Storms smack southern Wisconsin with monster hail
Associated Press
MADISON, Wis. - Hail big enough to smash a car's windshield battered southern Wisconsin Thursday night, leaving some lawns covered with balls of ice as the storms swept eastward.
"I haven't seen hail this big in several years," said Dane County Sheriff's Lt. Mark Twombly.
He said one of the county's patrol cars had its windshield smashed as a detective drove it, but he hadn't heard of any other vehicles getting the windshields knocked out.
The largest hail specimen had a diameter of 4.25 inches and was found in Jefferson County, located between Madison and Milwaukee, said Darrin Hansing, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service.
Big hail also fell in the state's southwestern counties. The weather service said the reports included 2.5-inch hail in Dodgeville and 2.75-inch hail in Iowa County.
In the Madison vicinity, trained weather spotters reported hail up to 2 inches in diameter in Madison and 3-inch hail in nearby Monona and Cottage Grove.
The storms triggered severe weather warnings across the southern region of the state and produced downpours of rain in addition to the hail.
The forecast showed skies turning partly cloudy Friday with highs in the 60s in the far north and the 70s elsewhere, but cooler near the Great Lakes.
