View Full Version : What was your fastest car or cars?
Being most of the guys on this forum are probly younger
(younger being under 40 - or even 50 to me -) I'm just
curious as to how much experience there is out there with
factory hot rods from the Muscle Car era.
I'll kick it off -
fastest was a 66 Street Hemi 4 speed I bought new in 65
for (sob!!) $3600! After a year & 1/2, I hopped it WAY up -
WAY too much of course, being young and dumb.
close 2nd was a 67 SS Camaro 375 hp 396 4 speed that
I hopped up just with bolt ons
distant 3rd was a 70 Challenger RT/SE 440 6 pack 4 speed
that a cam and headers helped some
best sleeper was a 72 3/4t 4x4 that I swapped in the 440 6 pack
out of the Challenger in front of a hemi torqueflite. Very nearly
as quick as my buddy's fast 340 Duster

ahh!!!!!I would love to have any of thoses!!!!! The dak is my first car (well truck) but the fastest car I have driven would be my brothers eclipse gsx on low boost (high boost and race gass is 11.5@125 so it isn't the typical rice car)
It would run 12 on low boost though.
Do you have any pictures of the rides? you have owned many of my dream muscle cars!

The fastest vehicle I have been in was my dads 76' ford maverick, 351 windsor with about 500 HP, she was a beast.

Wow nice set of cars you had there! Could only wish to own one of those one day.
Quickest car I ever had was kind of an oddball. It was a 74 Buick Regal that I build up a Buick 350 motor in. Was nothing too insane, but it hauled ass for a 4k lb car. My 2nd fastest, although still nothing too fast, was an 86 Old 442. Thing was in mint shape, until I sold it after I got married and we bought a house. Funny how after all the years of building and working on cars, the Durango is the first one I ever brought to a track!
pics below, as well as my most fun car, the $75 4 Door 71 Chevelle I had with the straight 6!

AWD was fun!
Some neat cars - and fast too.
With the modern technology, I'll bet some of those could easily
have walked my hemi when it was stock. And I've seen dyno
sheets on late model mod'd Cobras that would probly have taken
the hemi after I made it into a Dick Landy SS/A clone plus a
tall pro-stock inline type intake and gear drive. I actually talked
to Dick Landy when he was doing his Mopar performance tours
back in the late 60's, he said my combo should be putting out
around 600 hp and close to that in torque. Fastest thing between
gas stations! :-( His SS/A hemi road runner was turning low 10's
at the time.
Yeah, I've got pics (unfortunately that's all!)
I'll scan and post. Plus some of my other less notable
cars such as the 64 Ford Galaxie 500 XL 390, the
67 SS 327/275hp El Camino, the 68 Nova 350 SS.
For you Ford folks, I've now got an 89 Lincoln Mark VII LSC
with a warmed up 351 Lightning - Ebrock heads, GT40 intake,
Trick Flow Stage 1 with 1.72 RR's, heads/full exhaust, beefed
AOD w/mild stall (beefed 4R70W with Baumann TCS and 2800
TCI Stallion sitting on my garage floor). Doesn't run bad for
a 4,000 lb car with 3:55's that gets 22+mpg on midgrade on
the freeway. In a few years when I retire it's going to turn
into a 393 and will go into my restomodd'd 70 Stang convert. :-)
Never too old for hot rods!

Fastest for me was my 95 CBR900RR. Built motor and the usual stuff. At tht time it pulled an excellent 132 hp on the dyno. That's nothing anymore though. I had it up to 178 mph before I ran out of road and balls.
Next was my 73 340 cuda. Great car ran 13 flat on snow tires with super stiff air shocks. Launched a piston thru the block.
Then a 76 camaro with a 1 piece 70 Z28 fiberglass front end with a L88 hood scoop. Built 355. Sold it before I finished it up.
Next was a lowered full size 82 blazer with a built 406. Truck only had 2.73 gears and would do a speedo indicated 150 mph. It was very scary though. Note- don't lower a full size chevy with s10 springs.
92 civic hb with a 1.5 vtec. Usual boltons for the motor and suspension. The car wasn't quick, but it would get 35 mpg at 120 mph. It handled and shifted like a dream though. I could eat up my buddies 85 Vette with it. As long as there wasn't any long straight aways between the curves.
Now the Dak. I'm still not sure which direction I'm going with this yet. It's my daily driver, but the coolest part is that there are som many option available. Also, there aren't any other ones done up around me.

