View Full Version : 18" wheels on a Dakota?

Some salesperson was trying to shy me away from getting 18" wheels. He didn't think that it would look good. I'm pretty sure there would still be a good amount of tire on there.
Can I see some 18" wheels?

I might be going to the 18's also. I don't like real big rims and think 18's look real good. I will stick around and see what pics get posted...

20's haven't been "real big" for years lol, a lot of vehicles have 20's stock now

He wanted me to get some black 15" wheels and grab some 30+ inch tires.
...and that isn't the look I'm going for.
I picked 18" because I think they look big, without looking ridiculous. :D

I know 20's are not big by any means these days but I just like the way 18' look, hardly any different from 17's. I just like the look of a little more sidewall as opposed to the 20's. I do have to admit, there is a black cc on here that has 20" r/t rims that I love the way it looks. I would definately not get 15's except for drag slicks

Ok... lets review. Salespeople are hired to sell. They are not hired for opinions. People hired for their opinions are called "consultants"... pretty simple.

if you're lowered 18s are perfect for daily use -- good sidewall height on moderately priced lower profile tires.

I was looking at these wheels for my black Dakota. I like the simple look, but you'll still know that they're not stock. :)

you saying that the sidewalls are 55 doesnt mean anything unless you give the width as well...55 of a 235 is alot less then 55 of 275!

Not too bad...I think I like those, myself. How much coin they want for those? Are are they lighter, about the same or heavier than stock (15x8 5 split spoke)s? If different weigh, about how much?

I believe they are around $145 each for the 18s, but I can't find a weight.

18's are a good size....i went from 16 to 20 then to 18
weight will depend on manuf. and style....sadly...the lighter you go...the higher the cost
my 18's are lighter than the stock 16's that came with my truck, unfortunately...i cant get a taller tire because of the width...(for the rear)
sidewall height will either make the wheel look bigger or smaller.....color of the wheel too, no one could believe that my 20's were 20's, but thats because they were powder coated steel blue and had 275/40/20 tires

yup, he's right. incase you didn't know, the middle number is a percent of tread width.
when they say a tire is 255/55/18, that means:
255 = tread width in millimeters
55 = sidewall height, as in, 55% of 255
18 = rim size.
so, a 255/55/18 is 29" tall, with a sidewall height of only 140.25mm and a 235/55/18 is only 28.1" tall, with a sidewall height of only 129.25mm.

and no, I'm not rainman, I wrote a calculator program in excel that shows me all these numbers, all I type in is the size like 255/55/18, and I get sidewall in mm, sidewall in inches, diameter in inches, circumference in inches, circumference in feet, revolutions per mile, and distance per 500 revolutions.
I did this so I could figure out what my speedo was really telling me after swapping tire sizes to a non-factory sized tire.

I know what you said. you said "55 doesn't mean anything without the width"
so then mthandt said "are you sure about that? I thought it was the sidewall measurement"
all I did was click "quote" from mthandt's post, so not sure what happened there.

Here is the calc I used.
http://www.dakota-truck.net/TIRECALC/tirecalc.html
My truck has 255-50-17's front and 285-50-18's rear. Basically a 2-3 drop but I can alter the rear about 3/4" with the air shocks.
