more suitable name for him. More than likely he's a Cummins because he's always moving around plowing through things and never stopping, certainly not a Powerstroke or Duramax, lol.

That's too funny, he's gotta be a Cummins! He sounds like fun man...well I'm glad you got another one bro. Still waitin on some pictures! Just kiddin, whenever you can though...he sounds like a goof ball, in a good way. :D
