Let's see what the most common intake is.
Post your Pros and Cons of your Air Intakes to. This way it may help out some of the guys that can't decide which one they want.

Not a common problem but can happen with any place. Just go to a loacl auto store and get the hose from there it should be like 1-2 $ . If u want, u can send it back to joe and he'll get a longer one to you. Joes #1 thing is customer satisfaction!!

before i had my "home brew" i had a mopar intake witch is exactly like the K&n fipk. i had that on my truck and it cracked, i tried to repair it, but it didnt work. so i built one out of 4" and 5 1/2" aluminum tubing, welded them together to fit where the fipk went, blew some paint on and thats it. very simple, but it works.

Oh I already took care of it, got a 5/8" hose from my Murrays Autoparts around here, they didnt even charge me for one foot of tube so it was nothing. It wouldnt have been anything if I had to pay 1-2 bucks either, I was just curious though..Thanks for the info anyway, appreciate it...I am very satisfied with the intake, glad to know Joe is willing to do what it takes to satisfy us...Take care!

can I vote twice for the Fipk? I have one on my 5.9 Grand Cherokee and one on my Dak r/t. I love them best quality IMO
They install very easily, are a high quality plastic- Not metal so they dont heat up the air charge, And have sealed baffle to isolate the filter element form the engine air.

Just finished up my "ABS" performance intake hehe... it works great. Have noticed a nice difference in my bottom end torque and mid range power. The roar at WOT is cool too!! $5 3"-3" rubber coupler, $8.50 5'x3" ABS pipe(only used 1 foot) $3x2 3'ODx3"ID 90 degree elbows $2 3" toilet bowl flange(bolted the cone filter to this) $10 ABS cleaner and cement $25 AutoZone cone filter and $10 for the breater filter. Oh and $.98 for silver paint. took all of an hour to remove the stock airbox and build and install the intake. Did the homebrew cause Im planning on a shaker hood later.

I got my 360 the other day. Put it in yesterday. My hose did not fit but I cut it and stuck a hard plastic pipe in to make it longer. I had a real hard time with the heard shield fitting due to interference with the AC condenser. I had to make some cuts in it to fit around it. Had trouble with the filter fit due to the cruse control cables. I got it all in it seems to be working but I don’t really notice much difference yet. All and All I wish I would have sent it back. :(

Ted...
I have to say, installing my 360inakez was less than perfect, but for $140 I was willing to bend a little metal. The AC line was rubbing a bit, but a tug and a push, plus some foam tape, everything cleared just fine. The Cruise plunger was a bit in the way, but again, the bracket is just steel, and it bends with little effort. You could go with the drop in filter, but then no growl and too stock looking. Check mine out at http://home.nycap.rr.com/danskota/index.html
Go to the accessories page. Some of the links are broken...trying to fit too much on my free 10meg homepage.
FYI the rubber tube from the PCV system fit up just fine on my '02 4.7, but they do tell you on the web site that you may have a different setup. Just plumb your way to the 360, or put a breather on the factory hose, and plug up the 360 hole.
Last note...
Love the sound and the power gain. Not much extra off the line, but when she catches her wind, its crazy gain in HP! My opinion is that this engine likes to rev, and if you want to really smoke the tread off the line, you need to mod the rear gear to 4.10 or better and maybe play with the torque converter. 3.55 is fine for highway, but not a tow/track gear!

got and installed the 360 today...not bad only glitch I had was that I had to turn the horn that was mounted forward of the stock air box about 200 degrees for the front of the filter to drop in just right. Other than that it was a sucessful install under 30 minutes (that doesn't count searching for a frigging screwdriver for 10 minutes :hammer: )
Its not quite as sexy looking as I would have thought it would be. Having a powder coated air hat to match the tube would be dead sexy, but it sure is a hell of alot sexier than the stock box.
the sucking sound you get when you hit it kinda took my wife by suprise, but she loves the throttle response though.
Haven't taken it on the highway yet to see how it does at speed, but damn in town it rocks :mullet:

I ordered the ProZen intake on Ebay, and it looks sweet. It's for my 2004 Hemi durango. Despite what some people may have heard, I got my part in 3 days, and it looks great. I swear I can tell the difference, but I'm dynoing it this week and we'll see what happens.

