Have a 99 dakota, 3.9L with 82,300 miles on it. Whenever I'm coasting in 4th or 5th gear and give it some gas I hear the engine knocking, my guess is it's the lifters. And it's starting to knock more through the lower gears, but it doesn't knock at all when I have it in neutral. Anyone have an idea of what the knocking noise is and if it is the lifters, how do I get it to stop?

Timing chain?? It's also starting to make the knocking noise just a little more through the low RPM range in 5th gear.

Try the timing chain tensioner. Mines was making a lifter type noise too but I read in some forums that the tensioner goes out more often then not. I replaced it and had no more noises.

my trucks been doing something like that too. only when im moving it makes the noise, gets louder as the rpms go up. it sounds like its coming from the drivers side to me even though my truck has only 36,000 miles on it i think i might have a bad lifter too.
