I'm thinking about painting my door and tailgate handles to match my truck. I was wondering if any of you guys (and gals) can help me out with some info on the process. From prep, paint, clear, and everything in between.
I remember a while ago there was a break down and photos in the "Tips" section on the website, detailing the process.
Hopefully someone can help me out,
Thanks

what they do is use an agressive cleaner, then an adhesion promoter on the plastic parts. then primer, paint color, then clear over it all. had mine done to the doors. looks great. seen other style daks done like thins too, looks great when the truck is all one color like that.

ok guys, I started painting my handles today.
I'm testing the tailgate handle to see how it turns out before I paint the door handles. I cleaned it up, sanded, and hit it with an adhesion promoter.
First coat of primer then sanded, second coat of primer and sanded again, third coat of primer.
I was wondering if I have to sand the third coat of primer before I hit it with paint?
Help me out. :help:

I did mine last weekend. I have info and pics on my site. All you need to do is acouple of coats of primer then sand the last coat with 600 grit paper. Shoot the basecoat then lightly sand and shoot another coat. Then shoot the clear coat and lightly sand with 1000 grit paper, shoot clear again and lightly wet sand 1000 grit. Shoot another coat of clear and use rubbing compound and then shoot the last coat.

NOTE: the rubbing compound I use is for between coats, some are used after the last coat.

I got all my high-grit sandpaper at my local NAPA. Most automotive stores should have it in stock. Wetsanding is when you soak the sandpaper in water for a few minutes, then sand whatever your sanding, then every few minutes of sanding you dip it in the water to clean it off. When sanding with fine grits the dust can clog up the sandpaper easily and makes it useless, the water helps keep the sandpaper from doing this.

Thanks guys.
I'm still waiting on the paint, my buddy gets a cut price on it (50% off).
hopefully I'll have it completed soon and I'll post some pics.
Another quick question: what about painting the inside handles and other interior parts? is it the same process and same materials?
Thanks again

the process is the same with the interior parts you just need to pay close attention to getting the texture out of the parts you are painting...because if not when you prime and paint and clear it's likely that you'll have orange peel...but hey like i said the process is the same.....i have painted the factory black dash surrond and my vents....it's fun...lol...especially when you have nothing else to do

what was the cost of the paint where you were looking?
I didn't get the 50% discount. My buddy was away and I needed the paint, so I went myself and told them who sent me and the guy gave me 20% off.

if you add a touch of car soap, this really helps out. a constant trickle of water is best to keep the sandpaper from cloggin up.

For the interior, all I did was pick up some clear adhesion promoter(for plastic), vinyl dash paint, and a clear coat. I got all of these at walmart for a pretty decent price. I didn't bother with sanding, just cleaned everything really well and made sure that I got all of the cleaners off. Sprayed the adhesion promoter for about 3 light coats and 1 wet coat. Waited about ten minutes and sprayed a light basecoat. I just kept doing that until I got the colour I wanted. I would also spray a bit more adhesion promoter in between a couple of coats to help make it stick. After that was dry I sprayed about 2 light coats of clear coat and 1 wet coat. Waited til it all dryed and put it all back in.
I did all of my upper dash vents, tweeter covers, guage cover and door handles this way and it worked great. So far there haven't been any problems with any of it.
