I bought my Dakota about 5 or 6 months ago. I've been waiting for my tags, registration, and title for all this time. I've been going by there once a week all this time to try and get them. I went by 2 days ago, they told me that the place has like 10 law suits against them. I have to call some attorney. So I did. He told me to wait on a letter. I got home and it was there. So I open it. I have to come by and get the Title from him. Then I have to go down and do all of the stuff myself. I've already paid for this. Why should I have to pay again? I told him that since he has 10 lawsuits to deal with, he can add another one on. Make it 11. I was one of the lucky ones. See, it comes down to the fact that they sell used cars for a good new car stealership. They didn't pay the other stealership for some of the cars they sold. Then didn't get the tax, title, and licenses for them either. They paid the other dealership for my truck. If I could find the fucker I would kick the shit outta his ass. I'm gonna nail him for the most I can get under the law. I don't care if he has any money or not. He don't pay, then other means are necessary. Why does this shit always happen to me?

that's one reason I prefer to deal with private parties when I buy a vehicle; God knows; I'll never have a brand new one even if I hit the lottery!

I would have been busting their balls a lot harder, a lot sooner.
I was already beginning to get pretty upset at the dealership because my Ram took over three weeks to process the loan/green slip, because I've never had to wait more than 3-4 days for previous vehicles. I just got the green slip a couple of days ago, gives me less than a week to register the vehicle & mail off my first payment.

That's kinda fucked up.
On a second note - how does it work down there? You guys just sign the paper and drive away? Up here he have to have the vehicle/plates registered to us, along with proof that we have insured the vehicle BEFORE we even leave the lot with it.

Dak nut; I understand that; more reason to do private party.
GWhaley; in IL we have what sounds like the same thing you do; if we don't have a trade in or bring in a set of valid plates they do the paperwork right there before you leave the lot; if youre not paying cash the car lot calls your insurance agent to be sure you can get ins. before leaving the lot. (and full cov. is a must as long as any $$$ is owed)

yeah no way I would have left the dealer WITHOUT the title.
YOu can sign all the contracts and promises you want.. it aint yours until the paperwork says so!
No title = no sale.
Another reason you look at the title is to insure there are no disqualifiers on it like "SALVAGE" or "REBUILT".
Unfortunately people are too passive and seem to think everything will get worked out. I make a complete asshole of myself until Im satisfied. Try it next time! :D

Did you buy the truck outright, or finance it?

In Nebraska, you just have to have valid insurance for the vehicle, then you have 30 days to get it registered.

i hate selling my truck to a private party. i always hear horror stories odf people not registering the trucks getting in wrecks and youre still the registered owner. I personally have been lucky. the few cars i sold were usually to family. One truck was sold to a unknown but the guy was cool and he registered it. I actually hate going car shopping used or new it doesnt matter. believe it or not the Dakota was my first new car I ever bought. Everythign else was used and paid cash

Same here, but it's 21 days. They just stick a paper tag in the back window.

Huh, here in WI the dealer has new plates right there. If you have plates to transfer they transfer them online for you and the transfer cost is lumped into the selling price. Same with if you don't have plates to transfer, they put new plates on and lump the first year of registration and the new plate fee right into the purchase price. So you basically roll off the lot with valid plates and the first year paid for, you don't need to contact the DMV at all. Also, I bought my truck on a Saturday and of course my insurance agents office was closed. I was told by the finance guy at the dealership my insurance policy has a clause just for that situation, and that as long as I called them Monday I'd be fine if anything were to happen. I must have seemed worried about that, because he told me to go ahead and leave a voicemail with the vin # if I wanted to.

What insurance do you use?? Mine is open 24hrs 7-days a week for any emergencies, or new policies if buying a new vehicle.

And yes, there is a clause in most insurance policies to cover that type of situation, or if you are test driving a car and wreck it, your insurance pays for it.

American Family. Later I realized I probably could have called the 1-800 # on my insurance card, but I didn't think of it then. I was too excited to take my new Dak home I guess :jester:

When I picked up my DD on a Sunday, I called my agent on Friday to tell him but I didn't have the VIN handy. He told me not to worry about it and that I had a few days (I think he said 3) to alert them after buying the car and I would be automatically covered for those days.

SC got me the tags for the X in like two weeks. All the other dtuff was done before I left the lot.
Had to have valid proof of insurance faxed to them before they would let me leave too.
The state wasted no time sending me a property bill...
good luck, hope you get what they have coming

I have a similar story.
we bought my wifes car in Lousiana. Then moved to Ohio. the car was financed.
well, to transfer the plates from lousiana to Ohio, you need the title, the real, no shit, title. not a memorandum of title, not a photo copy of title, not even a notorized copy of title.
So I go to the county branch of the state title office to fill out the form so they can send off for your title to change it to Ohio so you can get Ohio tags. I've done this before, but in a different county, and in Ohio, all DMVs/title offices, etc. are independantly run/managed, so what goes for 1, might not work at another (talk about fucked up)
the lady tells me "we don't do that. you have to get your title and bring it in, we've NEVER sent away for titles before, that's always the owner's responsibility"
WTF. the other place did it
...we're not them. Here's the phone number for the Lousiana title office.
uh gee, thanks lady, but the title isn't there, the title is at the BANK, because the car is financed, and the BANK holds the title until the car is paid for. NOT THE STATE!
so, I ask the bank for the title. they said "sure, no problem! we'll send that right out to you" yea, all they sent me was a copy of the title with a stamp stating "certified copy of original" fuck me.
so I try it anyway, and go into the DMV with my certified copy to try and get tags. "oh, I'm sorry, you need to go down to the title office and fill out a form and have them get your title, change it to Ohio, and then you can come back here"
..uh, I tried that. they told me they don't do that
well, I'm sorry sir, but they told you wrong, they do do that.
I tried again, same semi-retired dumb lady behind the counter, "we don't do that here" fuck this!
I got so pissed off, I pulled money out of our savings accoun and paid the fucking car off, so the bank had no choice but to send me the title, clean and clear.
the ordeal took me 6 months when it should have taken like 5-10 business days.
but, that's one more car payment that I'm not making!
(between the wife and myself, we have 5 vehicles, but didn't pay more than 10K for any of them--but the Cuda)
1970 Cuda, paid $12,000 in 2003
1998 Dakota, financed 9,000 for it in 2004, it's been paid off since 2006
2008 Nissan Versa, financed $10,000 even ($4500 trade in value on her POS Olds w/ blown head gasket!) just paid it off!
2004 Dakota, financed $10,000, had it for 3 months now
2008 Hyundai Accent, financed $16,000 for it, but we were $6,000 upside down on the Durango we traded in for it--but owed $14K on that loan, so we added 2K to our loan pay-off, reduced the monthly payment a little, and saved a ton in gas--this was back in May when gas prices initially took off.)

I own the truck. If you buy a new or used car or truck in the state of Texas, the dealership has 20 days from date of purchase to get the title, tags, plates, and tax done. If not I don't know. I need a lawyer to help me. Isn't there one on here? I still haven't gotten the title. The paper tag is like way expired. So I'll probably get a ticket soon. Especially as much traveling as I do. I'll just add it on to the lawsuit. Later.

Unfortunately for you, if he has 10 law suits pending, and if you sue, making 11, he will just file bankruptcy, and no one will get anything. So, make sure you figure out if he has any assets before tying any money up into an attorney only to find out there is nothing you can get.

Yes he does. A whole nother dealership. They have to have some cause they have an attorney. Have to pay him somehow. The bad part is my paper tag is expired. I need a new one until I can get my new tags and shit.
