Hey all! Well, im moving to St. Charles county pretty soon, and just found that I have to do emissions testing there, ugh! I couldn't find exactly what they do besides a visual inspection, and a exhaust anaylizer. Can anyone tell me more specifically what they do?

My truck has candied tail lights (so no white reverse lights) a M1 2bbl, and a very crappy exhaust cutout that is leaking all over the place by the welds. I know that the cut out will need to be fixed (can I still have one, or do I need to get rid of it all together?), but what about the M1 and candied tails? I have had the exhaust anaylized during my time at a tech school, and it passed fine with the M1 on, but do they check for that during a visual? Everything else on the truck is CARB approved, so it shouldn't be an issue.
Thanks!,
Zach

ZachDamn Zach we'll have to meet up man, movin to my neck of the woods :jester: as far as emissions they dont really do shit around here the tails might be a problem but if it is just let me know and we can swap tails while you get it done M1 will be fine the cutout might be a problem and when i got my truck tested they didnt look for anything

for the state inspection they may not like the exhaust cutout, but for the emmisions part all they should do is plug it in under the dash to read computer. I run my trucks thru the emmisions part with the muffler back missing

Sounds good, thanks for the replies guys! I think I'll just buy some exhaust tubing and a welder eventually to fix the exhaust, its an excuse to buy one :).

i just had my tested on the service road off 70 in saint charles, and i have cai and y-pipe with exhaust, and i think i waited in line for 30 mintues and it took them about 1 mintue to do the testing. i really dont think they check for much, just a way to get money out of you, because i was worried about the all mods. i did and i passed fine. You should be ok, but you might want to check your exhaust if it is leaking, that might look bad to them.

ya, im right off muegge road. Im not sure how old you are but we could go to a bar or something. I was thinking about getting my truck lowered do you think that midwest 4x4 off country club could do it without ripping me off, or can you think of any other places around here, because i do not know the first thing about suspension.

i dont know why i said midwest 4x4, i meant first capital 4wd. I got my window's tinted at extreme and i asked the guy how much it would cost to lower it, like 2/4, and all he did was bitch about how hard of a job it is to lower dakota's, so i dont think im going to go to them. im not really sure what would look good, thats why im guessing 2/4 inches. I have custom exhaust so I don't want to drop it so the bottom scrapes, but like I said i do not have the first clue on how to do suspension and what it all includes, I would rather get it done professionally because I dont want to screw it up, with the the wheel alignment and all. Have any of you guys had any work that done around here?? Im not sure how much that kind of service runs, so I dont want to get ripped off.

ill have to drive up there one day and see how much it would run. I went up there about a year and a half ago, to see what type of tonneau covers they had there and they were outrageous in price and were not the kind i wanted. But im hoping they have good prices on suspension work, and hopefully they know how to install headers.

Hard?! What the hell is he used to working on?? bicycles? Dakotas are very EASY to drop! I really wouldn't pay someone to do it...if you have tools, and some basic mechanical skills, (like you know which way to turn a bolt) and you can remember how you took things apart it's quite simple. Also a 2/4 is a good all around drop but how it sits will depend alot on tire size. What kind of kit are you thinking about using? that can change the degree of difficulty quite a bit.

before you drop be sure to look at your suspension clearance with respect to your exhaust pipes....If you want more info on how to do this PM me and I can do a write up for ya. Alignments have to be done by professionals, they take specialized equipment.

I dont want to get ripped off.

Hate to break it to ya...but anytime you pay someone to work on your truck-You're getting ripped off....especially when it comes to modifications.

Well, good news...Looks like I can do the state inspection on my truck myself at work (after taking the test, ugh), so I can pass my tails!

Where ya movin to in St.Chuck Zach?

Right off 94 between page and 70, I cant even think of the crossroad, but its got the white castle and sonic off it.

And yeah, that was me at Best buy, finally I run into (sorta) another Dak-Dur.com member! You were unfortunate enough to see my truck after about 1000 miles of no washing it :(, but dont worry, I washed it at work thismorning!

