:p Yesterday I decided to call the dealer and I told them that I put bigger tires 18" on my truck and now the truck cuts off at 84-85 mph insted of 96 and he said sorry, but talked to another tech and he said that there are 3 settings on the computer for the different size wheels that come on the dakotas. so they could do that for me. boy I sure hope so as soon as I can. its that or the 350.00 ase chip.

Hey Sic what rims and tire combination did you go with? Got any pics?

Hey SSrage, I've got 225 40 18" tires. I don't know how to post pics, but you could go to www.severedties.com under chapters and pick nevada. another site is www.truckrun.net go to old shows pick forbbiden fantasy then go to the 3rd page.

Damn Sic! Thats tight!! But the real question is: Can you get it any lower? I'm not a fan of lowriders but yours takes the cake. Thats awesome man. Who did all the metal work and the shaving? Whoever it is from what I can tell is great. Raisin the floor of the bed was a great touch... course you had too with that style of drop but its still slick as hell. Or Jst2Sic in other words! :D

I did not know that the 4.7 had a 96 cut off. I have a durango, is that the same on that?? I put 20's with 245 40's on it. What is a ASE chip??

Thats kinda odd, I have 20s on my 02 Durango with the 4.7 with 275/45 tires on it, and ive had it to 105 mph without it cutting out.
No tire size mod had been done at that time. So go figure.

Ya I could not remember wether I have had above 85 or not. I don't thing so. I am fixing to order, the HO cams, hughes engines HO intake, and a throttle body, not sure which one yet. then later on when I can afford it I would like to get a supercharger for it.

I know mine pegged just shy of the 100mph mark. Had a nice 2 lane road with wheat fields all around comin back from kansas one weekend.

Cuts out? Really? Man, I could have sworn I've had mine up around the 105 range a few times and never noticed any cutting out. I'll give it a try again this weekend. :D

Well, I got it up over 100, but ran out of road. There was no "cut-out".

Ummmm... I wouldn't say mine cut out at 98mph... it more like just died at 98mph. Then came back to life when the speed dropped below 95. It literally just nosed over and quit.

is the cut off at 98 maybee a two wheel drive thing? I have a 2002 4x4 with 4.7 5spd auto and I have been over 100 a few times once hitting almost 115 but backed off to prevent losing my tires or causing a big wreck.

my bro and i have almost identical trucks. his is auto mine is stick. both 2x4. his shuts down at 98 mph. mine shuts down at 114 mph. i heard it's due to his having a aluminum drive shaft and mine being made from steel. the alum. can't take the revs the steel one can. not balanced good enough or something like that

All I know is that the 4.7L with auto's are supposed to cut off at 98mph and the sticks around 115mph. I don't know why its this way but I read it in Truck Trend I think.

Yeppers.. and it sucks LARGE! first time I've heard the driveshaft explanation though.. makes a little sense.. more so than tire speed ratings.. which is false.

The ASE chip won't move the limit. A PCM flash such as the B&G, Leach or Kenne Bell are the only things at the moment that will alter it, to my understanding.

This is unfortuante for those of us that do some mods.. such as TB, CAI, HO intake, true duals, cams.. and decide to take a run at the track.. there is a pretty good chance we will hit the limiter before the end of the 1/4 mile. I'm not a racer.. but after my mods are done.. I do want to run it just out of curiousity sake. (and possible bragging rights :D )

Hey Sic, again nice truck! Do you plan on painting your front lower valence? For some reason it just looks out of place too me. I plan on painting mine sometime in the near future when I get a roll pan for the back. gonna leave the grill chrome and the top of the front bumper.

No Rage I plan on keeping the valance chome. I'm tired of rock chips in my paint.

Aight cool. Makes sense now that I think about it. As low as yours is I guess thats quite a bit more of a problem than mine being basically stock hieght. Wanna do the hotchkis some time in the near future but been too broke lately.

i have a 2003 4.7 with the new trans in it from mer-sadies (cant spell it) but i have had mines to the 120 mark going to the beach on video. past the 115 limit but i also had my truck build from the factory with my certian needs 4.7 with 355 the new 5 speed auto from mersadies. maybe its just something with pre 2003 dakotas i know my friend who has a blue rt and his shuts off at somthing low also. i read somewhere that the new 2003s go to 123 mph till shutoff. and superchip is comming out with a programer this summer before july . it will help us change the mph and speedo and shift points.

It has not happened to me yet but why does it cut-out and what do you have to do to make not cut-out?

evilr2003
06-07-2004, 09:06 PM
theres a thing called a vss sensor that goings to your trans. you need to splice a switch into it a on/off sitch like a nos one. when you get up to the point your vss sensor will tell the computer to shut off. killing the engine so no go. when you hit the switch it gets rid of the imput the sensor is sending to the computer to shut off the truck. if racing just hit the switch but you cant have it off all the time it will mess up your shift points durring long times It works for camaros also thats where i got the idea from my 92. its not like you need to have the limiter off all the time anyways most people dont drive around doing 123 + mph lol

sounds like that will work for a auto trans. what about a stick? i heard that if you pull the abs fuse it disables the speed limiter. i never tried that one tho. and there's the one about turning the key to the start position. i'm not gonna try that one.

evilr2003
06-09-2004, 12:24 AM
yeah i heard about that with the dakota turing the key all the way. i think that would be bad . an auto trans is the only thing i have tried the cutting of the vss on sorry ,

ok. i'm going to northern wis. at the end of the month. i'll try pulling the abs fuse then. lots of back roads to try it out on. i'll let you know what happens.

This is my Speedo at 100... I've made it to 115, with me 3.9 sooo I don't think there is a "cut-off" it's just that it accelerates at a slower rate past 95.

Nice pic I have allways wanted to get a pic of the Mustang speedo at 140mph, but I would like to keep my DL so I don't know if that will happen.

I have an 02 QC SLT, and the engine doesn't die, but at 96 - 98 the timing retards severely, with the complete lack of power that goes with that. Once it gets to 95, all is well again. I ordered a superchip PCM to get by that, but now I'm concerened about the drive shaft. Is that solid info, that it won't take more speed than that?

I have a 2k1 QC auto, and I was reading this thread a while back, finally got a chance to see what was up this weekend, I had mine to 110 before the upcoming curves made me slow back down, no loss of power, no probles at all.

I wired a switch inline with the ABS fuse so when I flip the switch from inside the cab it is like pulling the ABS fuse. When you pull the ABS fuse, or in my case just flip the switch, the speedo dies and goes to 0 mph the brake light comes on and so does the abs light. You can't drive around like that though because it will eventually trip the MIL. But if I'm in WOT mod and want to exceed the speedlimiter I just flip the switch, and when I let off the gas I flip the switch back and the speedo goes back to working and the idiot lights go off.

Hope this helps somebody...
