My wife is going to the coast guard in a few months, and from her research there's only one thing I could recommend. Make sure you get your A-School guaranteed before you go. In the regular military you go to basic and then straight to the training for a job. In the USCG you have the option of going in non-rated (no specific specialty) and then you have to work as a grunt on a boat until an opening comes up for a school you want. And who knows how long that takes. Good luck. Do you know what you want to do yet?

DON'T DO IT!!! Unless you are 100% sure the military is for you. Take it from experience, there is no gray are in the military. Only black and white. If you get in and you find out that you don't like it, you're FUCKED!

The Coast Guard is NOT a bad job, but it is a military service. The oldest seagoing service This is a really good time to be in. I have no complaints.

There are ASVAB books you can get at the library or at a book a book store. I am an MK and was at an MSST which is now owned by the DOG. (check my DTW link, there is a pic there. I am now in a special assignments billet, I'm now one of the guys you don't want coming to talk to you.

Like said earlier, if possible try to get a guaranteed A-School, make sure you get it in writing. MK is a rate that has alot of flexibility. You can shoot me a PM if you have any questions and I'll try to help you out.