Technically, mine's home-brewed. I have a 94 3.9 Dak and it had a piece of plastic snapped into the hole that the hose fits into that takes the air to the filter. I popped it out and popped the hose into the slot and added a K&N filter into the stock air hat. I cna hear it suckin in LOTS more air. Does anyone else have this plastic piece blocking air?

I had the problem too with the hose not reaching on the 360, I bought extra length hose from Kragen. However, a couple days later I inspected the intake and to my dismay I noticed it doesn't seal properly between the throttle body and the new 3" airhat. That sorta put me into a small rage. Looking at it now, I think I might have just went for the K&N drop in instead. After being spoiled playing with imports where for the most part fit and finish is perfect (for good things ala hks, greddy/trust, etc), this sorta threw me off. I dunno... the power gain was noticeable in midrange though, felt like the powerband was more linear.

I changed the poll around to include some more options - unfortunately it appears like the poll won't allow people to change their votes if the option wasn't there before. Because they were also re-arranged it may show that you voted for a different model than you have - the numbers were shifted along with the answer so the numbers will still be accurate.

I had an Intense Performance Stage II but i took it off. I don't like the filtering capabilities of the K&N and other similar filters. I found that I had finer dirt particles coming in through the filter. I am trying to keep my trucks for a long while so I put the stock box back on. However, for the sake of a more smoother air flow, I took off the intake snorkel off of the front of the air filter box. This is a 4.7 liter motor. The deep breathing sound came back as when I put my foot in it. Same airbox, better breathing however slight, without the front little snorkel. It opened up a 3" diameter opening. The same as my IP.

Since only 3 people posted pics :redx: I will post mine. It is an ebay set-up but could easily be done with the right inake pipes from various auto stores. I purchased this for 80 bucks shipped and it included a 40 dollar K&N filter. So I am not complaining. What do you think? :banana2: Includes matching couplings to go with body color and it sounds MEAN. :drive:
Oh and I voted "Homemade Air Intake" because I could have done it, someone just beat me to it and sold them on ebay under the name "inake_power".

what intake option should i go with? i removed the flap which has to increase airflow, but should i go with a k&n filter and air-hat, or just go with the 14" k&n air-cleaner? which option would get me the best HP? i think my stock setup with the flap gone, and k&n filters and air hat would be best since its sucking in cold air from outside the engine, compared to a round one that can only suck in hot engine air. let me know guys..

It varries I stuck with a Ram air intake since it gets cold up hear. If your at a place that don't get cold I would get a Cold air intake. Ram air should back more power because there not that many tubes to feed the air to the engine. What I heard the shorter it is the better air flow it with get.

I am really thinking about putting a Mopar Oea intake on my truck. But i have issues with that. My brain tells me that you would be getting more air but it wouldnt be cold, hot air rises, so my question would be which is better, a cai or a air hat?

I have the AEM Brute Force kit with a Dryflow filter. It's far from cold air but sucks in plenty of volume and makes an interesting sound.

K&N FIPK 57-1716. LOVING IT! MAgnaflow exhaust sounds deeper and louder and the intake roar is awesome. I heard some trash-talking about the K&N filter's filtering abilities on the net right after I bought it so I ordered an AEM dryflow and put it on to see if I liked it better. I lost that distinctive K&N intake roar and my idle dropped 200 rpms. The K&N filter is back on, the AEM is sitting in the garage for use as a spare. I've never heard of a major engine problem caused by the K&N that wasn't attributable to user-error such as over-oiling so I'm sticking with it.

mine's stock with the snork I think it's the best set up out there! after all paper filters do filter the best and the snork pulls cold air from the fenderwell that's devoid of any water that can enter my engine (unlike those cone filters) and why would dodge go to such legenth to design an airbox with a snorkel that pulls from the fenderwell? and that little metal plate with an X on it that protects the fenderwell from water that could be splashed up from underneath. whoever designed it know what they where doing.
I just got rid of the resonator box and replaced it with an homemade abs pipe system so I could hear the engine better, I noticed no preformance increse.

