Here is a picture of what my old fluid caps & handles used to look like. I had the outer edges of the fluid caps plus the entire fluid handles powder coated candy blue, then clear powder coated for long-term protection.

Additional items that are available at extra cost:
Billet Aluminum Oil Cap - $27.00 includes shipping
* This billet aluminum piece fits over the top of an OEM oil cap
* This piece is plain - not engraved
* I believe this cap will only work for 3.9L, 5.2L, and 5.9L engines - anyone with a 4.7L V8 or 3.7L V6 should examine the picture to determine whether it will work properly with your factory oil cap
* These oil caps are not compatible with Mopar Performance Valve Covers.
Billet Battery Strap - $45.00 includes shipping
* This billet battery strap should work with both OEM and Optima batteries
* This piece is engraved with horizontal lines & ram's head
* The battery strap is produced/shipped raw - if you want to highlight the engraved areas with paint or powder coating you will need to perform this procedure on your own after delivery.
The same ordering procedures apply as detailed above.

Technically you could order the 5 pieces you need and skip the other 2, but the per-piece price for those 5 items is about the same as the discounted rate we're being offered for the whole 7 piece kit. I'm sure you could recoup a few bucks by re-selling those 2 extra pieces on the forum or e-bay...

if so do you see an issue with mixing and matching on a 7pc set??

Yes I can get you a '99-style washer fluid cap to go with your '00 kit - no problem, since the cap/handle kits are being built to order all at once. Just make sure that you remind me of that detail when you place your order.

Did you still want the engraving on the coolant/washer fluid caps?
Send me a PM with your preferences just so I have it archived.

Once upon a time he used to make some cool caps for Mopar valve covers, but he said he didn't want to offer them this time around - they take too much labor per unit to produce.

They are different companies, but I'm the one organizing both group buys.
I already have the billet fuse box covers in my hands right now. Dave @ Billet Pro was winding down and getting ready to close up his shop for good when I finally got ahold of him on the phone. Dave didn't want to make me just one cover for my own truck, so I convinced him to make a whole batch of covers. I used my tax refund to pre-pay for everything up front, and have been recouping my money as they sell one by one.
I have about 6x 97-00 covers and 6x 01-04 covers remaining - once they're gone, that's all folks. If you want to order both items right now I can ship the cover to you immediately, then follow up with the caps/handles when they're produced.

Yes, this is Randy @ Tooling Design Company making the caps/handles. He runs a machine shop full time, the automotive products were just a side project for him. The rest of his projects kept the shop really busy, and I think all the e-mails/phone calls/questions/comments/forums/etc. just ate up too much of his time so he stopped selling stuff online. I have been trying to get a batch of handles/caps produced for over two years through Randy or Bob Wagner, but couldn't get anyone to commit to the project until now.
That's the same thing that happened with Billet Pro over the past couple of years - he was still in business, but went offline to deal with wholesale bulk sales instead of individual consumers. In the end Billet Pro did go out of business so he could explore other ventures, but I was able to order that one last batch of covers before he closed his doors.

6-8 weeks is an estimate, depends on whether a constant flow of people remain interested in adding orders. If the orders stop coming in 4-6 weeks from now, I may close up the list just so production can begin. I will try to give everyone at least 1-2 weeks notice when I establish a final date. I would expect this to end sooner than later though, I don't want this to linger past the end of July.

OK, I'm going to do a viper fan kit from socaldakota at some point in the future, I assume that means I'd need '99 style washer fluid cap instead of '01? Anyone verify this?

I haven't set a fixed date yet, but for the moment everyone should assume that it will be closed off by the end of July so production can begin. It all depends on whether orders keep trickling in, and how many people definitely want to order a set but only need a little bit more time to scrape up the cash.

Yeah, I'd be interested in a 4.7 L oil fill cap too, but I also saw by the picture it wouldn't work. If they can make one for the 4.7, tack that on my list too!

I still need to give him a call to ask that question. The hard part is finding a block of time during the day that I can set aside at work to perform that function. As soon as I get an answer I'll forward it along.

