View Full Version : Seafoam, engine cleaner question

After a week at the dealership I finally have the 2000 back.
Seems all of the problems culminated from the plenum gasket. Service contract took care of all of it for $100 bucks.
Then came the next line of bullshit.
The tech tells the service writer that the intake and valley were covered in baked on oil. Apparently the previous owner didn't change oil frequently enough. 107,000 miles now.
The tech states that after completing the intake repairs the oil light is coming on. It must be the strainer stopped up on the oil pump. Now we need a new short block most likely. :cussing:
My first question was how much oil pressure is the guage showing? He did not know.
Well I picked up the truck, no oil light on and the oil pressure is fine.
However, I would like to run some form of cleaner through the oil system to clean things up some.
Old days we poured in trans fluid to clean. I have seen some comments on Seafoam, any one else have tried and true comments to share?
Thanks

go to your local parts store and buy a can of "engine flush". thats litterally the name on the can.
you dump it in the oil and let the motor idle for about 15 minutes...... then drain and put on your new filter and fill it with fresh oil.

I've used 1 can since I bought the truck 1 1/2 years ago...and if the amout of smoke is a sign of the crap it's cleaning out then it does a great job. It can be put straight into the TB......in the oil and in the gas, just follow the directions on the can. I know your supposed to use 1/3 of the can if you pour in into the TB or vacuum line, and the whole can said it will treat a certain amount of gas. No idea about the oil but I think your supposed to change the oil not long after you put it in
If I was you I would give it a shot, you can't really make it any worse if the tech says it needs a new block :jester:

I like to grab the throttle cable and rev the engine while I'm pouring it in. The engine usually cuts out before I can get more than 1/3 -1/2 of a can in it.
I Let it sit for at least 10-20 minutes before I go to start it again. After too long I think it seeps past the rings and into your oil when you pour it down the TB so unless your thinking about an oil change in the near future I might not want to let it soak too long.
It takes a couple of cranks to get it started again then just stand back and watch the smoke show. :onethumb:
Speaking of which I probally need to get some here since my durango doesnt seem to be quite as peppy as it should be as of late and with all the cold starts this winter so far I wouldnt be suprised that there is some build up occuring.

I`v been using this for over 25 years in all my car`s and truck`s. It`s cheap work`s great and you can get it at Wal Mart

You pour it in real slow with reving it a little bit......bassically just enough to open the butterfly valves. After you get about 1/3 of the can in shut off the truck and let it sit for like 10-15 mins. Then start it again and watch the smoke poor out :jester:

I always buy 2 cans of it before tune-up time. I use the vacum line to suck it up through the TB. I pour some into the oil, and then some in the fuel tank. I do this with a full tank of gas. Once I get on "E" I change my oil, plugs etc....She runs great after!!

hey so if i pour this whole can into my gas tank will it be just as effective as if i poured it in through the TB?

alright so reading this can it sounds like the best way to go is throttle bottle and maybe another one in the gas later but the TB is the best way to go

No...putting it in the gas apparently will work differently than pouring it in the TB
Buy a can and read the back of it...it explains alot

Just another dumb question, Just exactly what does Seafoam do?
its secret magic is contributed to tiny microsuperduperscopic dancing bannanas :banana2: that meticilously scrub (with tiny scrubbers) the inside of your TB and intake manafold and drop the crud into the cilinders where it gets burned up once you turn the ignition on.
unfortuneatly the tiny banannas get sucked down in the cylinders when you start and the :banana2: get incenerated also and thats what produces the thick grey smoke cloud...burnt little :banana2:
:)
OK I need to go to sleep
seriously it loosens up the oil and carbon build-up that comes though from your oil breather (the peice of hose that leads from your valve cover to your airhat)
you can delete the hose and simply place a breather cap on top of your valve cover (the old school way) if you don't like the idea of oil vapors being recycled through your TB, but part of the reason it hooks upstream of your TB is that it creates a vacume to draw the vapors out :blahblah: emmissions equipment :blahblah: may affect your :blahblah: sensor and :blahblah: throw a code.
* forgive mey speling :)

Be careful pouring it down the throttle body, remember it is a liquid and can hydrolock if done too fast.

what about if i do the approach i am seeing alot of and just dip the breather tube in it and let the breather tube pull it in

hmmmmmmm so i poured about 1/3-1/2 of a can of this stuff straight into the TB while slightly revving it and then i let it sit for 13 minutes then cranked it and revved slightly and i got a teeny tiny puff of smoke right off the bat then nothing else....i guess i'll try again later and with a different approach

I ended up using the vacuum line that is connected to the brake booster line on my 4.7 and used that to suck in approximately 3/4 of a can and then shut the truck off and let it sit for 10mins. My truck only has 43000 on it and I produced such a smoke show that traffic was 300ft behind me until it cleared up. :onethumb:
Using the vacuum line is a little more direct to the intake manifold where the Seafoam can do it's magic on the built up crap in there.