They don't sell air intakes anymore - the powder coating side of their shop got really busy over the years, the profit vs. labor ratio is much higher than it was to build air intakes by hand. You can contact them at www.vegaspowdercoating.com but odds are they'll say no, especially if they have some big casino/convention projects going.

I had to make a longer threaded rod to fit the filter, otherwise it dropped right in and Edelbrock air cleaners allow you to use the stock breather hose w/o interference of the throttle cable.

Wow, this thread is old, but since people have been posting recently, I'll add in my take on intakes since I've used a few different types.
Started out with a QuickD CAI. Used a metal tube with a K&N cone filter and the stock airhat. Worked great for the price and didn't look too bad. Was less than $100. This was back in 2000. But I did add the CAI and 52mm QuickD(Fastman) throttle body at the same time. I ran this sset up for a few years and a few different mods.
Replaced the QuickD intake with a used K&N FIPK I scored from Scott Q for $75. This was pre-GiSM era. Worked a lot better than the QuickD metal tube with the stock airhat. The stock aairhat presents it's own restrictions. The K&N tube is one of the better flowing tubes available according the Bruce from F&B. Ran this for a couplee yrear, then replaced the filter that comes with the kit with a larger 9" long Spectre filter. Can't really say I noticed any difference, but it looked better because it was blue.

http://media2.dropshots.com/photos/122277/20061201/b_162146.jpg
Now I'm in my current configuration. I traded my F&N FIPK as seen in the above picture for a K&N open element with Exstream lid. Can't really say I noticed a huge performance difference because the FIPK flows more then enough for 95% of the people using them, including me. Only reason I switched was for looks alone. The open element just looks so much better on the 5.9L. Less clutter under the hood. Now the only real difference i did notice is that on hot days, off the line there is a slight loss in power from sucking in all the hot air from under the hood that the FIPK heat shield helps to block. But, once you get moving, at least with my ram air hood, the difference doesn't last long, and if anything helps get me off the line without spinning the tires easier. Doing some data logs with my digimoto software, once you get above 10mph, the intake air temp reading is only a few degrees higher than ambient. But I do have a ram air hood that lets in cool air directly towards the filter. I never did any logs with the FIPK.

I have a couple questions for people that have AEM intakes or the K&N X-stream filters.
How do you AEM owners like the intakes? They do come with some kind of heat shield, right? I ask because I swear I've seen some pics of the AEM ones and I saw no heat shield.
K&N X-stream users, what needs to be done with the vacuum line that runs into (near) the stock airhat? And if I remember correctly, it needs to be fastened to the throttle body in a different way, right? Is this the X-stream I'd want if I went that route? http://www.summitracing.com/parts/KNN-66-3040/
hskrRT
06-21-2009, 01:42 PM
When runniong the open element filter like I have with the x-stream lid, just put a breather on the valve ccover instead of having a hose to the airhat. It's an inlet for fresh air into the rank case so as long as you have a filter it's good.

It's good but not the best anymore. Nothing out there sounds as good but under certain circumstances I think my truck felt like a dog on the low end even though it pulled at 70 and above like never before. It lets in TONS more air than alot of the other intakes but without some tuning in alot of cases you won't make the best use of it.
If I do anything with my newtruck it will be a non-oiling filter in a sealed intake.

