I recently bought a 97 Dakota 5.2L sport 4X4 so anyway i went to pop the hood one day and saw that there was a computer port right next to the hood lever uncovered... Is this the way its supose to be? What in gods name plugs into this port?

That is your standard OBDII diagnostic interface connector. It is used with a scantool to read trouble codes, etc. That is the standard location for almost all OBDII vehicles. Perfectly normal.

You can get a cheap scanner for $50 or so. Only lets you read codes but not reset them or see real time data. A decent scan tool will be $200-300. You can also find good deals on ebay. Just search for OBDII. I got mine a couple years ago, scans OBD and OBDII.