my two fastest were a 68' javelin 343 go package. and a 68' chevelle ss 396 that someone stuffed a 427 in. that was one wicked fast car. had so much torque it snapped the frame behind the rear axle. and i still have the heads and intake from the 427! big valves in there. 2.19 in 1.83 ex. and the carbs from both the 343 and 427.
More neat stuff! Those javelin's were sleepers - nobody expected
an AMC to be fast but many were. And I've always liked the 427 -
just seemed to rev faster than the longer stroke 454's, acted kind
of like a really big small block.
About the bike - it's amazing how fast a powerful bike can be.
I recently saw a video on streetfire where a mod'd bike (I think he
said like 175 hp on the dyno) absolutely whipped a 700 rwhp Z06 Vette,
not even a race. Guy was even doing a long wheely at way over 100
as he left the Vette FAR in the sunset from a rolling 70 mph punch.
And there's a video also on there about a turbo'd Hyabusa - variable up
to 18 lbs boost! Guy had a helmet cam on and the SPEEDO wound up
nearly as fast as you'd expect the TACH to - from 100 up to 180
when he let off on it just didn't take no time at ALL. Totally awesome.
The fastest vehicle I have been in was my dads 76' ford maverick, 351 windsor with about 500 HP, she was a beast.
I'll bet! Hell of a power to weight ratio and that's where it's all at.
And about the ultimate sleeper to boot - and that's what I always
enjoyed about my plain jane 2 door Belvedere Plymouth hemi with no
emblems.

VERY respectable! Probly quicker than my hemi AFTER
I spent $3000 on it in 1968 dollars!
I keep telling people that, built similarly, stroker 5.0's are
usually quicker than 351's mainly cuz of the lighter
reciprocating assy. I'd of gone that route in my Mk7
except I want to eventually go 393.
You've obviously got more than just the giggle gas -

I raced many a big block out at Memphis Motorsports, and I'll tell ya first hand that I always had em out of the hole. That car left hard! (see video). But if they were spraying a big one, they could catch me by the 1/8 lol. Usually the ones running D/R class, we're cutting 1.4 60's. Fastest 60 i ever cut was a 1.60 and that was on the bumber.

i dont think they mean top speed, if thay do, excuse this post. i think what they are getting at is 1/4 mile maybe? lol for me, its the truck i got now. 318, reg cab, short bed, with the new aeroturbine exhaust i just put on. seems to really pick up real nicely. will be even better if i can gain some coin enough to get my trans worked and have a slightly higher stall. maybe even put 3.92's in the back.
my ram wasnt too bad for what it was, but the teal one, forget it. still had better pep than that red 74 360 charger i had (that thing was beat to the gills). my black 96 dakota 3.9 was pretty peppy (for a 6), never raced it though. never even had a chance to really modify it. dad died, and i got his ram. so i paid off my 96 and gave it to my sister (bad move), and jumped in his truck. shoulda kept mine, and sold his, bought a house and all, then i would have been ok, and on my own already.