I have the AEM on mine. I bought it used from this board and it works really great. It was missing the head shield...just the AEM DryFlow filter, the 4" aluminum tube (with support brace) and the AEM air hat.
I really like the kit. I'm not a fan of oiled filters, so the dry synthetic filter really appealed to me. It's washable just like other filters, but it doesn't rely on a thin film of oil to filter the air; it's a real filter. And because it's a "real" filter, it doesn't have that honking "wooo" sound do it when you get up on it. I had a K&N filter on my truck before, when I was playing around with a home-made intake. It had a real honk to it when I stepped on it. The AEM isn't so. But it made a nice performance difference over both the stock air box and my home-made job.
Because my AEM didn't come with a heat shield, I may make one. For now, I removed all the rubber shrouding next to the radiator and I imagine that lets in a lot of air. The filter sits pretty close behind it, so it's right in the air flow when moving.
Summary: because I'm not a fan of oiled filters, I really like the AEM system. But of course, anyone can buy an AEM DryFlow filter and put it on their own intake.

Im really surprised not many others have made an intake out of PCV pipe like I did? It withstands heat better than the ebay metal ones, and is cheap and easy to make yourself. The most expensive part is a nice K&N cone filter on the end. I will take a pic of mine in the daylight tomorrow. I still need to make a heat sheild between the filter and the engine, and I really should have crammed the filter a little further into the fender. Just wouldnt be able to pull it off to clean very easily if it was too far in there.

14inch round, 2.5inch tall, K&N filter. The offset base and cover are Mr Gasket Co.
Sounds very purrty.

Two questions:
I can use one of those cool old fashioned open element setups on my 4.7L Durango?
And if so, is there any benefit or loss on doing that over a standard CAI?

Current one-off setup but only temporary..

Pros: Allows me to run a true 5" diameter intake tract to utilize the full opening of the F&B 58mm TB and/or just a 5" flange opening filter like this one..

Cons: As-is it does breath in some underhood heat but like said its only temporary.

I have a 10in holly base plate/cap and a K&N 10x2.5 filter. Pretty nice setup, little bit more getupngo. cost me 75 bucks from summit!

14x2 summit gauze filter/base and top combo. $40 and works great on my otherwise stock 318... atleast sofar since it's freakin cold out. Cuts warm up time in half.

Im really surprised not many others have made an intake out of PCV pipe like I did?
I would take that off ASAP. PCV pipe releases a gas thats bad for your engine when heated up by underhood temps, which is exactly why you don't see anyone else running it.
I got a K&N filter on an ebay chromeintakes kit. I would like to see a dyno comparing mine to the acctual K&N kit that costs well over twice as much, as I'm thinking you gain maybe 1hp MAX over my kit. An intake is an intake.

That would all depend on the level of mods done to the truck doing the dyno testing. Maybe on an otherwise stock motor, but a more modified motor will show a bigger difference. The stock airhat design isn't very efficient, which is why the K&N tube/airhat are shaped the way they are. Not saying the K&N FIPK is the best available, or worth the premium they want for them, but it is a tried and true unit that is better than any ebay special that requires the use of the stock airhat.

Mine doesn't use the stock airhat as I know that is the worst part of the factory intake. It's all 3" tubing from the TB to the filter. I know the K&N is a good unit, but what they charge for a plastic tube is retarded. The filter is what ~$60, then they want almost another $200 for a plastic tube and little heat shield, I can't believe they sell them for that much.

a second that.. and the thought that it holds up to heat better is wrong, pvc piping will eventually crack due to the change in heat.. yes it can withstand hot water easily, but have you ever seen 1000 degree hot water running thru them.. i don't think so, that's why most company use a ceramic coated intake tubing (well the good ones like airraid and K&N) anyways take that off asap.
i've seen (and done) some ghetto installs before but i've never use pvc, unlesss it was simply to get the angles correct and then go bend some pipe to fit..
oh and i'm running a full on custom setup, it's not finished yet so sorry.. no teasers. but i cut my hood up and i'm running a 6" "open-top" cone reusable filter and a RAI style hood design, it still need one final peice and a good paint before it's ready for debut.

UNI filter. Has zero restriction (according to other racers using it). Eventually I want to seal it to the hood so it will only get fresh air from the cowl.
