I was looking around the newest JC Whitney catalog the other day and ran into a neat little beast. It is a finned aluminum piece that fits around an oil filter and dissipates heat like a heat sink. It advertises that it can reduce oil temperature by 13%. Has anyone tried one of these for their Dakota/Durango?

Oil cooler (http://www.jcwhitney.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?catalogId=10101&storeId=10101&langId=-1&productId=221193&mediaCode=ZX&appId=384264)

Thanks.

although it might catch a small amount of air, i don't think that it would do any good because of where the oil filter is located. but mine is probably different because i've got the 5.9, and the filter is tilting to the side, right by the header/exhaust manifold.

I talked to the guys at fram and they said that if you really want to get cooler oil, put an in-line oil cooler on the engine and add 1/2 qt of oil to your system. The position of the filter on the 4.7 is prohibitive for any benefit from a wrap around. In short, use the wrap around for a $8 paper weight, because that is all it is good for (kinda like those vortex TB spacers).
Addtionally, you only really need a oil cooler for towing applications.

With all the problems of sludge from the cool-running 4.7L, I'll pass.

i know with my 5.9 with the pace setter headers theres not room to wrap anything around my filter.. its so close to the header it worries me... i was actually wondering about a remote mount filter set up... anyone seen any?

I’m looking into purchasing the Amsoil duel remote filter set up that they have. It looks very well built and allows you to extend times between oil changes when used with their oil or the Royal Purple oil. It’s pricey but looks to be well built.
