I had to recently drive from the DC area to Oklahoma for my mothers funeral. I was crossing the Arkansas Okla state line and i blew a tire.
I had the tires for 3 years and less than 18k on them. I got to ma destination. called Tire Rack. I had purchased the Extended road hazard and everything. They told me that i needed to take the tire to a dealer and have them call. So i did that, they dealer said it was a defect in the tire, the belt had broken.
So he called Tire Rack,we spoke to 5 people and 3 supervisors. they told him that due to the mileage of the tires the truck must have set and buckled the tire, since i had low miles. My truck never sits longer than 2 days. i just don't drive around wasting mileage.
Long story short, they offered me 4 bucks towards new tires. I even told them the situation and still they did nothing. So Tire Rack will never geting a dime of my business and Extended tire warranties are worthless. Please do not buy from them. I bought 3k in tires and warranties and got screwed. Hope thier warehouse gets hit by a meteor.

4 bucks!?!? :flippy:
That sucks man, I've ordered a couple sets of tires through TR and was impressed with the cost and the fast shipping. The second set I bought was continentals for the dak, which at a little over 20k were down to the wear bars. I thought that was bullshit so I called TR to see what they would do for me, with the tires being well within the warranty period. They said I had to first buy another set of tires through them, then provide proof of when (date and mileage) the old tires were installed and removed. Then I had to pay to ship the old tires to TR at which point they would issue a pro-rated warranty credit. So in other words, they already have your money for the new tires, which of course you would have had to install right away when the old ones were removed. Then, after you pay to ship the old tires to them, they come up with some warranty credit amount. If you don't like it, what is your recourse? You've already bought new tires, which aren't "new" anymore, and even if you could get TR to take the new tires back with a full refund (and they would probably make you pay for the shipping), you still have to go find another set and pay for another mounting and balancing. They have you by the balls. After that and your story I'm convinced Sams Club is the way to go for tires.

not to be a prick but what did you expect from an online store? Yeah they have better prices than a normall store but what do they do for you once you buy them? nothing from both your stories. Sorry about your luck man but ya kind of get what you paid for ... and tire road hazard warentys are pretty much a joke except for discount tires free replacement, all others are just pro-rated ...
and sorry to hear about your mother

I have never heard of a belt going bad from sitting. Tires can sit on a shelf for years and still be fine. My truck sits 6 months out of the year and I have never had any problems and I have owned it for 8 years now.
Sounds like BS to me.

Thats why I never buy online. I'm getting my next set from summit racing (because i live near their store so i can pick them up) ill never pay shipping or anything on tires because like was said before. After you pay to ship them back for warrenty and pay for mount and balance youre already out the extra money. Sorry for your luck with that though. thats shitty of them. did you try contacting the manufacturer?

One thing I saw on the tv was to look at the date of manufacture to see how old the tire really is. Discount stores have been known to sell tires that have sat in the back for over 8 years. They look brand new and yet are way past what would be considered a good tire. Having worked at a tire shop you should be able to find out the actuall manufacture date. Might have sold you some very old tires. As for tires sitting and causing belt failure, I would belive the only time that may happen is if you let the tire go flat and sit like that for a long time.

yeah, some tire shops sell old tires, I know back when i worked at Discount Tire i would write off tires older than 4 yrs old, most the time we could get our money back or a portion of it back depending on the brand of tire...
just recently I was driving on a 9 yr old tire and didn't even know it ... it was the orginal spare for my truck and when i finally went to sell the wheel i checked the date on the tire and was suprised cause the tire looked bran new .... so alway check that when your buying tires ....
its pretty simple to tell...the last 4 digits on the DOT # are the week and year it is made so 2408 is a tire made in the 24th wk of 2008.. now for 90's tires, which hopefully you dont see them anymroe it was only 3 digits 2 for the week and one for the year so 249 is 24th week of 99 ... and they also had an arrow next to it so if you see a tire (which i doubt you will) with 3 digits and no arrow its actualy made in the 80's :jester:

Thanks for that info. Always wanted to know how to read that information. To bad they would not help you out more. I always thought thats what the road hazard or warranty was for.

With some manufacturers (IE. Firestone, Goodyear) if you go to one of their corporate stores they can help you out. Thats how it was when my buddy worked for Goodyear and Firestone.

First very sorry to hear about your mom. My condolences to you and your family
Thats exactly the reason i buy my tires locally. Buying online is good but I usually look and see what the cost of the item and the shiping is. if its a substantial amount then i may buy it online. I always have to think well this guy has a brick and mortar business not simply a guy on a phone taking orders calline a manufacturer and shipping it out ( basically a middleman).Yeah I may pay a little more but when i have a problem I can reach over the counter to strangle someone. I cant do that over the phone.
I get flats a few times a year and its nice to just pull in and they fix it for free. Just tires ( a goodyear tire chain) have a life of the tire warranty. If somethign happens to it before the tread bars show and they cant fix it they replace it. At that point you can buy the extended warranty on the new tire and keep going. I bought GY MTRs and I had one nail in a part they couldnt fix. the tire was abotu 1/2 worn. they ordered a new one they swapped it out and all I paid for was the warranty on the new tire which was 28$. i didnt have to buy the warranty again but I chose to

Np
Just depends on where you buy from really, I know the replacement that discount has is a full free replacment and we only didn't replace it if we could tell it was due to mecahniacl failer on the care i.e aligment and such ..
the majority of the road hazards out there are just pro-rated anyways so they won't help much when you have an issue.

i actually did not gpo tp TR looking for a better price, they just happened to carry what i wanted and thought they were reputable. I will not skimp on tires because you get what you pay for, in this case i got screwed. Even Perelli said 3 years is too long, am i supposed to buy tires everyyear? the new Falkens i just bought i bought locally in OKC from a truck supplier and had 4800 pound stems put in, DSW south of Norman. They were kick ass and had great service, even straightened the rim for free. now back in DC, i may have a lil trouble getting service, but i know i can call DSW and they will help me out. I also buy from Costco for my dd. It was just hard to get 295 40 20 a few years ago for my Durango. that was why i got from TR. I always check the date on the tires, over 4 months i ask for newer ones. I am not a newb on this, just thought TR was a stand up business. Just wanted my fellow DD bros and sisters to be aware.
