Alright, first off i'm not very mechanically saavy and really am only getting started in the area of adding performance to my truck, however i have a friend who DOES know what he is doing, and i have been researching this topic for quite a while.

After looking around on forums and scouring the internet for information, I have come to find out some things about engine swapping for the 3.9L v6 engine in the Dakota. What i have read is that the 318 5.2L V8 is relatively easy to swap out with the 3.9L but does prove to have some issues regarding flooring at and pushing its limits. What i have also heard is that the 98 Dakota engine bay is capable of holding the 360 5.9L R/T engine (or so i've read) but have not really gotten any information as to how difficult and/or what parts, accessories, etc. are needed. All in all i'm just asking for all of those who have done this sort of thing, what i'm looking at in terms of what parts i'll need (detailed info would be nice), prices, time to install and things of that nature. And i'm well aware of the fact that it would probably be alot wiser to go out and but a new truck and/or vehicle rather than spending so much money on the one i already have, but i truly do like my truck and would prefer to spend the extra cash to make it badass.

Another question i would like to ask is would it be possible to use a Mopar 360 crate engine or would i need special mounting brackets and things of that sort to make it work (as well as other thing)?

Anyways any and all help would be appreciated and thanks in advance.

Also, if possible, is there any work i can do prior to the engine swap and what would that entail?

Don't take my word as the truth, just from what I know.

The Gen III dakota is 90% the same vehicle no matter what you got.

This means that the 5.9l can swap into an truck with the I4 with relative ease.

Just need the engine, tranny(auto, nv3500 can't really handle a 5.9l, from what i've read), ecm, wiring, etc etc. Theres gonna be a few things here and there, linkages.. that kinda stuff that are diffrent as well. And the mounts. I know there are some "engine swap" kits out there for swapping in a 5.2 or 5.9, but I wouldn't recommend it. I would suggest you purchase OEM mounts, install those, then the rest of the engine/tranny.

Once again, let me repeat, this is what i've gathered in my somewhat limited research. The information is only as good as the other people that I read, so please research yourself. Hopefully someone who knows will read this and correct it.