I am still trying to find out whether he has a 4.7L oil cap available (or will create one) - left a message earlier today but haven't heard back yet.
I always encourage people to pay as early as possible, because that way I can get each person's order tracked in my spreadsheet & confirm that the shipping info I have is correct ahead of having to scramble at the last minute. Manufacturers also like to hear how many orders are pre-paid ahead of time, it helps them prepare for production. It's not required, but it does help out in the long run.

I am still trying to get info on the 4.7L oil cap, but I figured I'd go ahead and set a deadline for the group buy...
The end date for this group buy will be July 31, 2008.
This gives people 1 month to get their orders ready & payments submitted, and then that's it - everything goes to the manufacturer for production.
I wholeheartedly encourage people to submit their order as soon as possible rather than wait until the last minute. The main reasons for this is the fact that it guarantees that your payment has cleared and gives me time to confirm all of your order details & shipping address. This also helps out the manufacturer because I can give them advance info on total quantities, it lets them prepare for the job better.
The information about these caps/handles and their prices are listed at the top of this thread in notes #1-3. If you have any other questions please send me a PM through the website.

The coolant cap & washer fluid caps are replacements, not covers. If you go back to post #1 and look at the first attachment, the coolant cap is in the bottom left corner, the washer fluid cap is in the top right corner.

This group buy is definitely happening - have been working with Randy to get this arranged for quite awhile. Single caps are $25/ea, then add $10 for paypal/packaging/shipping. If possible I'll try to find a smaller box for just a single cap and see if I can reduce the shipping costs - if that happens I'll refund you the difference.

I'm still getting caught up at work/home from vacation, within the next couple of days I will be sending e-mails to each individual in order to confirm every detail of your order - name/forum name/shipping address, year/make/model, and any special instructions (eg: no engraving, 99 washer fluid cap, etc.)
I was finally able to get ahold of Randy yesterday regarding the 4.7L oil cap (between him being busy and me being busy and then on vacation, it took quite a few calls to get lined up at the same time - didn't want people to think I forgot about them). He doesn't specifically remember offering a 4.7L oil cap, but he says he has some caps/files there that may correspond to the 4.7L engine. Can someone please send me a few good pictures of what the 4.7L oil cap looks like, so I can forward them to Randy? I'm also curious whether someone may already have a spare 4.7L oil cap lying around - I can fwd it to Randy in case he needs to see one in person.
Because of the oil cap delays, I may extend the group buy for another week or two so people can submit last minute orders. The main list of people who have already ordered/paid will be sent to Randy on time so he can begin processing. At this time I do not have a production turnaround estimate, when I have that information I will forward it to the whole group.

As previously mentioned - things have absolutely been hectic as hell here for the past month... I've worked 26 out of the past 28 days, I take care of my 3 kids every weekend, and a friend of mine from back in jr/high school dropped in out of the blue a few weeks ago needing a place to crash. It's been hard enough getting online, most of the time I'm defusing the bullshit from Fight Club.
Things should return to a level of normalcy here soon... Now that school has started they will most likely stop authorizing sat/sun overtime days for the rest of the calendar year, and the friend is moving on Sunday morning. Randy @ TDC is aware of the orders and said he has a number of parts on hand already, I wanted to send a personalized e-mail to each person triple-confirming their exact order and shipping address before I have Randy ship anything to me. With the qty of orders & level of detail I need to sort through it's going to take me at least 4-5 hours to get everything done, and I don't want to piecemeal it to make sure I don't screw up anyone's orders.

Ok I have sent a final confirmation to each individual who participated in this group buy (two exceptions: I'm not sure if slvrdakrt03 is registered on this site - sent him a PM on the DRTC forum, and I don't know Robert Inscoe's forum name - received order via snail mail).
Please check your PM box and respond ASAP. If for some reason you believe you were a part of this GB and did not receive a PM, then get ahold of me ASAP.
If anyone is interested in participating in this group buy at the last minute, please contact me ASAP - I'll see if it's possible to add you to the order before they ship out.
REMINDER: This is a ONE TIME group buy - the manufacturer & I have no plans of repeating this in the future.