All those posts (and I can't believe the response - I thought I'd only get a few
old guys like myself that grew up in the muscle car era!) just bring out one very
good, valid point - there's lots of definitions for "fast" -
There's 1/4 fast, maybe better defined as quick
There's in-town stoplite to stoplite fast
There's on-the-road daily driver fast
and there's top end fast
My 67 Camaro SS 375hp 396 4 speed, 3:73's, with some bolt ons,
got absolutely whipped in a 1 block stoplite drag by a dead stock
335hp 383 roadrunner automatic - with 4:88's! 2 blocks would have
been a different story, but he was doing his thing with a perfect
setup for where he was doing it. VERY low expenditure, only the
4:88's on a totally stock low buck roadrunner, built for 1 block at
a time.
With that same Camaro, which actually was pretty quick for it's day,
I had a heck of a tussle with a big old Riveria GS - the 425 nail head
block with the factory option 2x4's. Little old dried up fart with an
English cap, just grinning from ear to ear when he stuck right with me
from a stoplite up to nearly 50. Couldn't believe it.
The Camaro was pretty bad up to around 100 or so, would be pretty
far ahead of my hemi (when it was stock with 3:54's) at 60, but that
disappeared by about 100 and then the hemi ran and hid from it.
One day I came across a 67 GTO that turned out to have a dual quad
421 SD in it with about the same gears as I had. From 40 to 110 I only
pulled him about 3 feet, and on top end I wasn't gaining on him but he
was about 1/2 block behind. He thought I was a 383, I thought he was
a 389. HECK of a fun race!
The hemi was brutal from 40 to top end, but not much off the line with 3:54's
and only 7" tires. But with a real sharp/fresh tune it would pull an honest
7200 in 4th, at least per my Sun tach. With 29-1.2" dia tires (9:50x15's) - well,
figure it out. Lots of people don't believe me that a factory pure stock car
would run that fast. Took a while to go from 150 up, but it would.
After I (over) built it with 12-1/2 compression, the factory jetted SS dual 725's
on an inline tall pro-stock style intake, cam gear drive, big cam for it's day,
fully blueprinted, Hooker headers and dual 3" exhaust, aluminum flywheel, 3800 lb clutch,
4:10's and 10" tires which it would absolutely roast off just from a 2000
rpm punch, no clutch, in low, well - heh heh heh - nothing in 68 in my neck of
the woods ever saw the front end in the rear view. Most of the time it wasn't
that radically built, but was still pretty much king of the hill in my area.
I should have left it at 11-1 compression, and the factory SS regular dual
quad intake - nothing still would have touched it in 68 in my area, and then
I could have still had a daily driver.
Probly just as much fun from a sleeper persepctive was when I took the
440 6 pack out of my 70 Challenger, put a decent cam
(that really woke it up) and headers on it, built a hemi torqueflite,
and put it in my 72 3/4t 4x4 work truck. Nobody had fast trucks in
those days. And it was darn near as quick as my buddy's real quick
340 Duster with 4:56's. Blew off a real nice Camaro 350 SS 4 speed
one day, stoplite to 70 over 4 lengths. Pretty near felt
sorry for him after I saw the look on his face! But not quite. :-)
My 70 Challenger 440 6 pack was kind of a disappointment. So many
"experts" claimed that motor was as fast on the street as the hemi
well, not my 440 versus my stock hemi by along shot. Just didn't have
enuf cam, mostly. A buddy had a 335 hp (rated) 428 CJ 69 Mustang
Mach 1 with 3.90 gears and 4 speed (Challenger had 4:10's) that would
eat me alive both from a standing start and a rolling start. Course,
his was real quick for his class, he always trophied in street stock class.
Ah, the good old days!
I'll have pics up pretty soon of the hemi, the Camaro, and the Challenger.
top end wise, it had to be a ford escort. drove the shit out of it to the races. both me and my cousin hate fords, but where supriced how high i was able to get the speed up to. lol
Yeah, with the modern technology, it's downright amazing how fast some
of the small cars can be. Really, they're something like a high revving
big motorcycle engine only pulling a little more weight.
Wish we'd of had that kind of efi and cam design & valve train technology
back in the 60's!
Now it's not uncommon to get 100 hp more (or even way more) out of
a small block than I got out of the hemi after I built it up so I couldn't
hardly drive it on the street.
Well, probly woulda just killed myself anyway - young and inexperienced
and thought I could lick the world.

