My son had a sleep over last night. I decided to take them out to breakfast and then to the mall for some shopping. We arrive a few mins before the place opens and get front row parking. Were just milling about, playing with the shopping carts when all the sudden people start running for their cars and haul ass outta the garage. I look over and see flames shooting out of my truck hood.
I guess the adjuster will be over tomorrow. More than likely they'll total the truck out. Just roughing it... I saw ~$3k in damage. Book value is for crap on these trucks now. What a PITA!

It seems like the fuel crossover ruptured. The firemen were disappointed when they showed up looking to wreck stuff with their axes. Lucky the rentacops were close by and I emptied their extinguisher as well as another one from the mall.

Could go either way. I dont want to lose this truck because it has all the options, window sticker, 4 wheel abs, 1 owner, etc.
Windsheild is cracked. Hood is melted. distributor/wires toast,
I havent torn anything down. Once I let the adjuster look at it, ill know more.

Your insurance company won't repair it so it will be a total, but still you can buy and rebuild!
No one else has said it but thank god you and your children weren't in it when the fire started.

My guess, and this is just a guess. The Evap hoses that go from the purge solenoid to the charcoal canister under the cab melted onto the headers and caught fire working thier way up too the engine bay and melting the fuel crossover which accelerated the fire.

All those evap hoses were routed away from the headers. There was nothing melted on the headers from what I saw.

We forgot to tell you the BagII curse hits all of your vehicles once you get a GenII.
This is what you get for having a running genII.
But anyways, good you, and your little freinds are not hurt. The truck is replaceable.

This truck burned the same way, but he had a piece of regular old fuel hose with clamps as his cross over. Yours actually looks salvagable to me. Did the interior get smoked out?

Just a bunch of fire extinguisher dust and that plastic smell.

in my opinion, if they consider it a loss...buy it back....it really doesn't look too severe, you have to many wires that, im sure need replaced, but didnt burn thru
the air cleaner didnt even look that bad....sounds like your quick thinking saved it

Wow Steve, those pics are horrible to look at. I have to say though that engine bay shot was pretty clear to tell the ignition point of the fire since it was so charred near that crossover line. Kinda scary thinkin' that line can rupture like that.
Like everyone has already mentioned, the buy back idea sounds like a plausible one. But bottomline is you and your kids are safe, nothing else beyond that matters much really.

I had a truck catch fire while I was driving it. The insurance company DID NOT TOTAL IT. they wanted to fix it so I said ok. 12 000$ in damages. the truck became the WORSE headache of my life. Back and forth to the dealer changing this and that you name it. after abotu 1 year of back and forth no end in sight of getting it workign right i sold it. i even told the guy what went wrong with it and he still bought it. personally unless the truck has some major value to you or you plan on redoing the whole truck I woudl move on to somethign else.

Normally they will total anything that has caught fire due to the fact that when repaired or attempted to repair the electrical gremlins show and generally never go away.

If it's total lossed then he can't take anything off of it. My buddy totalled his 97 Sport and didn't have a OEM exhaust to put back on it so he lost his gibson.
