Well i was just getting ready to order a custom roll pan when my dad mentioned something about it being illegal to not have a bumper, so i went on the DOT site and sure enough its illegal to have a roll pan on your truck if u live in wisconsin. My ? is, Has anybody with a roll pan that lives in Wisconsin, ever had any problems with the cops, or is it just one of those laws that nobody enforces? Let me know, Thanks

That is absolutely retarded. Brand new trucks can be sold with no rear bumper whatsoever. What's the difference between a roll pan and no bumper at all?

IIRC, the Isuzu Hombre, the Chevy S-10, and the Mitsubishi Mighty Max had a sort of roll pan factory installed. I can clearly recall the S-10 Xtreme having a factory roll pan instead of a "real" bumper. Fullsize trucks roll right off the dealership's lot with no bumper at all...Farmers especially like to add those pintle hook bumpers, so they're delivered with no bumper at all, and it's perfectly legal.

I'd run it till you got yelled at, then use that info as ammo to fight it if you were to get a citation for it.

Nope, they came with a regular bumper just like the rest of the S-10's.

What's the difference between a roll pan and no bumper at all? ....my friend told me the other day that when you buy a new truck wit a rear bumper, you pay extra for the bumper, like its an option or something. Anyone ever heard of this?

Ive never heard of the bumper being optional but maybe on some of the foreign trucks they are. Id really love a roll pan, but i cant afford to buy 1, have it welded in and painted and then find out that i need to cut it out and put the bumper back on.

I agree that it's retarded, my dad bought a 95 s-10 brand new and it came with no rear bumper, no brackets, only a place to mount the license plate. Ended up putting a tube bumper on it and good thing too, got rear ended at 35 by a lumina. Front end of the car was toast and only had to fix a little bit on the bumper on the truck. If it were me I'd run the rollpan, I don't think any cop unless they're really really bored and desperate to write a ticket is going to pull you over for it.

Anyone ever heard of this? i just had a conversation with a an older coworker about that same topic. most of us thought it was a hoot  since we just figured a bumper was standard equipment. pass the salt boys, i guess i gotta eat some crow.

I agree, if it is illegal and you want to avoid a nasty fine. id jsut fab up a 3inch steel pipe bolted or welded to the rear frame. then cover it all up with the roll pan. This way if you do get pulled over. goto court with pictues of the roll pan on, then off. :biggthump

Well according to the Illinois State cop that pulled me over last week it is a federal law that your bumper has to stick out like an 1/8 inch from the rest of the body. I looked at the cop and said if they are not legal than why can they sell them without a notice saying for off road use only or something like that and he just kinda looked at me weird then he asked if there was any way that I could fix it and I said no because it is welded on and I am not about to cut it out. So he gave me a warning for it and let me go.

Also 5 or 6 of my buddy's trucks have had them for years and we all cruise together we have never heard of this law. Madison WI

I have gone 3 years without anything being said to me and I have been pulled over a lot. if the cop that pulled me over had given me a ticket I would have been an ass and explained to him that I wouldnt have even been on the highway if it wasnt for my grandmas funeral which was completely true. you know give him a guilt trip and make him feel like a ass...