Fastest car I've ever owned would have to be the wife's Audi A6 twin turbo. Yeah it's only about 230hp at the wheels, the limiter is supposed to be 127 mph (yeah right), but it will pull like crazy. Fastest I've ever been in, old neighbor had a built 67 Camaro RS/SS/Z28 (qite a rare package), he had bought it and built it. Late night hual ass drive buried the speedo at 110 and was still pulling. Actaully the fastest I've ever been in was last summer, Lambo Gallardo, fellow Audi owner has one, took me for 1 hr 130 mile spin. Twice hit 160 mph on the interstate.
Actaully the fastest I've ever been in was last summer, Lambo Gallardo, fellow Audi owner has one, took me for 1 hr 130 mile spin. Twice hit 160 mph on the interstate.
Yeah, those Gallardo's are a whole nother show. I've seen on streetfire where some of those exotics will hit over 300 kmh, not far off of 200 or so.
Course, I saw a much modified twin turbo Viper daily driver hit something like
lo 9's I think in the 1/4.
All those kinds of cars are if you have WAY too much money.
I'm just interested in the REAL world that WE live in. :-)
.Oh and by the way,the trans am,the nova and the camaro ALL YELLOW.I've been stuck on that stupid color since day one.
Man after my own heart! Both my Hemi and my Challenger were yellow.
Pics next (I think)
Well, here's some pics.
KEEP IN MIND that's nearly 40 years ago!
The Camaro and Challenger looked like that most of the time.
The Hemi only got the hood scoop toward the very end -
most of the time it was pretty plain jane looking, lots of
the time only black steelies or chrome reverse. SLEEPER!! :-))
The Hemi was a 66 Belvedere II 4 speed. $3600 brand new (sob!)
Just had turned 19. Stock most of the time I had it. Later, had
various stages of upgrades, wildest was a Dick Landy SS/A Hemi Roadrunner
low 10's motor clone, plus a pro-stock tall inline dual quad thru the hood
and cam gear drive (after I put the motor in the Challenger)
In this pic, it had the factory SS modified plenum dual quad intake
which I shoulda left alone.
The Challenger was a 70 RT/SE 440 6 pack 4 speed 4:10's (another sob!)
Stock while the 440 was in the car. At the last had the Hemi in it.
Bought it while in the Army.
The Camaro was a 67 SS 396 375 hp 4 speed 3:73's to which I added
an L88 intake, 3bbl (not a misprint!) 950 Holley and headers. (a 3rd sob!)
Got it used very lo miles, drove it while I had the hemi built.
And these were just my 3 favorites and the fastest.
How can ANYBODY be so STUPID as to just get rid of them!?

It was purchased brand new in 72 by my great grandmother, my dad ran it our of gas when he borrowed it after school (his 12 grade year).
Fun car, great history and memories... maybe someday when it is fully restored it will be a bit modded like cars were in the time period.
here are some pics I took of it to show the custom porthole windows and trunk lid that my great grandmother had installed when she got the car to make it look more like a lincoin, she wanted one but it wouldnt' fit in her garage so she got the cougar... in yellow to match the house :onethumb:

My Celica. It's certainly not V8 muscle car fast, but it scoots pretty good for a 4 banger. My mom had a Trans-Am, just like the one in Smokey and The Bandit, it was supposed to be mine when I got in high school, but she needed money and sold it to a black guy that totalled it the same day.

My dad had a 75 Charger SE ( Dodge version of the Chrysler Cordoba) It had a 400ci auto in it and would go like a bastard on the highway. No bottom end though. The colour was awfull (Sienna Beige with a dark green half Landau top and matching interior). I got it when he died in 82. I had it repainted 2 tone green ( actually looked really good! pics are gone now sorry) drove the living shit out of it till the motor gave up. Buddy of mine wrecked his 70 Challenger so I bought the engine (383 punched 60 over. Head work done, Edelbrock Tarantula intake and a holley 650 double pumper.) 727 tranny (shift kit, stall converter don`t remember what rating) and the 8 3/4 rearend with 3:91`s. Put all of it in the Charger along with some very big Cragar rims with BFG`s that were on the Challenger. Car looked great and was very fast for something the was over 4000 lbs

My 69 RS/SS Camaro. 3.73's 350 punched out 60 over, 400 crank, stock GM 375HP cam, HEI and Holley 780 double pumper. The first pic's are when I first picked it up in 86 the guy liked the drag look but I think anyone can build a car to go fast straight (He had the back seat out carpeted up all the way with a fire extinguisher mounted in the center and plastic racing buckets in it). Now it is set up for road racing (lowest point is 1/2" off the ground) but is on jack stands :( . I need to get out in the garage and get it back together. Its been setting since around 90. And I have a rebuilt rock crusher setting on the floor to put back in it. Fastest I had it to was 160 and ran out of road. It was still climbing.

My fastest was a 68' Plymouth GTX with a 440. Bought it from my dad and drove it for about 3 yrs. Turned in the 13's in the 1/4 with stock tires and engine. Then I got into trucks and 4X4's and sold it back to my dad for $1,300 in 1972. And it's been trucks ever since.
