I know on my Ranger, I could cut into the airbox and drill holes into the box itself and it gave the truck a deeper growl and quicker response. Has anyone tried this on the 'kota?

I'm sure some one has done it. Most people get a K&N drop in and leave the air box alone or they buy or make a intake. Try cutting the holes and let us know how it goes.

if you check white bro's racing (a motorcycle distributor), they sell a product just for this. It's a filtered circle that you just pop into a hole. You use a 1" hole saw and then the little filter just pops into and locks in place. They are pretty cheap and the filters are washable. I think they come like 4 or 6 to a pack.

Actually, it was a mod that took 10 minutes and was free. I'm always trying to do mods that no one else can.

Anyone try this yet?

No Hp is gained by drilling holes into the air box, you destory the ram air effect

umm what ram air? its drawing air off the fender, so its not drawing any hot air from the engine bay.

Meh, on my mom's Bonneville, we just like 3 4" holes in the lower air box. Car seems to have ALOT more gettup n go, specially at the top end. Doesn't feel like it's sucking through a straw anymore.

I'm going to run a 4" line from my grill to the airbox in the new few days. :biggthump I'll keep ya posted

Umm....there's only one pic of your air box there and you can't see any hole cut out.

Remove the snorkel on the front of the airbox, remove the rubber flap in the back of the grille. Took a small section of heater duct (not the slinky expandable type but the fixed size version that can pivot at every joint) for about two dollars from lowe's. Put a couple screws to hold it in the airbox opening and the inlet to the duct is right up near the grille. I'm using the paper filter and from feel alone it's an improvement.

I did the same basic thing. If it wasn't cold/clowdy I'd go snap a pic. I used a 4" exh elbo outa the airbox (cut out the stock 'snorkel') and then ran some 4" tubing to the grill (cut hole in flap) I might be crazy, but it seems to have helped :biggthump

I have used those small 1" round filters (Made by Uni - http://www.unifilter.com/online%20catalog/accessories.html Scroll down to "Filtered Air Vents") on a couple of YSR50 racebikes I built a few years ago. The foam inserts aren't secured very well to the plastic housing and can (WILL) be sucked out and right into your motor. If you use them, make sure you put a dab of silicone on the side of the foam to glue it in place.

I highly doubt doing this will help performance any. It will change the sound of your intake though. If that's all you care about then get one of those dual filter HAI (Hot Air Intake) monstrosities.

im just throwing ideas out there as a a somewhat new memeber to the dak scene, what about putting the heater duct to connect to the holes in the bumber where the fog lights are?
like for a ram effect and it would be out of the way of the heat of the engine.

I think GSM has (or had?) a similar intake design for their Paxton superchargers that routed down to one of the foglight holes. It's been awhile since I've seen or heard anything about that. Bringing cool air in from there is an ok idea, but be careful of running through large puddles of water.

If you want a very clean "ram air" setup, check out Bill Haleen's website: http://www.dakbenimble.com/ and look at the pictures he's taken of his setup. If you pester him enough, he might actually tell you what he used to fab it up. :) He >was< going to make a kit for this, but that never happened.

Bottom line with whatever you come up with: Make sure the air really is >COOL< and flows at least as well as the stock setup. If you go with an open element type filter similar to the K&N FIPK, just make sure it's got a heatshield to keep the heat from the exhaust from being sucked in otherwise you're wasting your time. Also, don't be fooled... just because it's louder doesn't mean its better! :biggthump

on ebay they have thoes duel air intakes, what about making making enough room on the drives side to fab up tubing and make it like duel CAI?

Don't really think those dual intakes are worth anything in performance. I doubt having two tubes drawing in air compared to a single tube is going to make a difference on a stock motor as the engine will take in only as much as it needs anyways. I'll take a pic of my heater duct attachment tommorow after I get back from work if I can do so before it gets dark. I wish oem the routing went right to the outside air...in fact, popped the hood on my dad's clk55 and the stock air inlets are actually scoops that run from the front grill back to two separate filters and on into the motor. Pretty neat, oem cold air...wish we had that...oh wait now I do! :jester:

Finally took some pics today. the duct is held on by two very small screws. Just drilled two pilot holes into the airbox where the snorkel would mount on. The duct itself fits nicely inside the opening and routes right up to the front, just remove that rubber flap that goes there. Also painted the duct with high temp flat black paint. Drove in the rain and no issues, but then again, we don't get much rain over here.

Did you notice much ,any improvement with that set up that is about what I was thinking of doing?

Throttle response is improved, and the good thing is the air coming in is now alot cooler as it's mostly all coming in from the outside. (before i had the opening and no duct so it was a mix of outside air plus the hot air from the engine). For the couple dollars I spent on it, it's well worth it. Not sure but I might eventually put a K&N panel filter to replace the paper...it lets more dirt in but I don't drive my truck more than once or twice a week anyways (gas prices + traffic = me on my motorcycle everyday for the commute) so I'm less concerned about that factor now.

Funny thing is I took off the rubber flap and zip tied it along the side of the airbox to the radiator to seal of the hot air from the engine. Free mod! I did it 2 days after I got my truck. It actually looks like it should be there! If you didn't know anything about the looks of the engine compartment you'd never be able to tell.

My mom walks outside and says what the $%&@ are you doing to your new truck? I said fixin it! She asks me if I think I'm smarter than some engineer that gets paid thousands of dollars to make this stuff.

One word answer. YEP :biggthump