It's not that I'm ignoring your PM's, I'm intentionally trying to respond to generic inquiries via this thread rather than PM's so everyone has the same information at once, rather than spending a huge amount of time processing individual responses to each person in the group buy (there's a lot of people).
I understand that you sent me the money back in June, but as previously described - the orders weren't submitted to TDC until the tail end of August (The August delays were because of work issues on my end - I already explained this). Randy hasn't made these caps in 3 years so they weren't kept in stock ahead of time, and they're not making these one at a time as orders came in... The only way I could convince them to make these products (especially at this price point) was to save up a bunch of orders and then they're producing the whole batch in bulk at one time.
I wish I had a specific answer for when the caps/handles will be ready to ship, but I don't have it right now. Randy's shop is very busy, this is a side project for him that he was nice enough to squeeze in with all their other jobs. Getting ahold of him via the telephone has been very difficult, and nailing down an answer on the fly is even harder. I talked with him on the phone yesterday and he said he needed a couple of days before he could give me a better idea of when everything will be done. As soon as I have better information available I will forward it to the group. I'm on the same waiting list as everyone else.
I have already asked if your two caps could possibly be done first because you're the only person who ordered a partial kit and have your upcoming shows. If that request is able to be done I'll let you know.

I have forwarded all requests for special engraving to Randy, but I've specified that I can't guarantee anything in advance. One of the biggest reasons why Randy stopped making these on a regular basis is because of all the custom options he was offering - it takes a considerable amount of time to perform custom machine work, the time vs. $$ simply wasn't worth it anymore. The only way I was able to convince him to make these for us was to order a bunch at once, the assembly line factor helps make it easier for him to squeeze inbetween his other work without hammering his profit margin.

Way ahead of you buddy! I've had the Mr. Gasket covers on them for 3 years. I've got the T&D radiator cap cover and battery strap and all I want are the master cylinder and PS cover to match.
I paid for these 3 1/2 months ago. The close date was supposed to be July 31 but for some reason it was left open until the end of August for the stragglers that couldn't make up their minds. Now it seems like the orders were just given to Randy 1-2 weeks ago and now the guys that followed the rules of the GB have to wait for their parts because a few couldn't get their shit together and decide whether they wanted to order!!
Sorry for the rant but when the rules get changed just to accomendate a few, it kind of pisses me off!

The delay from Aug 1 to Sep 1 was totally my fault on my end, life threw me a few hard curveballs. I ended up working 26 out of 28 days, an old friend showed up out of the blue needing a place to crash for the month, and I have visitation with my kids every weekend.
This group buy is also very different than most of the others I've hosted - we were purchasing products that were being produced on a regular basis and/or kept in stock. In this case the manufacturer hasn't produced these products in three years, and really had no active interest in starting up again because his shop is busy. I convinced him to make us a batch because he's a nice guy and we're buying a bunch of kits at once, but it's not like we're the top priority in his shop.
I'm in the same boat waiting for my caps just like everyone else, and am hoping we can get this wrapped up sooner than later.

Semi-update for everyone:
Dwight got his caps because he was the only person who ordered a partial kit, and Randy happened to have those particular caps on hand so they were rushed out to Dwight so he could make his car show this weekend.
Randy said that his current estimate is 30-45 days before the entire order is ready to ship, but his son is going to help pitch in with our order so that may give us some relief. Some of the caps are already done, but there's still a lot to go before the entire order is filled.
As soon as I have more information I will forward it along to people, but unless Randy calls me out of the blue I'm going to give him a few weeks before poking my nose in to see how things are coming along.

No, I'm not ignoring you. Most of my internet surfing is done a few minutes at a time, and I frequently have to set e-mails aside and try to respond to them later. With the sheer quantity of correspondence I get on a daily basis & the fact that I'm a total scatterbrain, sometimes e-mails slip through the cracks. The last time I talked to Randy, he said the short/current answer is "no". He stated that he would try to get the caps done first without any CnC'ing, then re-evaluate whether he will make alternative CnC patterns available.
With the way this group buy has dragged on because his shop has been so busy with regular jobs, I wouldn't hold my breath for custom CnC's.

