I'm going with 4.10 gears & a Dana Trac-Lok for my 2005 Dakota Quad SLT V-8 Auto 2wd.
Changing from the 3.55 & open differential
Seeing if anyone else has done it and what their results were & if they were happy with it??

A lot of people have changed their gears and are very happy with the results, some say its the best mod. Do a search, there has been probably a dozen or so of this same topic brought up in past few months. I know your a newby but look around the site a little and the answers pop up and no waiting for people to respond.

Oh yeah I know.
I've been posting on Dodgeforum.com
I did a search a couple days ago and read thru tons and tons of stuff (on here, dakotausa.com & dodgeforum.com).
Most of the people that changed their gears were people with 4x4's though.
I was just seeing if anybody did it on their Gen IV......hence I posted it here...lol
GenIV does weigh more than the previous Generations....so I think that would make the impression a little different as well.

Did mileage get REALLY bad????
just curious
I changed gears from 3.55 Open diff to 4.10 LSD on my 2wd 5.9 Durango and it made things way better (.8 second decrease in time from stock in the 1/4). I have not noticed any significant fuel economy changes.

No, gas mileage usually increases. Going to 4.56's in my truck gave me better city, but less highway. Overall is actually a little up from before the swap.

That's what I was thinking.......better city mileage since the gears would be doing most of the work instead of the engine.
But obviously a little less mileage on the highway
Got the 4.10 Motive gears from a guy on ebay (new) for $188 SHIPPED and the Dana Trac-Lok LSD for $259 SHIPPED from www.4wheelparts.com
I saw Dana Trac-Loks for cheaper, but supposedly they were the old part number, and a new version just came out (what I ordered) with beefier clutches or something is what the guy at 4wheelparts told me

Well back from the dead.
Just wanted to add another :jawdrop: on the .8 drop!
I'm going from 3.55 to 3.90's on my 4X4 next week. I was hoping for a .2 drop at most. But .8...dang. I'm hoping for .4 .5 now. :biggthump

Go with 4.10's instead.
P.S. What engine do you have?

I got the 4.7. I was told I needed a different carrier to go with 4.10 so just go with 3.90. If this isn't true... :cussing: The gears are already here at the house, so I guess I'm too late here.
I'll be going to alittle shorter tire too soon (I know I know- but its a 4wd!) :sorry: But it just feels way too squishy with the factory 265/70R16's (31's?) I'm going to step back to the 245/70R16 (29's?) And hopefully open up a mpg or two, and help that final drive out alittle.

You won't need a new carrier. I want from 3.92 to 4.56 with the same carriers. Chris4x4 (who posted above) went from 3.55 to 4.10 without new carriers.

I think the main reason there was such a positive response to the 4.10s from 3.55s was because of the height of my tires. In reality, my 20s with a 29.8" tire were probably too tall for the 3.55s, but were the ideal height for the 4.10s.

I wonder if Randy's Ring & Gear would swap me gears. I should have asked on here first. Now I know!
