View Full Version : Hemi Plug wires

Ok, so I have noticed that on the 5.7L in the cars, the plug wires are short and run from the coil, to the plug on that same cylinder, but on the Truck motors they run from coilpack to a plug on the other cylinder bank. I am wondering if by converting our truck motors to run the shorter wire if this might help performance a tad bit. It should just involve using the short wires, as I do not think there is a difference in the coils. If nothing else, this would at least save money on plug wire changes, as well as clean up the engine bay some as well. Any thoughts?
Also has anyone found any ignition products for our beloved Hemi yet? The only thing I have seen so far is the Timing Twister from MSD which allows you to make changes to the timing. The reason I am asking is because I am trying to plan out my build in stages, and want to either go to N2O or forced induction ultimately, and feel that I will need ignition upgrades to be able to be safe.

You won't gain any performance from shorty plug wires, as the stock ones are designed as they are to help the flow of and ignition of exhaust gases to the cylinder it's going to. The shorty ones will be slightly off timing, since the spark won't be going to the right cylinder it's supposed to go to. They'll only provide the aesthetic of not having the crossover wires.
If you're wanting to go to nitrous or forced induction, you can't go with shorty wires. Too many guys with forced induction or nitrous have had backfiring or missing problems and can't use the shorty wires. If you're wanting to ditch the crossover wires and get some serious power (i.e. boost or spray), you're going to have to get the 6.1L or new 5.7L coilpacks.
I am sticking with the stock crossover wires. No shorties for me, but I would like to eventually go with 6.1L/new 5.7L valve covers and coilpacks just for the aesthetics when I'm running out of mods to do and wanting to clean up the engine bay more.

I was reading this on DT after I posted this thread. I haven't really made any mods yet. I am think about doing the same cam and valvetrain upgrades that you did, as well as TC, but after that I think I will stick with nitrous for a while before either going to a SC or Turbo setup. I actually think I could do a Turbo setup pretty easy, but that will be a while down the road. I would like to find a set of heads in a Junkyard or Ebay and test my P&P skills on them. I have ported a lot of items on my Subaru in the past, but I'd like to see what I could gain out of them. I am also going to look into intake manifolds, as I think the car manifolds could net some nice gains over the Truck manifold. The only problem here is the alt and a/c compressor location.

I've thought about the manifold options as well, but for the work and look of relocating the alternator and A/C compressor, I don't think it's worth it. My next planned mods are longtube headers if I can get them to fit, the DiabloSport whenever it comes out, and ported heads.
You'll definitely be happy with the cam and the torque converter, that's for sure.
