Where can I purchase Amsoil at a Retail Store?
I get this question a lot, so I have created this thread to answer the question.
AMSOIL IS AVAILABLE IN SOME STORES
Amsoil is available in some stores -- mostly high performance speciality shops -- that lean more towards quality (for building performance and race engines, or a store owner that appreciates superior products) than to a "price point" retail store (i.e. Walmart, etc.).

IN THE BEGINNING ...
Amsoil was incorporated 34 years ago (1972) and did not have a sufficient budget to sell national on every level. Amsoil, being a small speciality oil manufacturer, could never compete with the big guys for shelf space.
Shelf space at the big stores is not free --- you have to pay for every inch of shelf frontage that you use, so Amsoil chose what worked for them at the time - a Direct Marketing System using Independent Amsoil Dealers.
If Amsoil was entering the market today they would probably pick a different course. Access to Venture Capital and the Stock Markets would give them access to the capital they would need for a different corporate structure.
__________
AMSOIL WILL NOT COMPETE WITH IT's INDEPENDENT AMSOIL DEALERS
The reason Amsoil is not on-the-shelf in more retail locations, is that they will not sell to retail stores for less than they sell to their Independent Dealers. For this reason, many retail stores are not interested in carrying Amsoil. They prefer to carry products with a higher mark-up (profit margin).

Adam,

Amsoil Product Recommendations
... (I will list the product recommendations after this information) ...
__________
How often does Amsoil need to be changed?
I am assuming you are asking about motor oil. Amsoil comments regarding Extended Drains (in my words):
Amsoil has been in the oil industry for 34 years. Due to Amsoil's superior synthetic composition and advanced performance additives, AMSOIL performs much longer than do conventional petroleum and other synthetic motor oils. No other major oil manufacturer matches AMSOIL's 25,000-mile or one-year drain interval recommendations (whichever comes FIRST).
However, the 25,000 mile /1 year that is on the back of the bottle is NOT an absolute! One must realize that is for non-severe service (highway miles where you have stable operating conditions). High-speed freeway driving is easy on the oil due to its excellent thermal stability. Also, if an engine is worn and if considerable stop-and-go driving is involved, shorter drain intervals are suggested. A good rule of thumb to follow is to change the oil at least once a year regardless the mileage.
For most vehicles AMSOIL recommends 2 to 3 times the OEM's recommendation
Under a combination of city and highway circumstances, AMSOIL recommends up to 2 or 3 times longer, it means up to 2 or 3 times the equipment manufacturer's recommendation (If your owners manual states 3k miles , then you can change at 9k, and if your owners manual states 5k then 12-15k mile oil changes would be alright based on driving habits ... the harder you drive, the sooner the change). Proper filtration is also very important, and the extended oil drain intervals are in combination with Amsoil Oil Filters.
Notice: Modifications to engine will change service intervals.
Notice: More frequent service may be required under severe service operating conditions.
Notice: For drain interval beyond 3x manufacturers recommendations (especially the 25k change) ---
--- oil analysis is recommended for establishing drain intervals.
AMSOIL --- 34 years of manufacturing oil and mountains of data and tests make these clains possible.