Here are some pictures of the exhaust system. Im not sure what sort of drop would work the best with the system I have, also Im not sure what type of kit to order and what is all included in a kit; like I said I do not have the first clue about anything with suspension work. I was thinking maybe a 2/4 or 3/5 drop. I have the stock tire size that comes on the 3.9 V6. I think the sticker said P255/65R16 but im not sure what those numbers mean. Any help and/or information you can give on this subject would be appericated.

Interesting.

I live off Jung Station and Arrow Rock Dr.

I'll have to keep an eye out.

My Durango is nothing special...Maroon two-tone
I normally drive a Figi Blue Conquest TSI.
Pretty loud 3" exhaust, RFL BOV bunch of mods.
We also have an '06 Charger, dark blue with silver stripes up and over the top.

Putting 4.10's in the Durango this weekend so I can tow our camper trailer.

First Capitol 4 wheel drive is expensive, but they do good work.
They wanted $750/axle to do my gears.
I'll save over $800 doing it my self, so I got a Super chips and some nice gauges....and a couple new tools. Might get a press if I need to pull the bearing back off the pinion.

ok....I'll try and answer some of your questions here....but it sounds like you need to do some serious reading here in the forums....use the search feature and ask ??'s in the appropriate forum. The regional forums are largely ignored by people who aren't from that area.

The Exhaust clearance you need to look at is where the pipe actually goes over the axle. Dropping 4 inches out back is going to take alot of your suspension travel and you're probably gonna be changing bumpstops so you want to make sure that when you do you're not going to be beating the hell out of your pipes.

There's a number of ways to drop a dak each way has good and bad things about it. For the front you can do a coil drop or control arms and on the back you can do shackle/hanger, Leafs, or blocks...sometimes a combination of things will get you where you want to be.

As for ability can you do a brake job?? change a flat?? use a wrench?? Give an honest evaluation of your capability and we'll be better equipped to help you out.

One thing to consider with a 2/4 drop is tire size. Your stock tires are 29 inches tall and I honestly wouldn't run anything over 28 inches with a drop or you'll risk rubbing. You can get tire sizes here: http://www.discounttire.com/dtcs/infoTireMath.dos
You can also educate yourself as to what the markings and size means here: http://www.discounttire.com/dtcs/infoSidewall.dos
http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tiretech/techpage.jsp?techid=7&currentpage=46
You can learn alot just by reading up.

Any specific questions you have you can PM me or do a search and see if you can find it...or you can ask the question in the appropriate section. Hope this helps a little bit. There is a wealth of knowledge on this site, use it b/4 you make a decision.

Mr know it all here :jester:
he's right about that though. I dropped the front of mine with the drop spring and oirginally had a 2" and then a 3" block. I changed the rear to a drop leaf spring so I could get a little more clearance under the leaf.

man, i tried to read as many forum posts about this subject as i could and i only got to page 6 out of 44. To many different suggestions to make your head spin. It seems like the Hotchkins kit is the best out there, but it is crazy expensive. I looked at the belltech 2/4 drop kit and that seems a little more reasonible. My truck is my daily driver, but i never tow and/or carry anything in the bed, or plan on racing it at a track or anything. I have the stock wheels and it seems if I want to get a bigger size tire that they will fit and not rub, but nothing extreme like 20 or 22's, maybe like up to 18's with the correct wheel size. Thats what im leading towards now, I still want to do a lot more research but I dont want to spend over 500 on suspension, or almost a grand on that hotchkins kit.

they can crack and fall out, then you have a loose axle. The blocks go under the axle and above the leaf spring

I'm not that much farther than you, maybe only 15 minutes. After the meet, we can "try" for another big get together if you'd like. We both know how those usually go though. LOL Maybe we could do it at Creve Couer Park or something. It's right in the middle.

steve,
my brothers went to the fastlane car show and took some pictures of your truck for me, that thing is badass. I love what you did with the engine bay. To bad i couldnt make it, Ive been stuck at work all day now I get to go help my friends move into their new house, so much for an awsome memorial day