I finally got ahold of someone at the shop today... I talked to Randy's son, he's been doing most of the work on this group buy because his Dad's just been too busy with their regular work. He explained that the reason for the existing delays is that when they started production, they realized that they couldn't find some of the custom tooling items they used in the past, so he had to re-create them. He says that he still needs about a month to wrap up everything, is hoping to have everything in my hands before Christmas.
Once again I'm sorry this group buy has taken so long - I'm a slave to their delays along with everyone else. Unfortunately there's no leverage I can place against them except for cancelling the entire order.

Thanks for the update, Steve. I'm surprised they decided to redesign anything to be honest, that was nice of them I suppose. I guess if we've waited this long another month really doesn't matter. At least this stuff has already been paid for up front, we really don't have much to worry about. That Innovations group buy really came back to bite me.

Right now they're trying to wrap up the handles, which are the most labor-intensive. He apologized for the lengthy delays, there's been two big factors that have dragged this out so long - his machine shop has been extremely busy, and these parts required some custom tooling that had to be re-fabricated because he hasn't made these in a couple of years.
The two people who PM'd me about battery strap questions - it should be fine to swap your order, we'll finalize everything when the parts are complete.

At this point I think it's best if I don't accept any more advanced orders, just to help things settle out. The last time I talked to Randy on the phone he made it sound like they weren't too far from being done. He also mentioned that there is some extra parts (which is typical for projects of this nature - they always make more than they need) and they will be offered for sale after the original orders have been shipped out.
Once again I apologize to everyone for how long this has taken. As soon as all of the parts are in my hands I will package them up and get them forwarded to each individual as soon as possible.

NEW INFORMATION:
Randy gave me a call today, sounds like they're starting to hit their stride towards the finish line. They have almost all of the caps & handles done, and are now moving on to the billet battery straps.
When the group buy was started, Randy thought that he had a bunch of battery straps leftover from his original production that were most of the way done, so orders were only accepted for the Ram's head straps, or with no engraving at all. It turns out that Randy has almost no straps leftover, so they're going to tool up and make all of the orders from fresh blocks of aluminum. What this means for the people in the group buy is a little flexibility with their orders...
Now there are a handful of options:
1) Battery strap with a Ram's head in the middle, and 3 horizontal lines on either side of the Ram's head (original group buy design, see 1st page)
2) Battery strap with 3 horizontal lines across the width of the strap, no logos.
3) Battery strap with "R/T" (the swept Dakota R/T font, not the blocky Durango R/T font) in the center. Scroll back a page or two and you'll see a picture of what that strap looks like.
If you have already paid for a battery strap there is no additional cost if you want to switch your order, you just need to let me know which one of the three straps you want. In order to keep this group buy moving along I am only opening up a window through Sunday 1/24/09 for people to change their mind - if you don't get back to me by that time, then your original battery strap order will be processed.
If you did not participate in the original group buy but would like to purchase one of these battery straps, then your orders can be added. Once again, orders are only being accepted through 1/24. The rates & payment methods still apply for battery straps, the information is located on the first page of this thread. Please send me a PM if you have any questions.
At the moment I am still holding back on accepting any more orders for the original billet cap/handle sets. Randy assures me that there are going to be some extra parts when everything is done and I will help make them available to people on the site at some point in the future, but I don't want to hold back the existing orders any more than they have already been delayed.

