Ok, just changed the oil and filter on my 01 dakota..Added 6qts of 5-30, as the books says, and ran it for about 5 minutes..Let it sit for 10 min and checked oil level, half a qt down..No, no leaks..Does it take longer to drain back from the heads or do these things really take 6 1/2 qts?..Thanks..

Yeh, they take 6 quarts and it does take longer than a few minutes for the oil to completely reach its way down to the oil pan. There is usually more than half a quart in nooks and crannies in the motor for awhile. Check it after maybe a couple of hours and you will see it measures just fine.

Thanks, I will check it again in the morning..I am use to my old ford truck that only takes a couple of minutes to drain back..

What he meant by this is the dipstick doesn't measure the quarter of a quart or so that is in the oil filter. If you've put six qts in when you changed the oil then you're fine. My dipstick has always read at the bottom of the normal range bordering on add even after the truck sitting over night. Don't overfill because this can hurt the motor just as much as underfilling it.
