I went back to the neighborhood junk yard again today and picked up a few more items for the 1987 Dakota. Here is what I scored.

Emissions pump with the two valves, fan belt.
Gauge panel with the oil and temp, and trip meter.
O2 sensors,
22 gallon fuel tank (they pull it Monday for me)
Taillight wiring harness for both taillights

My emission pump went out a while back so I picked up another with the valves. I'm hoping that my mileage will improve with everything hooked up and running. The last pump started making an awful squealing sound so I took the belt off. Seems like mileage has suffered since them.

The gauges were a good deal. I like having some type of needle instead of a light saying "I'm red and you have a problem". Now I can see any fluctuations occuring before it quits. I also like having a trip meter. Now I just have to wait about 5000 miles to make the swap. My '87 has 208,800 miles and the new gauge panel shows just over 213,000.

Taillight harness was an added bonus. I was hoping to get two pigtales and splice them in later. Got under the truck and just unplugged the harness and got it all. Water got in my old taillights and rusted and ruined the old back-up bulbs and sockets. The were severly rusted and unusable.

Fuel tank was a great find since it will increase my range and keep my fill-ups to at least every other day if not longer. I've always thought a 15 gallon tank was too small. The 22 will give me a little more range.

Today was a great day. I can't wait to get my car rolling again so I can move on to the next phase of the '87 build-up. Bodylift, tires, wheels are next but I need to locate some better gears. The 2:94's are not going to cut it. 3:55's might make everything managable with 32" tires. At least that it what the gear calculators say.

If you go with 32" tires, get either 4.10 or at least 3.91 gears. You'll be happy you did.

Dakman,

I'd say you are right on the gear choice. I was hoping to be able to find a Dakota that would have the gears I need and according to my info, the 87-90 Daks only came with 2:94 or 3:55 gears. The Gen II have 3:92 but they went to 6 lugs in '91. I really don't want to change out my wheels and hubs and was doing some wishful thinking with the 3:55's.

Thanks,

Ed

Actually some of the Gen1 came with 3.90's I know all of the Shelby had 3.90 SG.

Do you know if this ratio was offered in any 4x4's so I can nab the front and rear diffs with the same ratio?