I talked to Randy this morning... He is hoping to be done with all of the caps & handles by the end of this week, and hopefully the battery straps won't be very far behind.
There's a new twist that I figured I'd forward along to people, but the details aren't completely worked out so is therefore NOT official yet. As I have described since the very beginning, these caps/handles/straps/etc. are being produced from raw aluminum with a slight polished finish. Just like any other bare metal, aluminum can tarnish a bit over time. This isn't a huge deal, but if you get your parts wet or dirty a lot you may have to get out some metal polish and give the caps some attention once in awhile. There are a couple of alternative coatings that can be applied to aluminum to make them look nicer and hold up to the elements over the long term - anodizing, and powder coating.
Randy sent a handful of spare pieces over to a local anodizer for processing, and let me tell you they look great (see attachment). It looks like we will be able to give people the option for anodizing, but there's a few catches...
1) It will cost extra - details are being worked out, but it will most likely fall between $15-40 per set of caps.
2) It will take at least an extra week for parts to be anodized.
3) There is a minimum charge per batch to have parts anodized, and each color option counts as a separate batch. This means that the number of colors/options will be very limited - it's possible that we might need 5-7 people to want the same style in order to make a particular color available at the original asking price - otherwise people would have to pay a much higher price to cover the batch fee if they insisted on a particular color.
4) People who do not want anodizing would not have to wait if we make this option available. Randy will ship those caps/handles to me when they're done, and I will forward them to each individual.
REPEAT: This is NOT an official option yet - but I figured I'd toss it out there in order to get some responses from people to see how much interest is available. If people aren't interested in coughing up the extra dough or waiting any longer then we can scrap the option and just get the group buy wrapped up soon.
SinCity R/T
02-09-2009, 08:47 PM
Something else Randy pointed out is the fact that the caps could be engraved after the anodizing process, so the engraved areas would be re-exposed aluminum, making those areas 'pop out', just like most people tend to do with powder coated mopar valve covers.

I am waiting for Randy to call me back with actual pricing per set, then we'll be able to compute how many sets have to be ordered in a particular color to cover the minimum batch fee. Once I have more details I will update the thread, I figured I'd just get the basic information posted to gauge how many people would be interested if it was made available. We're not going to wait long on this since some pieces are waiting to be engraved - either we move forward for the people who express interest, or we just set it aside and finish the group buy as-is.

Even though our trucks have different shades of blue, I could live with it being your shade or similar instead of my darker patriot blue depending on price. I would of course prefer patriot blue, so I might be one of those people that insist on a certain color and end up paying more. So for now count the two of us for a blue batch, but let me know what the cost would be if nobody else wants patriot blue and I go it alone.

wow way to much info, which is better in your opinion?
That works for me. We have 2 for blue, who else???????
-Ryan
All I ordered was a billet strap, but if this were an option, I'd be up for anodizing, red or blue would be color of choice.

Ok Randy forwarded the quote for anodizing... I am rounding up the $/piece to the nearest dollar just for simplicity's sake, plus PayPal will inevitably take a bite out of whatever you pay.
To have a set of 7 caps/handles anodized will cost $15
To have an oil cap anodized will cost $2
To have a battery strap anodized will cost $5
The anodizer has a minimum batch fee of $75, so there will have to be at least that much $$ worth of orders for a particular color to get this done.
I'm going to leave it up to you guys - if you're interested in anodizing and can promise at least $75 worth of work for a particular color then we'll set those pieces aside. This is a very short window of opportunity - people need to post up what they'd be interested in right away so we can get this organized.

I'm in for the 7 piece cap/handle set and a battery strap in blue.
ColoDak, are you in for sure with a blue battery strap?
DakotaLivLrg, what exactly did you order? Just the caps/handles, or a battery strap too? Let us know and we'll figure this out.

Okay so we need 5 for the caps and handles in Blue, you can count me as a fourth.:mullet: So we need one more set of caps and handles or a couple more battery straps.:waiting:

If there are some other people interested in the clear anodize then I will jump on. If not I'm good without anodizing. I will just clear powder coat them when they come in.

I like them both, but with CNC'd materials, anodizing will retain the details better because it's much thinner.

Randy sent me this to show the anodizing a little closer & how a strap would look if the CnC area was processed after the anodizing...

So on the caps and handles can I get them engraved with the stuff after the anodizing or has the engraving already been done?

Sin,
Can you remind me what I ordered?
Seems like 2 caps and handle sets and 2 battery straps.
If so I would like one of my cap and handle sets in blue and my R/T battery strap in blue as well.
I would like the engraving done after the anodizing if still possible for the blue items.
I also wouldn't mind mind getting my other anodized clear if that is possible and would be willing to pay a little more if there are not enough people.
Let me know.

Thanks for figuring that out man, you rock :mullet:
I think $20 is a steal for this, so if someone drops out I'd be willing to pay a little more to make it back up to $75.

Yeah not a problem and yeah $22 for my parts is nothing.
I also PM'd Colodak to check out the thread too. So with him we should be good and even without him were still over the $75 min
