IF you have an extended cab then you already have an enclosed space to store valuables out of the elements. If it's not a work truck that carries tools and other stuff on a regular basis I wouldn't go for a cap or hard tonneau. Go for a soft tonneau to stay flexible in the bed area. When you need it put it on, when you don't need it just roll it up against the cab.

i got an r/t club cab and i started out with a wsoft cover and hated the look on my truck plus with a stereo going in the rear seat area i aitn got the storage so i wentwit ha hard cover i like it a lot better plus doesnt give it that offroad look which im def not going for.
hard cover is the only way to go! paint it to match your truck and baby it gives a heck of a look to your truck!
Plus they can be taken off in about ten minutes if need be.

i have the extang black soft one on my truck. and i love it. roll it up when needed. and it has 2 adjustments. hi for fuel economy and low for perforance look. i wouldnt go for the hard cover as i have heard that they have scratched the rear of cabs from the bed wobbling. and the hinges break. then you have a cover that goes down but shifts. the soft requires very little maint. and looks great with armor all after a nice wash.

I would go with a Hard Top painted to match as mentioned earlier. But since you said low profile. Go with the Checker Product's FX tops. Looks awesome when painted to match, very low profile so it wont scratch the cab :biggthump

If you need to use the bed for bigger things......even if it's only once in awhile, go with a soft top.
But if your like me and never put anything back there big enough to worry about, get a hard top. I LOVE hard top tonneau covers, I've had both and I absolutely hated the soft top.

i use the bed alot since i'm the only one in the family with a truck, so i'll probally get a soft tonneau, do the low profile soft ones look good and do the roll up as esaily as the regular soft tonneau

Get one of the Truxedo Lo-Pro's. Those are very nice. They have bars that go across but they roll right up with the cover when you need the bed space. Plus, there isnt any damn buttons to snap, its all very stong velcro. Simple to open/close, takes less than 2 mins.
I have fiberglass painted to match. Looks pretty sharp. I use my bed all the time and rigged a hoist in the garage to remove/install/store up in the ceiling.
If you use the bed a lot, soft is probably most convenient though.

Checkmate hard cover all the way. I got the quick release hinges. I can take it off in less than a minute.

I would have bought the extang RT were it not for it being out of my budget at the moment...thats a low profile cover that does a similar thing to the checkmate hardcover, in that it doesn't go above the top of the bed..
Its also a question of cost as well...hard tops do look awesome plus I've seen some on here with really decent lip-spoilers too, but they do get pricey...soft tops tend to be cheaper, this is from what i have seen so far...
