hi guys,
I'm new to the site. I bought a 99 dakota sport 3.9L 5spd extended cab last august. I have a few questions about performance exhaust. I found a dynomax cat back system on this site : http://www.performancepartswholesale.com/performance/buy.php?make=dg&year=1999&model=dakota&part_name=exhaust_system&brand=dynomax
Anyone have any input on this set up?
Also anyone have any info on performance headers for the 3.9L, ceramic, stainless steal will that make a difference or is the just looks?

Thanks

dynomax isn't bad, they make the oem muffler for the r/t and it sounds pretty good. 145 bucks doesn't sound like much, but I'm sure you could get an exhaust setup for under 100 dollars if you have a muffler shop do a custom setup. They can use a dynomax muffler if that's your preference and whatever tip(s) u like too. For headers, I'm sure you'll get a gain, but like anything you have to weigh cost/power gained and see if it's acceptable to you. Can't really say for sure, hopefully someone who's used aftermarket headers for a v6 can say if it was worth the cost.

i have an 00 dakota 3.9 and i orginally had a 2 chamber flowmaster 40 series single in dual out. i liked how it sounded at idle but when i got on it it sounded lousy way too much noise in the cab. but i recently had it replaced with a dynomax super turbo and its much better. it still sounds good at idle but quieter at speed which was what i really wanted anyway. i also have jba headers installed. didnt change the sound much nor did it help low end. i have more passing power now it moves pretty well for a six. if youve made mods to the intake side, cold air intake, v8 throttle body, in my opinion headers will help but dont expect a big power boost and you wont be disappointed.

My buddy had a Dynomax muffler on his 03 3.9 and it sounded like stock, i would go with Gibson, or flowmaster.

I had a Dynomax Super Turbo on my 98 3.9, and it rumbled like mad at idle. Kinda whiny in the upper ranges, but it was a mean sounding whine.

It seems alot of the people on here are more flowmaster oriented. When i brought my Dak into the shop for a custom exaust i wanted something that sounded great, but also wasn't so loud that i could be be quiet if i wanted to. I chose Magnaflow, it's a single in dual out setup, and the sound at idle is growling to say the least, and in the upper rpms, it doesn't whine, it roars, yet if i'm coming home in the early hours, i can quietly arrive without waking the neighbourhood, like you probly would with the flowmaster. Also it was more cost efficient, and the power gains were noticable, definitly do not omit Magnaflow for you choses.

It's a good feeling hearing "that isn't stock is it?"...Then hearing "that's a sexy exaust note"

Magnaflo is good stuff as well, A nice sounding muffler on the 3.9 is a Hooker Max Flo. they are about $60 at www.summitracing.com :spam: My friend had one on his 3.9 and it sounded so good, not to loud just right.

Agreed, magnaflow is excellent, the perfect blend of everything...which is why i choose it for me! lol The stock dynomax on my truck wasn't bad though so I'm sure a higher end dynomax setup would be even better.

When I first got my Dak, i wanted an exhaust. I orderd a Flowmaster 40 and a Dynomax Bullet race muffler cause the dynomax was like 30 bucks on summitracing.com The dynomax sounds so much better than the flowmaster. It sounded better WITH my stock cat than the Flowmaster 40 sounded with no cat. I gave the flowmaster to my neighbor to put on his blazer. It makes my 3.9 sound so strong, it blows my mind.

I forgot about the race bullit muffler, it is good stuff, i think it would be the only Dynomax muffler i would buy.
