Hey guys,
I recently bought a 2000 Durango SLT 5.9L. LOVE IT!! I've wanted one for years and finally got one!
..any way, I recently bought an aftermarket air intake kit off of ebay. It is 'chrome intake' brand (couldn't afford the K&N right now).
My question is, after buying it, a mechanic that I know from a Lexus dealership said that it may make my 'check engine' light come on because he's seen that happen to a lot of the Lexus' that people put these kits on. He said that in the K&N filters, for example, the oils in the filter get into the engine and make the check engine light come on.
I also have a '90 Dodge Stealth and I have one on there, but he said that because of all the extra computers in the Durango since it is a lot newer, this may happen and it may eventually mess things up.
I know that Durangos and Lexuss are a lot different, so before I installed it, I just wanted to know if anything like this has ever happened to anyone with an intake kit and open filter on their Durango? ...or if anything at all could happen over time to the engine? Maybe it is just something that happens to Lexus's but won't happen to my Durango.
Please let me know what you all think about this! ...If you have the time, please email me with a response to this as well at gregorylschantz@yahoo.com. I'd like to install the intake this weekend, but want to make sure nothing will go wrong first.
Thanks guys!

If someone is oiling their K&N FIPKs enough to get the oil into the engine...they should be shot...ur intake u just bought off ebay shouldnt be oiled, if it is, its only going to help. Nothing is going to go wrong, and no check engine light should come on after u installed it. Theres plenty of people on here that have Ebay Intakes and none of em have complained about it.

Your going to trust an import guy? He probably told you that a NOS sticker adds HP too right? He's wrong, and he ^^^ is right.
Your fine, nothing is going to happen and your CEL isnt going to come on. You would have to have an obscene amount of oil on an air filter for it to get sucked into the engine and cause any problems.
I used to be fairly nice to mechanics...but I'm fed up with their seemingly endless BS and now I walk into all auto shops with a permanant "STFU, your a moron" look on my face, they seem to understand it very well.

so true so true....i worked for a couple dealerships as a lot attendant and you learn quickly that some mechs are assholes, know it alls, ripoff artists,......but there also a decent of good guys that are willing to talk to you like a equal.....
but you gotta remember that these guys deal wit alot more jerkoffs, know nothings, old people,so n so....so it is rare that they work on a person's car that has some brains..
there are alot of people that can not change a tire...just hope none on this site..and if so go learn!!!

You'll be fine. Your CE light won't come on due to an aftermarket air intake.

You'll be fine since you don't have a Mass AirFlow Meter. It's not BS. my buddies Trans Am ran like shit for a while, cause? Oil droplet from K&N deposited themselves onto the VERY small sensors on the MAF. It's not BS, it's just not a problem on speed density systems like dakota's have.
Also, most people make their damned K&N bleeding red with about 10X the oil they need. It's a valid thing. I Promise! :biggthump

:help: It probably won't come oiled but I would certainly recommend going out and buying a K&N Service Kit to do it. It's a good insurance policy considering some of the filters that come with them and the inherent design of these types of filters to be oiled. Just don't go overboard with the oil.

This reminds me of my trip to a mitsu dealer with my talon.
Car was running but just not performing the way I felt that it should. I took the car in for a diagnostics test to see what was up (this was before I had any idea what I was doing). After the asshole tech pounded the crap out of my car in the parking lot and up the street he comes back in and parks it. He proceeds to tell me my car is slow because it is an automatic. I told him he was a jackass and obviously has no expierience with a DSM. He gets cocky and tells me my intake set up (open filter ) was the problem :jester: He said the only intake you should put on a car was like the one on his honda that locates the filter inside the wheel well. I then told him that they dont even make one that you can buy for a dsm that does such a thing. He starts laughing and calls another tech over and they start making fun of me. I get pissed off and leave.
I went home and got my new blow off valve in the mail and put it on, it turned out that the stock one was leaking boost off and that was the problem. So much for his theory LMAO
The best part to this was the fact that the jackass left his brand new cell phone on my car seat :biggthump I proceed to throw it under the car and run it over in the parking lot LMAO :owned:
