I can't even remotely see myself getting rid of the Charger and spending $30k+ on a Dakota right now, but I think I'm going to hit up a dealership this weekend for a test drive just for shits & grins to see how they look & perform with the new 302hp 4.7L V8.
I'm curious whether anyone here has bought one yet, especially looking for feedback from someone who traded in a previous model for comparison. As mentioned above, I'm not gonna buy one, just curious...

I test drove one today and wasn't overly impressed. The engine was still new only four miles on it when I started, that could have played a factor. It was quick off the line but the transmission doesn't shift very smoothly under high RPMs. When passing on the highway, it didn't from 50mph to 70mph any faster than my dakota. Compared to my 05, the suspension was really stiff. The only real improvement that I noticied was during takeoff.

from the pics ive seen of it, id consider one if i didnt already have our MSRT8. not plannin on a new car anytime soon tho id consider it. def a improvement in the front end
Haven't driven one , yet , but I like the pics that I have seen of it . I wasn't too crazy about the previous style , so this is a step in the right direction .

i've been wanting to test drive one but the dealerships around me never get a v8 dakota in. all they have is the v6. I thought about getting a new dakota but they are over priced. for the same price if not less i can get a fully loaded silverado.

Well slight disappointment today, I don't have heated leather seats. Other then that i got everything i listed. However, the cold seats don't really bother me much to begin with and this truck heats up a lot faster then my old one. So all in all im happy with it so far. Only 36miles on the truck

Me and my dad had to modify my old bed cover off of my 06 to fit this one. But it looks nice. I have the alpine sound system setup in mine, came with the truck, but im looking to get rid of the stereo and install a dvd/cd reciever with a flip out screen. Given, i lose my satellite radio but i dont use it much anyways. Im also going to get me a nice 10" sub to stick in teh back, but im going to have to build a custom box for it. I also want to see if some bolt on engine parts from the first gen 4.7 will work on these new 4.7

Mine is a quad cab TRX with 4.7, auto, AWD, and one or two other options and it stickered for $32,500. I got it for around $27,500. My only complaint so far is the 13 or so MPG I'm getting.

I just found they juiced up the motor for the 2008 with enough HP that I could tow my trailer comfortably (4000 lbs dry). The TRX looks the best to me w/ the flares.
2008 Dakotas are advertised to have a max of 7000 lbs towing, I just can't figure out which model/options give you that. Anyone know? It makes spec'ing out a model a bitch.

The extended cab 4x2 is rated for 7050 pounds with the 4.7.The 4x4 crew is rated for 6800,the 4x2 crew is rated for 7000,all with the 4.7.My truck gets about 11.5 -12 mpg mostly city which im happy with (my sport trac 4.6 got about 10-10.5) and on the highway i can get 21mpg on a nice cruise, thats with only 900 miles on it so far.Im very happy with mine.

Thanks! Is there a special tow group I should be looking for (other than a receiver) like beefed up suspension, etc?
Racinartist
05-13-2008, 03:32 PM
As far as I know, the only thing they offer is a "tow group". It comes with receiver, wiring, oversized mirrors, 3.92 gears, trans cooler, etc. The suspension is the same on every model (except the TRX) as far as I've been able to find out. The TRX has a bit stiffer suspension, or at least shocks. Other than that, they all seem to be rated at about the same capacity.

I'm thinking about getting one of these myself, although the front end doesn't appeal to me much. I'd get the fully decked out one if I did, with NAV. I'm wondering if Dodge incorporated other vehicle designs in this. Like:
Cup holders light at night?
Cup holders have cold/heat option (Avenger)
Door windows have auto down on both doors? Auto up? Doubt last one.
LED Interior lights or no? (Charger/Avenger)
I hear the MyGIG is the shiznit (Charger forums)...yes no?
How does it drive? More power than the older 4.7 (butt feel). transmission better? Ride better than say a GEN 3? Overall comfort level?
Didn't see this but still have overhead computer with fuel EPA? Fuel economy.gov rates this at 13/19 IIRC. Thats kinda bad for today's times. And the new ram is suppose to be 20+ highway with a 5.7.
Anything else I miss? lol!! :stirthepo What I'm wondering really is this Dakota a good buy or just wait for the 09 ram. Something doesn't sit well with me that a lighter less power truck gets less EPA than its big brother due out.
BTW, guy above--those viper rims look sick on your ride bro!

because the new rams are all new from the grond up basically, which mean ALOT of work in the wind tunnel. And even though your eye might say "its still brick" youd be surprised how much you can change. I've seen some of the best engineers in the world shit a brick by what they can discover and what they can do in a wind tunnel.
ALSO dont forget the 5.7 shuts off 4cyl while cruiseing, the 4.7 doesn't.

I bought a 2008 Dakota Laramie Quad Cab first of the month. Traded my 2004 SLT Club Cab. I had a hard time getting used to the body style but am coming around. I liked the body style of the older generation 3's. My first quad cab - family is growing. It sits taller than my 2004 and I think it rides a little stiffer (not that that is bad). Over all I am very pleased with it.
